Having A New Perspective On Leadership

A little while back I had the privilege of attending the seminar Leadercast put on by Chick-Fil-A and Giant Impact.  There were many good speakers throughout the day that inspired me to be a better leader.  As with any type of seminar, there were a few of the speakers that really seemed to hit home for me.  One of those speakers was Andy Stanley.  He is a sought-after leadership communicator, author, pastor, and the founder of North Point Ministries, Inc.  One quote that is highlighted in his biography is, “The goal of leadership is not to eradicate uncertainty, but rather to navigate it.”

Andy spoke about changing your perspective to have a new perspective on leadership.  By changing your perspective, you will change your life.  I had a lot of thoughts come to me as I listened.  Below is a compilation of what I heard him say and the thoughts I had as I listened.

When you are a leader, your leadership decisions impact those you lead and others. When you make a good decision, it has a positive effect on others. Additionally, when you make a bad decision, it can have major negative effects on others. Often your leadership decisions have a very long lasting impact on others.

Affordable Healthcare Act

In 2009, the U.S. passed the Affordable Care Act (Known as Obama Care). This Act was branded as a law that would make healthcare much more affordable for all Americans and provide additional healthcare benefits to more than 30,000 uninsured people. When the law was introduced there was a strong push to pass the law and do it very quickly. The law was over 1,000 pages and no one had time to read much of it. Because of the push to pass the law, many lawmakers went ahead and voted yes to the law without reading it or even knowing much of what it said.

Leadership Decisions Impact: Affordable Healthcare Act

Fast forward to today and the major parts of the law are starting to take effect. The Wall Street Journal had an article about the Affordable Health Care Act today called Wal-Mart to End Health Insurance for Some Part-Time Employees. In the article, it explained that “Wal-Mart Stores Inc. cutting health insurance for another 30,000 part-time workers and raising premiums for its other employees, as U.S. corporations push to contain costs in the wake of the federal health-care law.” [Read more…] about Understand the Impact of Leadership Decisions

Be Prepared For Your Moment

I am a big sports fan and follow most professional and college sports.  With the Fall upon us, it is not uncommon for college and professional football to be on TV at my house. I have my favorite teams in both college and the pros and I love watching them play whenever possible.

This week the college football rankings got turned upside down. For the first time in history, five of the top eight teams in the AP Top 25 poll lost in the same week. Two of the teams that pulled the upset were previously unranked and the other three were not ranked in the Top 10. The scores are shown below.

Arizona (Unranked) 31 – 24 Oregon (2)
Alabama (3) 17 – 23 Ole Miss (11)
Oklahoma (4) 33 – 37 TCU (25)
Texas A&M (6) 31 – 48 Mississippi State (12)
Utah (Unranked) 30 – 28 UCLA (8)

Why All Leaders Should Read The 4-Hour Workweek

I recently finished reading the book The 4-Hour Workweek: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich (Expanded and Updated) by Timothy Ferriss. This book is amazing and has a lot of great tips for leaders.

Reading the title you may ask, “How can you be a great leader if you only work 4 hours a week?” Well, the principles you will learn from this book will help you to be a more focused and purposeful leader. Tim Ferriss teaches you things you can do to eliminate the fluff from your life so that you don’t spend time doing things that others could or should be doing and you will learn how to actively determine what is worth your time and what is not.

The 4-Hour Workweek

When I read this book there were many great lessons and pointers that will help me to be a better leader and be more successful in the future. Of all the great things I learned, there were five main points that will benefit leaders. Those points are:

1.  Define what you want out of life rather than your career.

As a leader, it is really easy to get caught up in seeking the next step of progress as you try to climb the corporate ladder. You can become so focused on the next promotion or advancement that you lose sight of why you are doing what you are doing. You should instead focus on what you want out of life, i.e. your personal, family, and educational goals, trips you would like to take, places you would like to see and things you would like to do.

When you focus on what you want out of life rather than a career, it is much easier to change your job or occupation to fit your life goals.  This approach allows you to be more successful as a leader because it causes you to think more deeply about what you spend your time doing.  If you are a leader and your heart isn’t in it, you probably won’t be the best leader you could be.  You will probably only be a half-hearted leader at best if your heart is in a different place. A Tribute To One Of My Heroes

In life, there are some leaders that have such a great impact on you that it changes who you are.  Their influence goes beyond a single moment and lasts days, weeks, or years into the future.  People that have this impact are very special.  When you find someone that has that effect on you, it would be wise to pay close attention to the lessons they teach you and to savor the time you spend with with them.

A Tribute To Doris Jones

I had a person like that in my life for 31 years of my life.  That was my grandma, Doris Jones.  If you are a regular follower of my website, you may have noticed that I haven’t posted much for the past month.  The reason was that my grandma took a dive for the worst with her health and passed away on June 12, 2013.  It has been a challenging time for my family and me, but also a time filled with family, love, and the sharing of great memories.  My grandma was a great lady and one of my biggest heroes.  As a tribute to her, the rest of this post is her obituary.

A Tribute To My Hero

Doris Gwendolyn Logan Jones was born May 5, 1926, to Dr. William and Florence Logan in Billings and died of natural causes on June 12, 2013, surrounded by her loving family. She is survived by her loving husband, Edward Jones; her five children Mark (Cathy) of Anchorage, Alaska, Kent (Kimberly), Stan (Christine), Cliff (Diane), all of Billings and Konni Davis (Tim) of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Also surviving are her brothers, Kenneth Logan (Ruth) of Warner Robbins, Ga., John Logan (Gwen) of Dearborn, Mich.; 23 grandchildren and 42 great-grandchildren. Take Leadership Responsibilities Seriously

As a leader, you have many leadership responsibilities.  Those you lead also have many responsibilities.  In many cases, however, their responsibilities are your leadership responsibilities delegated to them.  As a leader, you need to own up to your leadership responsibilities.

Does President Obama Understand His Leadership Responsibilities?

Recently there was an article in the Wall Street Journal titled, “Scandals Prompt Doubt About Honesty” written by Patrick O’Connor and Rebecca Ballhaus. The article said, “Recent controversies surrounding the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and other government agencies have sown doubts about the honesty of the Obama administration, but most people don’t hold the president personally responsible for the agency actions, a new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll finds.”

The article explained that the results of a recent poll showed that 55% of respondents felt that there was a significant lack of honesty in the IRS.   Those polled, however, did not feel the president was responsible for the dishonestly.  “Americans at this point don’t hold the president personally responsible for any of the three major controversies that have dominated Washington since early May, the Journal/NBC poll found.” [Read more…] about Take Leadership Responsibilities Seriously
