Several years ago when I was a young leader, I had a great leader that taught me many valuable lessons that stuck with me. He was very experienced and successful. One of the most important lessons he taught me was how to effectively lead by example.
Three Techniques to Lead By Example
He explained three steps to effective lead by example that every good leader should follow.
1. Teach followers what to do.
The first step of leading by example is teaching your followers what you expect of them and what they should do. Teach them how to do their jobs effectively. Teach them successful leadership principles and how to be good leaders.
This teaching is usually done through sit down meetings, phone calls, group discussions, and other forms of verbal explanations. This teaching can also be done in a classroom setting. What’s most important is that you teach your followers what to how to do their jobs and be good leaders.
2. Show followers what to do.
Once you have taught your followers what to do, the second step is to show them what to do. Set the example for them to follow. Actively show your followers how to be successful. Show them how to use the leadership principles you’ve taught them.
When your followers see you set the example, they will develop trust in you and your leadership capabilities. They will also see that the principles you taught as effective and successful. Your example proves to your followers that they can effectively live the principles you taught. That confirms that the principles really are effective.
3. Actively help followers to do.
Once you have taught your followers vocally what to do and shown them how to do it through your actions, the final step is to actively guide and assist them as they do it. Help them live and follow the principles you’ve taught.
You can do this by observing them as they do their jobs, then sitting with them to give positive and constructive feedback. Your feedback will help them improve and become better. As you give feedback, explain steps they can take to change and be more effective.
Be sure that when you give this feedback it is done with love and genuine concern for them and their improvement. If they sense a spirit of judgement or arrogance, they will close off and your efforts will be in vain.

These three steps to lead by example changed the way I approach leadership. They helped me become a better leader. Now, I encourage you to put these three steps to the test. See if they too can change the way you lead and the way others respect and follow you as their leader.
