Slow Down and Lose or Speed Up and Win, You Choose

By Brandon W. Jones on March 25, 2014 1

Change is happening at a faster pace now than it ever has in the past. There are new technological advances everyday. There are also new studies everyday that teach us how to be more productive and do things more effectively. With all the advances, people have the choice to either slow down and lose or speed up and win.

Why do people slow down?

With the ever-increasing pace of change, some people fail to keep up. So what do they do? They just slow down. They decide that since they can’t keep up, they might as well slow down. Does this approach make sense?

Slow Down and Lose or Speed Up and Win, You ChooseWhen people slow down for change, there are many negative side effects. Three of those side effects are:

1. Slow Down = Get Further Behind

Rather than pick up the speed to keep up with change, people slow down so they can take everything in to handle it. As a result, they get more behind, and change becomes more difficult to manage. Additionally, they feel more frustration and anger.

2. Slow Down = Become Overwhelmed

With the rapid speed of change, you can easily become overwhelmed. When that happens, the instinctual response is to slow down and proceed with caution. That, however, doesn’t help anything. The more you slow down, they more things pile up, and the more you feel overwhelmed.

3. Slow Down = Lose Motivation

Have you ever started down a road where you were excited about something new and wanted to tell everyone about it? Then you came to a point where you realized you had to change what you were doing? All of a sudden, you felt a loss of motivation.

Unexpected change can give a complete loss of motivation. This occurs most often when you are working towards a specific goal or objective and the parameters for reaching that goal change.

Speed Up and Win by Overcoming the Change Slow down

So what do you do when change comes your way? Do you pick up your pace, move along at the same pace as always, or slow down? If you have slowed down in the past, that doesn’t mean you have to slow down now or in the future. You can speed up with the new challenges you face and win. You can do things differently than you did in the past, so you are more effective than ever before.

Make a Plan to Deal with Change

You know that change will come your way in the future. You will change jobs at some point, get a new boss, retire, move to a new area, have kids, send kids to college, lose a loved one or family member, or have some other type of change in your life.

Win by deciding right now how you will approach change. Choose to speed up so you can handle change with ease. This will make it easier for you to handle the change when it does come.

Have Faith in Yourself

Change is difficult and there are bumpy roads with change, but you can make it through with faith in yourself and your decisions. You have made it to where you are by having faith in yourself and your ability to reach your goals. Why stop now? You can keep on accomplishing great things into the future just as you always have.

What are your thoughts?

Have you ever slowed down when you encountered change? What was the result? What did you learn from that experience? How did you change your actions going forward? Have you sped up and won when going through change? How did it work out for you when you took that approach? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below!

Great principle Brandon! The key is to keep moving forward no matter if we see success or failure, the speed up approach allows us to always be winning.
