Blog writing is a very common topic on the internet. Many people have done well financially by starting a blog for themselves, their company, or a product they sell. So what does it take to do well at blog writing? What does it take to keep people reading your blog posts? In a world with leaders blogging about leadership and other topics on a regular basis, how do you keep your blog relevant? I have seen three suggestions to keep your blog relevant and help you to be successful at blog writing.
Blog writing for your audience
First, write great content!
The first key to successful blog writing is to produce great content. Ask yourself the questions, “Of all the blogs out there, why does my blog stand out? What is my niche? How do I keep people coming back to read more?” By asking these questions you will be able to define your target niche and target audience. From there, your blog writing can be directed towards that specific audience so your content is very relevant to their needs. Your content is king in getting people to come to your blog regularly. When blog writing, it is important that you understand the topics you write about.
If you don’t have good content, people won’t even start reading your material. As part of having good content, it should also be written well. Be sure to proof read everything before you post it. Little mistakes in grammar and spelling will be overlooked by most readers if they occur infrequently, but if your posts have many mistakes they will turn away readers even if you have great information.
Second, keep your posts short and sweet!
When you are blog writing, the intention is not to write an extensive report for each blog. Blog posts are meant to provide valuable bits of information in relatively short articles. I read blog posts regularly and if a post is long and turns into a rant, I stop reading it. People are very busy don’t have time to read a new lengthy blog everyday unless it has high quality content. I have heard many recommendations that you should keep each blog post to 300 – 800 words and I totally agree. You can go over 800 words from time to time, but if you do, the content must be great to keep the reader’s attention.
Third, post regularly!
Blog writing is similar to writing for any other publication in that new material should come out regularly. If you follow the first two points, you will gain a following because people will like your blog writing material if you post regularly. Once you start blog writing, regular posts will keep you audience coming back. You can pick whatever frequency works best for you and stick to it. You shouldn’t post so much that you sacrifice good content, but you shouldn’t post so infrequently that people forget about you. There needs to be a balance between frequency and quality.
As you begin blog writing, you will find the style that best fits your audience and writing style. What recommendations do you have to keep an audience following you on your blog?
