Hi friends! For you that are regular listeners of this podcast, you probably noticed that I didn’t have an episode last week. That was because I spent the last week and a half repairing, reflooring, and repainting my house.

Home Makeover

I want to share a story about that and how it relates to change through transformation. My wife and I bought that house as newly weds and we really loved it! We lived in the house for four years until I was promoted and moved to a different state. At that time, the housing market was near the bottom so renting it out was the only option. 

Since that time, we’ve had two renters in it. The first renters were really good and took great care of it. The second renters were not good. They took decent care of it for the first two years. Hi friends! In this week’s episode, I am going to share five tips for new leaders. These tips will help you start off on the right foot so you can gain the respect of those you lead. Before we get to that, I want to share some quick tips for the week.

Tip of the Week

Every year around this time, I start thinking about education. My kids are going back to school and I can feel fall coming on. I love the feeling and I love thinking about education. I also love thinking about and setting new goals. With those two thoughts in mind, I set goals for education for the upcoming school year. 

If you have not completed all of your educational goals, now is the best time ever to start those goals back up. Look into opportunities to progress your education. There’s many ways you can do that. I have other posts and podcast episodes that focus more specifically on education, so I won’t go into much more detail now. Here’s just a few ways you can advance your educational goals. Go to school, get into a certification program, take an online course, or look into other programs to advance your education.

5 Pieces of Advice for New Leaders

New leaders go through a wide range of emotions. There’s excitement about the new opportunities, anxiety about making a mark, and confidence in the skills that brought them to where they are. With all this excitement, they also often lack knowledge and experience. There’s nothing wrong with that. The way to overcome those feelings is to seek advice. Along those lines, I was recently asked, “What is your advice for new leaders?”

10 Reasons Why Leaders Fail

Alright, now we’ll discuss the 10 Reasons Why Leaders Fail. I really like learning why others failed, so I don’t have to make the same mistakes myself. So let’s consider these 10 reasons with that mindset. Unlike last week, these are not in any particular order.

1. Poor Leadership Approach

Number one, leaders fail when they have a poor leadership approach. This can be manifest in many ways.

One way is that leaders sometimes use fear tactics. They try to coerce people through intimidation, manipulation, or overbearance. The whole point being to scare people into doing what they want.

Another poor leadership approach is to become a leader strictly to gain power over others. If you are leading just for power, you are probably not leading the right way.

And one final poor leadership approach is to lead with no confidence, rudeness, insincerity, or just flat out in a way that you show everyone you don’t know what you are doing. Our guest today is originally from Tucson, Arizona. As a young man he dabbled in filmmaking and graphic art. It wasn’t until later, in his career at Southwest Gas, that he saw Organizational Development as the route he wanted to pursue. He had already acquired a degree in Psychology and went on to accomplish a Masters of Science in Leadership. At that time with Southwest Gas he held a PHR (Professional in Human Resources) from the Society for Human Resource Management.

The Jump into Organizational Development

His first couple of years in OD was spent traveling around the country acquiring certifications. He received certifications to train everything from typological tools, such as Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, to Situational Leadership, Kepner-Tregoe and half a dozen Franklin Covey courses and more. Next week, he will be on to his 19th certification in Change Management with Prosci.

Early Retirement

Patrick took early retirement from Southwest Gas to accomplish life goals. He lived for a short while in the South of France and continues to explore various countries that fascinate him. After three years away, Southwest Gas called to enlist him as a consultant. He currently assists the Organizational Development Department and the Project Management Office. Podcast Episode #37 — Meaningful and Deep Relationships Lead to Success with Patrick GreenOur guest today is a self described “regular guy” who grew up in a broken home, and bounced back and forth between parents who both had financial difficulties. At the age of eleven his father, with whom he was living at the time, filed for bankruptcy, and the home in which they lived was lost to foreclosure. His experiences led to him writing the book “The Millionaire Journey: A Guide for Anyone to Reach Financial Freedom”.

Educational and Professional Background

Our guest went on to earn a bachelor’s degree and an MBA from Georgia State University. Since that time, he has held a variety of positions in management and administration in health care systems. Some of those positions have included Director of Business Operations, Chief Executive Officer, Executive Director of Heart and Vascular, and a Board Member. On the side he also provides medical consulting for MPACT Consulting.

He is passionate about helping people in leadership to be successful.
