The Risks Of Promoting Without Giving Raises

By Brandon W. Jones on December 5, 2014 3

The Wall Street Journal article The Risks Of Promoting Without Giving Raises by Paul O. Lopez explained that there are many companies that want to promote their employees even though they are experiencing hard economic times.

The Risks Of Promoting Without Giving Raises - Article Review

2 Reasons Why to Promote Without a Raise?

The companies are promoting without raises for two reasons:

    1. They know the employees will take on the additional responsibilities to help the company
  1. The promotion will boost employee morale.

The companies, however, are unable to provide raises with the promotion. There is nothing illegal or inappropriate about doing this.

Factors to Consider When Promoting Without Giving Raises

Companies promoting without giving raises should consider past employees that have been promoted to similar positions and the types of raises they received. They must take particular caution when there are promotions that could be construed as racist or discriminatory. [Read more…] about The Risks Of Promoting Without Giving Raises

Surround Yourself With Great Leaders

By Brandon W. Jones on November 26, 2014 5

Have you been the leader over people you felt were extremely capable?  What effect did they have on you?  As the leader, it is in your best interest to surround yourself with great leaders.  If you do so, they will drive you to be better.  They will help you be your best self.  They will also ask you the questions others are afraid to ask.

Great Leaders at PepsiCo

The Wall Street Journal had an article that focused on Pepsi’s move to surround the CEO with outstanding leaders.  The article was titled, PepsiCo Positions Top Officials by Mike Esterl and Joann S. Lublin.  The article highlighted two big moves made by PepsiCo.  Pepsi is surrounding the Chairman and Chief Executive, Indra Nooyi, with two great leaders.  Pepsi brought in the former senior Wal-Mart Stores Inc. executive Brian Cornell as the head of one of Pepsi’s largest and most profitable units.  In addition, the longtime company executive John Compton was promoted to President of the company. Better Leadership Through Social Media

By Brandon W. Jones on November 23, 2014 3

As a leader, how do you feel about social media? Do you use social media? What do you see as advantages or disadvantages of social media?

I once heard the president of a large corporation say that social media is bad and that you should avoid it like the plague. He went on to say that nothing good will come from your involvement in social media. I felt like this viewpoint came from limited knowledge about social media and its benefits.

The Wall Street Journal article Better Leadership Through Social Media by Alexandra Samuel highlights six things leaders can do with social media to make life easier. They are:

1. Create a Leadership Dashboard – “Don’t just monitor the Web for intelligence about your business and brand; mine it for ideas, news and research that will help you develop as a leader.” [Read more…] about Better Leadership Through Social Media

Make Yourself More Marketable

By Brandon W. Jones on November 21, 2014 0

When you are in a position where your skills under utilized, it is important that you make yourself more marketable. If you are under utilized, it is because others don’t know how to fully utilize your talents. In this post, I will explain some steps you can take to make yourself more marketable.

Why You Should Make Yourself More Marketable

Before getting into how to make yourself more marketable, it is important to understand why it is important to be marketable. I read a very interesting article about leadership transitions that occur within organizations.  The article Firms Recruit Sitting CFOs by Maxwell Murphy and Vipal Monga explained some of the trends that happen in leadership during the spring.  [Read more…] about Make Yourself More Marketable

The Rules of Engagement

By Brandon W. Jones on November 18, 2014 0

The results were really interesting on the study of work environment shown in the Wall Street Journal article The Rules of Engagement by Sue Shellenbarger. The article stated that when employees are happy they are able to get more work done. Happy employees have a higher level of production. Although, the article explained that happier employees are more productive, it didn’t go into detail as to why they are more productive.

Social Health

The reason why happy employees are more productive is because they are less focused on themselves and more focused on the task at hand. Whether or not someone is happy is determined by an internal choice of each person. There are, however, many factors that can make the choice to be happy easier or harder. When many things are going for someone, they tend to be happier. On the other hand, when someone feels like the whole world is against him or her, they lose their desire to be happy. Companies cannot create happiness within employees; they can only do everything within their power to create an environment that facilitates happiness. People are most happy when they feel they are in control of their lives and things are going their way. People are also happy when they feel they are being trusted. Companies can create an atmosphere that promotes happiness by trusting the employees and allowing them to control their own schedule.

This approach of giving schedule flexibility does not work in every situation, however. In manual labor environments, many times the work is accomplished in teams where each person is responsible to accomplish a given task within a given time period. If a worker is not present, they cannot do their part and the work does not get done. Until everyone is at the work location, the maximum efficiency cannot be achieved. On the other hand, in an office where each employee works on their own to accomplish there given tasks, the employer can give much more schedule freedom to the employee.

The bottom line is that each employer needs to look at their specific work environment and decide how to best show trust in his or her employees. Once they can trust their employees, they can begin to give them more freedom. By giving them more freedom, they will promote the happiness of the employees. When the employees have a sustained level of happiness in their jobs, they will be more productive and help the success of the company as the article stated.

I Voted, Did You? – Choose Your New Leader

By Brandon W. Jones on November 2, 2014 0

I Voted, Did You? – Choose Your New Leader

Each November, residents in the United States have the opportunity to vote on whom they want as their political leaders. This is a great opportunity to choose a new leader or confirm that you still want the existing leader. Even though the Leadership Done Right audience is growing to the point that the international audience is similar in size to the audience in the United States, there are important points to address as they relate to elections, voting, and choosing your leaders.

I Voted, Did You? – Choose Your New Leader

It is not uncommon to hear people say around election time that they don’t want to vote because their vote doesn’t count or they are insignificant. This is a bad attitude to have because of the following reasons:

1. Each vote counts towards the sum of the votes for each new leader or issue.

No one candidate is elected just by one vote, but they are elected by many votes. Your vote may only be one vote, but if you don’t vote you are giving your freedom to other people. You are allowing them to choose on your behalf. [Read more…] about I Voted, Did You? – Choose Your New Leader
