Hi friends! In this week’s episode, I am going to share five tips for new leaders. These tips will help you start off on the right foot so you can gain the respect of those you lead. Before we get to that, I want to share some quick tips for the week.

Tip of the Week

Every year around this time, I start thinking about education. My kids are going back to school and I can feel fall coming on. I love the feeling and I love thinking about education. I also love thinking about and setting new goals. With those two thoughts in mind, I set goals for education for the upcoming school year. 

If you have not completed all of your educational goals, now is the best time ever to start those goals back up. Look into opportunities to progress your education. There’s many ways you can do that. I have other posts and podcast episodes that focus more specifically on education, so I won’t go into much more detail now. Here’s just a few ways you can advance your educational goals. Go to school, get into a certification program, take an online course, or look into other programs to advance your education.

5 Pieces of Advice for New Leaders

New leaders go through a wide range of emotions. There’s excitement about the new opportunities, anxiety about making a mark, and confidence in the skills that brought them to where they are. With all this excitement, they also often lack knowledge and experience. There’s nothing wrong with that. The way to overcome those feelings is to seek advice. Along those lines, I was recently asked, “What is your advice for new leaders?”

Top 5 Challenges New Leaders Face in the Corporate World

Alright, so let’s talk about challenges new leaders face in the corporate world. Before we get into the five challenges, I want to explain how I arrived at these five challenges. I got these challenges from the feedback I have received from listeners like you, a variety of searches on Google and from my own leadership experiences. As I put the list together, I found there were many points and angles but the majority fell into these five categories.

1. The Expectation to Know and Be Everything

The first big challenge new leaders face is the internal expectation to know and be everything. I say internal because it often isn’t an expectation set by others, but rather an expectation that we have for ourselves. That got me thinking about where that expectation comes from… I think we add that pressure on our selves because we want to prove ourselves, make our mark, and be the leader we always wished we had. We also give ourselves that expectation because we expect to be better than our previous leaders. We forget, however, that it took time for them to get to where they are. So, what does leading your business with integrity mean today? Here are a few ways to be the boss without compromising your morals.

First, you’ve got to know what you stand for.
It’s impossible to expect something from other people you don’t even know to expect from yourself. Spend some time identifying the qualities you respect in other leaders and just in people in general. Odds are, things like honesty, dependability, and trustworthiness all stick out. At some point or another, every leader has probably had the challenge of getting people to work hard.  This can be very challenging because each person has their own agenda.  As leaders, the goal is to get everyone to work hard as a team.  The following four steps can be used to get everyone to work hard and be on the same page before a project begins.

Keep Calm And Work Hard

Build Trust

It is very difficult to get anyone to do anything for you if they don’t trust you.  Before you can get anyone to work hard, you must build trust with them.  One of the quickest ways to build trust is to help them know that you sincerely care about them and their success.  You must show and have a genuine desire to help them succeed.  If you don’t have this desire on your own, know that if they succeed, it will make you look good as the leader.  Work hard to overcome your pride and selfish desires to develop trust with those you lead.  If you don’t overcome pride, it will lead to problems accomplishing the established goals.
