Most of people have had leaders that were very consistent, as well as, others that were inconsistent. Consistency is very important as a leader. I want to address two points related to consistency.
Inconsistency
In order to understand the importance of consistency, you must first understand what happens with inconsistency. When leaders are inconsistent many problems occur. The inconsistency comes in many forms. Some forms of leadership inconsistency occur when leaders treat certain employees different than others. It can also be seen by how they react in different ways for the same situation. Another form of is when leaders interpret the organizations rules differently at different times so that it helps them. Each of these inconsistencies can cause a significant amount of frustration amongst employees.
When leaders are inconsistent, their followers tend to be more insecure about themselves because they don’t know from one day to the next what the leader is going to do or how they are going to respond. Once a leader is inconsistent in one area, it becomes much easier to be inconsistent in other areas. Sometimes the inconsistency can manifest through leaders showing favoritism toward certain followers and not towards others. Amongst followers, inconsistency can breed discontent. Leaders should avoid inconsistency at all cost.
Consistency
Leaders must be very consistent. They must treat all followers fair and equal. In addition, they must also be consistent in their approach to different situations and their interpretation of the rules. The consistency is very important in the leader because it creates stability and trust in the followers. When a leader is consistent, the followers know exactly what to expect from their leaders.
Consistency doesn’t mean leaders can’t grow, progress, and change; it just means leaders need to behave in a similar manner in given situations. Growth is very important to being a good leader.
