Apollo 13

Apollo 13 was the seventh manned mission in the Apollo space program and the third intended to land on the Moon. The craft was launched on April 11, 1970, at 1:13 PM CST from the Kennedy Space Center, Florida, but the lunar landing was aborted after an oxygen tank exploded two days later, crippling the Service Module (SM) upon which the Command Module (CM) had depended.

The Problems

Following the explosion, the crew onboard realized there were many problems with their equipment. Their chance to make it back to earth kept dwindling as time went on. Flight Control located in Houston, urgently provided assistance in resolving the issues they were encountering. They had to desperately search for answers to unique problems. They listed all the problems they could think of.

  • Batteries may freeze
  • Water system may freeze
  • Propellant may freeze
  • There were a large number survival issues
  • How do we get back through the earth’s atmosphere

Leaders, Are You Aware Or Involved?

Recently, I’ve been thinking about the difference between leaders being aware or involved. For leaders there is a big difference between aware or involved when they lead.

The aware leader wants to be up to speed on everything that is going on, but they don’t have to be the one making decisions their employees can make.  Once they are up to speed, they trust their employees to make the right decisions.  They give their employees the ability to make things happen because they take themselves out of the decision making process where they don’t need to be included.

What Were They Thinking?

Several years ago, I learned a very valuable leadership lesson from my mom.  We were having a discussion about different people.  At the time, I was very frustrated because some one I knew had done something that didn’t make sense to me.  I had thought through the whole situation before I came to that conclusion and their actions just didn’t make sense.

What Were They Thinking?

My mom heard my frustrations and said, “Brandon, some people just don’t think the same way you think. You may find yourself asking the question, ‘What were they thinking?'” She then went on to explain that each person has a completely different upbringing and background so they think differently.  That, in some ways, was a turning point in my life.  She helped me to understand the importance of trying to see things through other people’s eyes.

Know Your Target Audience

In leadership it is very important to see things from the other person’s point of view. Whether you are talking to your employees, people in other departments, or your management team, you must know how to understand the other point of view.  I have some suggestions on how to try and think how others think.
