Tip of the Week
Hi friends! I hope you are doing well and enjoying life. Today, I want to start with a quick tip. As a leader or as a follower, it is so important to have patience, understanding, and just be kind.
Most leaders sincerely care about the well-being of those they lead. They work hard and do their very best. Give them the benefit of the doubt and don’t be overly critical.
If you don’t understand why they are doing something a certain way, just ask them. You never know what demands, challenges, or difficulties they face, so be understanding, patient, and try to put yourself in their shoes.
Sneak Peek
In today’s episode, we are going to look at types of feedback, how to request and give it, and four groups from which to ask feedback.

A Story of Feedback
Early in my professional career, I had a lunch meeting with a vice president in my organization. I asked her for tips to move up the corporate ladder and how she moved up quickly. She said it all boiled down to one thing! Feedback. She recommended that I request feedback from as many people as I could and then do my best to improve each step of the way.
Types of Feedback
Appreciation – “Good Job!” “Thank you!” “Keep up the good work!”
Coaching – Giving or seeking direction. “Work on this or that to improve your skills.”
Evaluation – End of a large project, end of the year, job interview, promotion, etc.
How To Request Feedback
Here’s a list of methods you can use to request feedback:
- Survey
- One-on-one
- Group setting
- Scheduled or informal
How To Give Feedback
Focus on past action and performance based on observations. Focus on the action, not the person. “This behavior led to this result. This result is great or unacceptable.” NOT “You did this and you are good or bad.”
Be very specific. If you are general, it is very hard to improve. Don’t say, “You need to be more kind.” Instead say, “When you were speaking to people on the team and said XYZ, everyone changed their body language to appear put off.”
4 Groups from which you should Request Feedback
Here are four groups of people from which you should request feedback:
- Subordinates
- Coworkers/Equals
- Leaders
- Customers/Outside Stakeholders
