When you have a desire to be a leader, it is important to be prepared for your moment to come. Every great leader had to go through many experiences before they were the great leader.

How to Be Prepared
In order to be prepared for your moment to come, you must take the right preparatory steps. You can’t just show up and expect to be ready without going through the necessary preparation. The following five steps indicate things you can do to be prepared for your moment.
1. Identify your Strengths and Weaknesses
Before you know how to improve, you must know where you need improvement. You can know where to improve by identifying your strengths and weaknesses. There are several books and even tests that specifically address how to find your strengths. Some of the top rated strength finder books are:
- StrengthsFinder 2.0 by Tom Rath
- Strengths Based Leadership: Great Leaders, Teams, and Why People Follow by Tom Rath
- Entrepreneurial Strengthsfinder by Jim Clifton
- Emotional Intelligence 2.0 by Travis Bradberry
- Now, Discover Your Strengths by Marcus Buckingham
2. Emphasize your Strengths
People aren’t successful because they are the best at everything, they are successful because they know how to effectively emphasize their strengths for the benefit of others. Once you know your strengths, it is important to emphasize them. You can emphasize your strengths by focusing on what you are good at and delegating to others the things you are not as good at. That way you your strengths will shine through.
3. Get Educated
To be prepared, you can get educated in a number of ways. The list below shows just a few of the many ways you can get educated:
- Read books
- Take an online course
- Go to a community college
- Work with a mastermind group
- Enroll in a specialized training course
- Study the experiences of others
4. Gain Necessary Experience
There are many things that you can learn from books or some of the other sources listed above, but for some things there is no substitute to experience. You can be taught all there is to know about leading a team through a challenging situation, but until you are the one that has to lead them you don’t fully understand what it is like. In a lot of cases it takes experience to get experience. If that is the case for what you are seeking, try to gain the needed experience through other avenues. Give your time to a non-profit organization, start a side business, or volunteer to help in the community. If you can show others that you are doing your best to be prepared for the next opportunity, they will recognize your value and be willing to take a chance on you.
5. Work on your Soft Skills
In the internet age, soft skills are highly sought after because they will set you apart from the rest. Computers can be used to optimize and/or eliminate many of the mundane tasks, but there is no substitute for excellent soft skills. If you develop your soft skills, you will be leaps and bounds above the rest.
If you follow the steps outlined above, you be much more prepared for your moment when it comes. You will be able to shine because others will see that you have worked hard to prepare.
