When you are a leader, life is very busy. You attend meetings, seminars, work on special project teams, strategically plan for the future with your management team and/or are involved in other activities that keep you very busy.
When you are not doing one of those activities, your focus is on helping others solve their problems and learn to be leaders. This aspect of leadership is very demanding and requires your best effort because you focus on others and their needs. This can, however, be draining and take a lot out of you as a leader.
So how do you avoid getting drained?
I like to use Stephen R. Covey’s analogy in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People that everyone has their own emotional bank account. That bank account has a balance that is constantly fluctuating. When you give to others and help them with their needs, you are making withdrawals from that bank account. You are also making withdrawals when you stress and strain over things you are working on.
So how do you make deposits? There are multiple ways that deposits can be made, however, there is only one way that YOU can personally make deposits to that account. It is by making time everyday for yourself through personal development.
There are a number of activities you can do for personal development time. Here are some example activities you do for personal development.
Read Good Books
One of the best ways to do personal development is by studying from good books. You can learn about anything from books. There are good books on almost every subject known to man. There are books on leadership, economics, business, strategy, sports, airplanes, gardening, photography, history, etc. You can learn about whatever you want to learn about by opening a good book.
Some of my favorite books are personal development books. In most personal development books, you will find mistakes others made and what they learned to overcome them. You will also find steps others took to improve.
Set, Review, and Work Towards Goals
Setting, reviewing, and working towards goals is essential for personal development. When you desire personal development, you must first identify what the personal development will be and then you must set goals. Once the goals are set, you must review and work towards them.
Because goal setting is extremely important for personal development, I have written several posts on how to effectively set review and work towards completing important goals.
Create an Effective Morning Routine
Most of the really great leaders in the world have an effective morning routine. During that morning routine, they spend time focusing on the following:
By creating an effective morning routine, you set yourself up for a successful day. When you create one successful day at a time, you are well on your way to the successful life that you want.
