Entrepreneurship to Leadership

From age 21 on, Kevin has always started and run companies. “When I think back on my early failures, it’s been either because I didn’t know how to use time to be productive, or because I didn’t know how to lead people. I didn’t understand the importance of leadership.”

“Leadership is really THE most important variable to having a successful life, whether you’re in business or not. When I sold the last company, I decided that while I am taking some time away from being an entrepreneur, let me just explore, think harder, and share what I have learned about leadership and productivity. It’s been kind of a one decade pause to reflect on what’s worked for me and what hasn’t.” [Read more…] about Podcast Episode #34 — Feedback — The Most Powerful Keys to Success with Kevin Kruse

Help People Understand Change

By Brandon W. Jones on November 9, 2014 0

Why People Don't Change - Reason #1

Have you ever recommended a change you felt was VERY important and valuable, but got rejected? Or, recommended a change that could dramatically improve your business or drastically improve the lives of others and people didn’t listen? So why did they not listen to you or implement the change? Did they not like you? Was your idea weird and too far out there for people to accept?

People Don’t Understand Change

In most cases it probably wasn’t a personality conflict, personal dislikes, or even that the idea was too far out. They probably declined your change request with no idea of the significant positive difference it would make.

Why People Don't Change - Reason #1

They probably didn’t understand change or what change meant. When it came down to it, they probably didn’t want the change because they lacked understanding.

Leaders often try to implement change without helping people understand what the change means. They don’t fully explain it enough for people to understand the change and accept it.

When people are asked to change without understanding, they often fight the change. They fear the change will hurt them, their standing with the company, or cause some other negative effect in their lives. [Read more…] about Help People Understand Change

This Week’s Top 5 Leadership Posts – 6/13/2012

By Brandon W. Jones on June 13, 2012 0

The calling/responsibility of leadership is an important responsibility.  You must take it seriously because what you do as a leader each day has a major impact on where you end up long term.  The posts below are great posts because they help you to understand how to be a better leader.

Great Leaders Develops Both Themselves And Those They Lead By Beth Miller

Congratulations! You’ve worked hard to be a leader in your company. But don’t think you can sit back and relax from now on because great leaders understand that they must always be developing themselves and their employees.

Leaders lead others, but sometimes they don’t realize that the best leaders never stop improving themselves; they are passionate about learning and teaching, and their passion spreads to those who work around them.

It has been said that leaders are discovered, but really they are developed. Success is an ongoing process of improvement and adjustments.

Brandon’s Thoughts
As Beth pointed out, leaders must focus on their own improvement on a regular basis.  They must also focus on the development of those they lead.  As they train those they lead, they improve their team and the skills of their group.  The training helps their team be more successful because it will increase the overall skills.  Many leaders have a fear that training their followers is bad because it will make their followers replace them as the leader.  In reality, the opposite is more often the truth; the leaders that train their followers to be successful end up being more successful themselves.  By helping others succeed, they help themselves to move up the ladder because people see them as effective leaders. What You Should Be Dedicated To As A Leader

By Brandon W. Jones on June 11, 2012 1

In leadership, there are many things competing for your time.  As a leader, it is a challenge to effectively identify what is worth your time and what is not.  It is important to give your full effort to the things you decide to do.  It is better to be dedicated to a few things to be able to give your full effort, than to not be dedicated and give a mediocre effort to many things.

The more dedicated you are to something, the more time you will devote to it. Although you can’t always decide where you spend your time due to various responsibilities, it is important to know when to delegate and when do it yourself. By effectively delegating, you give yourself more time to be dedicated to what is most important to you.

So what does it mean to be dedicated? Dictionary.com defines the word dedicate as, “to devote wholly and earnestly, as to some person or purpose.” So what should you be dedicated to? As a leader, it is important spend your time doing the most important things. I have seen many leaders that have said that they were dedicated to one thing or another, yet they spend very little time on it. Are they really dedicated to it? I would say that they are not.
