Be Strategic in Your Posts

By Brandon W. Jones on December 31, 2013 0

Over the last two years I have gone back and forth on how I wrote posts for Leadership Done Right. Sometimes I have been really strategic, while other times I just posted whatever was on my mind. Through this process I have learned some valuable lessons. One lesson I learned is that it is very important to be strategic in your posts.

Why should you be strategic?

1. So your audience knows what to expect. When you are strategic, you choose specific themes and let your audience know when and why you will talk about them. They should also know what you will post about and how it will help them. It also lets them know when to expect a new post. This helps your audience stay in tune with what you will talk about.

Be Strategic in Your Posts

2. To create value for your audience. People are not going to come to your website unless they learn something, gain a new insight, or receive some other value. When you are strategic, your purpose is to write quality posts for your audience. You write with value creation as your main theme.

3. So you stay on track with your site’s goals and objectives. Have you ever visited a website that talked about a new subject every week? Or one where you had no clue what their point was? Or even one that didn’t have a direction? When you are strategic, you stick to your goals and objectives. You determine your website’s theme and stick to it. If ever you deviate from your theme you only do it to illustrate a point that directly ties into your theme; there is always a clearly defined purpose for the deviation.

How can you be strategic?

1. Plan out your posts before you write them. When you decide to write a post, it is best to create an outline first before you write. This guides your thoughts and helps you stay on topic. In your outline, define the main and supporting points you will make. This will make your posts easy to follow and understand. You don’t want to be that person that just writes with no outline or purpose that is hard to follow.

2. Determine the frequency that you will post. Whether you want to post once a month, once a week, or three to five times a week, determine your frequency and do all you can to stick to it. This is not an easy thing to do because things in life come up that make it difficult to post, but as you consistently post your following will grow.

3. Create a schedule for your site. There are different ways that you can create a schedule for your site. Some people schedule every Monday for a guest post, every Wednesday for a video post and every Friday for a podcast. Others determine that each month they will pick a new topic related to their specific subject matter and elaborate on that. There are also other ways to post that are completely different. Whatever your schedule is, stick to it so your audience has consistency.

How I learned to be strategic

I have had to learn these principles the hard way. I have not been great at following them. Whenever I have followed these principles, I have grown a following and kept readers engaged. When I have deviated, however, I have lost readers and followers.
