Hello and welcome to the Leadership Done Right Podcast, Episode 2 – Why You Should Create a Vision!
One of my favorite statements about why you should create a vision is found in Proverbs 29:18. It says, “Where there is no vision, the people perish.” In episode #1 I explained that one of a leaders most important responsibilities is to create a vision for those they lead.
Today, I am going to discuss three important points on why it is important to create a vision and a vision statement.
First, how do you create a vision?
The website Business News Daily explains that, “Vision statements are aspirational; they lay out the most important primary goals for a company. Unlike business plans, vision statements generally don’t outline a plan to achieve those goals. But by outlining the key objectives for a company, they enable the company’s employees to develop business strategies to achieve the stated goals. With a single unifying vision statement, employees are all on the same page and can be more productive.”
- Vision statement = short and to the point, easy to follow
- Feeding America: A hunger-free America (4 words)
- Human Rights Campaign: Equality for everyone (3)
- National Multiple Sclerosis Society: A World Free of MS (5)
- Alzheimer’s Association: Our vision is a world without Alzheimer’s (7)
- Habitat for Humanity: A world where everyone has a decent place to live. (10)
Second, who should you create a vision for?
1. Create a vision for yourself and your success.
There is a saying that, “If you imagine something, you will begin to think about how to make it happen. And if you think about how to make it happen, you will figure out what to do to make it happen. Then if you think about what to do to make it happen long enough, you will eventually do it.”
2. Create a vision for those you lead and their success.
Worked for someone that had complete confidence in you and your future. Instill confidence.
3. Create a vision for your organization based on your contribution.
Look at where your organization is now and where you want it to be. Even if you are not be the top dog in your organization, you can still create a vision and influence the direction of the organization.
Third, what should you do once you create a vision?
- Share it
- Post it somewhere that you can see it daily
- Talk about it
- Live it.
