What Would You Do As A New CEO? – 9/10/2012
Over the last few months, I’ve followed Yahoo’s CEO situation. In January, Yahoo hired Scott Thompson. While he was the CEO, he made major spending cuts and laid of many people as an attempt to bring the company back from financial woes. His approach demotivated the company and created tension between him and the employees. It didn’t take long for his approach to get noticed by the board of directors. In May, Scott was terminated as the CEO as a result of his leadership style and some integrity issues that were brought to light. More…
Do You Have A Growth Plan In Place? – 9/13/2012
I took a flight from Reno, NV to Poenix, AZ in 2009 where I had the opportunity to sit next to a very smart guy. I don’t remember his name, so I will just call him Brett. Brett had a background in economics and was in the economics doctorate program at the University of Nevada – Reno. As we talked, he brought up a very interesting question. He said, “So every new business owner is always concerned about what they should do to avoid failure. They are so concerned that their product remains relevant that they never ask themselves, ‘What will we do if everything goes really well? How will we keep up with the demand if it is very high?’” From there, we began talking about a variety of things that leaders can do to prepare for growth, so that they don’t fail due to the inability to grow. Overall, the factors we talked about all dealt with having a growth plan in place. More…
Are You In Control Of Your Life? – 9/17/2012
I have a friend that is a chronic complainer. He has been blessed with many material possessions compared to most, but every chance he gets he complains about someone or something. “That person isn’t nice enough.” “I am underprivileged because I don’t have the nicest new thing.” “It’s not fair that I got this and everyone else got that, especially with the amount of work I put in. It’s not fair!” “It’s not my fault that this is happening to me, it is the boss’s fault.” “I would be more successful if that person didn’t put that road block in my way.” The list of his comments and negativity goes on and on. He never takes any of the blame for his situation because it is always the fault of something or someone else. He is not in control of his life because he has given his control to others. More…
Take The Initiative And Be Successful – 9/18/2012
Have you ever been in a group of people where something needed to be done, but everyone was waiting for someone else to make the first move? Everyone in the group seems shy, doesn’t want to stand out, feels intimidated, doesn’t have the desire to make the first move, or has some other thing that keeps them from making a move. Ultimately, however, there is an extreme lack of initiative amongst the group. In situations like this, I have seen something very interesting happen. Because nothing happens, there is almost always one person that decides to do what is uncomfortable. They take the initiative and get up to start working. From there, many others follow suit and they too begin to work. The person with the initiative usually ends up being the leader because they were the first person to act. More…

One challenge many leaders face is gaining the respect of those they lead. This can be a challenge for leaders at all stages of their career whether they are brand new or seasoned leaders. Respect is fundamental to being a good leader because it allows you to have influence. When leaders cannot gain respect, it is very difficult for them to get people to do things. Advance Your Qualifications To Become A Better Leader – 10/2/2012
Within many industries there are different certifications, licenses or other qualifications that give you the right to practice or work within that profession. For most, if not all, of those qualifications there are exams that you must take. The exams are very difficult because they cover all materials within that specific discipline. In order to pass the exams, most people are required to study long hours to gain a full understanding of the material. Some of the disciplines that have these types of exams are engineering (Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam and Professional Engineering (PE) Exam), accounting (Certified Public Account (CPA) Exam), and finance (Certified Financial Adviser (CFA) Exam). There are, however, many areas within these disciplines that people can work without passing the exam and getting the certification. More…
