Why Humility Is A Leadership Strength

One leadership quality that has become less and less popular is humility. People feel like in order to compete in the business world they have to be strong, competitive, and anything but humble. Humility is looked at, in many cases, as a weakness. I believe, however, that humility is a strength.

I would like to suggest four reasons why humility is a strength and not a weakness.

1. Humility is NOT Insecurity.

Several years ago, I had a leader in Boy Scouts that taught me what it means to obtain leadership excellence.  He worked as a physician’s assistant and was very busy at times, but he always made himself available to me and other boys in our scout troop.  In his leadership he showed vision, charisma, innovation, honesty, accountability, integrity, compassion, honor, trust, boldness, confidence, work ethic, and many other great leadership traits.  At each activity, he required that we live up to the standards that he lived by and those that were taught in boy scouts. Because I was young, this had a great impression on me.  I learned a lot from him.  He gave me confidence that it was possible to be the person that we were taught to be by how he embodied leadership excellence. 4 Characteristics Of The Silent Leader

Many of us have had a silent leader in our lives.  The silent leader has a powerful impact on you because they don’t have to say much to be a great leader.  They set a strong positive example for everyone to follow.  Also, when they lead, others follow just because of who they are.

I will use the pronoun “he” throughout this post to mean both he and she rather than go back and forth between “he/she” and “him/her”.  I do not intend offend anyone.

Four Characteristics of a Silent Leader

Each silent leader that I have met had some if not all of the following four characteristics.

Example

A silent leader understands that he sets the example for those he leads.  He knows that he cannot expect his followers to do anything he is not willing to do, so he sets the best example he can for his followers.  In addition, the silent leader realizes that everything that happens around him starts with what he does.  If he sets a good example, people are more likely to do good while if he sets a bad example, others will be more likely to make poor choices as well.  To set a good example, the silent leader takes the initiative and determines how he is going to act in any given situation before the situation arrives so that he can make good choices.

Make Your Choice Count

As everyone knows, today is the day of the presidential election in the United States Of America.  Everyone that is 18 years old or older has the opportunity to go out and vote.  By voting, each person can make their choice known.  They have their voice in what they want and don’t want in the government and in the policies for the future. 

This ability vote is very powerful because it allows you to actively make a choice on what your future brings.  By voting, you have to make a choice on what you do and don’t support.  If you choose not to vote, you are making the choice that no matter the outcome, you accept the consequences by not taking a stance.  When you vote, you make a choice beforehand on whether or not you are going to study the topics and become educated or just go with a guess based on a couple of advertisements you heard on the radio or saw on T.V.

Voting is a very important manifestation of your choice, however, there are many other aspects of your life where you make choices as well.  As a matter of fact, everyday you have hundreds of choices.  You must decide what you are going to wear, what you are going to eat, how fast you will drive to work, what route you will take, whether you will try for a new job or opportunity, etc. and the list goes on.  Some of the choices you make each day are very inconsequential while others have major impacts on the direction you go for the future.
