Hi Friends! Leadership is not easy and there is a lot you can be afraid of! In this episode, I am going to talk about some of the fears we can have in leadership and how we can have courage to overcome them.
Fears As a Leader
It seems like most, if not all, people have something they really fear. Fears can be very real at times. They can cause people to freeze up and even tremble. Other times, fear keeps people from moving forward towards their goals.
As a leader, it can be easy to let fear get a hold of you. There are many things to fear as a leader. Some of those fears may include:
- Fear of rejection
- Fear of inadequacy
- Fear of the unknown
- Fear of underperformance
- Fear of lack of control
It is much easier said than done, but when you are the leader, you cannot let fear take control of you. If you let fear have a hold on you, you will become an ineffective leader. When you let fear take a hold of you, you are giving it control over you. Fear can be debilitating if you let it be.
Have Courage to be The Leader
A lot of fear is bad, but a little fear is okay when it motivates you to be better, work harder, and do more. Use fear to motivate you to do your best!
So what is the opposite of fear? The opposite of fear is courage! When you have courage, you look past your fears to the end result. If you have courage, you will act in the face of uncertainty. Eleanor Roosevelt said: “You gain strength, experience and confidence by every experience where you really stop to look fear in the face… You must do the thing you cannot do.”
I love that quote because each of us can look fear in the face and tell it to run the other way because we are not afraid!
As a leader, you cannot succeed if you don’t have courage. Just as there are many things you can fear, there are also many ways you can show courage. Some of those include:
- Courage to be yourself
- Courage to do what’s right
- Courage to do your best
- Courage to move forward when the future is unknown
- Courage to face your fears
- Courage to deliver bad news when necessary
As a leader, you may face internal battles between fear and courage. There is no fear that you cannot overcome with courage.
Punch Fear in the Face!
A friend of mine use to say, “Go up to what you fear and punch fear in the face!” We can’t let fear get the best of us. We must punch it in the face like my friend said. We can only do that when we have courage!
I know it’s not easy to do, but you can do it! You can be empowered to overcome your fears no matter what the cost is!
