Peter Guber – Your Story Makes The Difference

By Brandon W. Jones on October 17, 2014 0

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to listen to Peter Guber speak at the High Desert Opportunity in Victorville, CA. Peter Guber is an executive, entrepreneur, and a New York Times Best Selling Author. He is the Chairman and CEO of Mandalay Entertainment and a co-owner of two professional sports teams: Golden State Warriors of the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the Los Angeles Dodgers of Major League Baseball (MLB). Additionally, Peter is the CEO of Dick Clark Productions, and he is a professor at the UCLA School of Theater Film and Television and the Anderson School of Management, and an Entertainment and Media Analyst for Fox Business News.

Peter Guber has an incredible background and a lot of experience. He has been a leader all his life in multiple settings. One of my favorite quotes from him was: [Read more…] about Peter Guber – Your Story Makes The Difference

Be Prepared For Your Moment

By Brandon W. Jones on October 6, 2014 0

Be Prepared For Your Moment

I am a big sports fan and follow most professional and college sports.  With the Fall upon us, it is not uncommon for college and professional football to be on TV at my house. I have my favorite teams in both college and the pros and I love watching them play whenever possible.

Be Prepared For Your Moment

This week the college football rankings got turned upside down. For the first time in history, five of the top eight teams in the AP Top 25 poll lost in the same week. Two of the teams that pulled the upset were previously unranked and the other three were not ranked in the Top 10. The scores are shown below.

Arizona (Unranked) 31 – 24 Oregon (2)
Alabama (3) 17 – 23 Ole Miss (11)
Oklahoma (4) 33 – 37 TCU (25)
Texas A&M (6) 31 – 48 Mississippi State (12)
Utah (Unranked) 30 – 28 UCLA (8)

Because of the upsets, the AP Top 25 poll rankings were completely flipped. The new rankings of the teams involved in the upset are as follows (winning teams are bolded):  [Read more…] about Be Prepared For Your Moment

Are You A Great Leader If Your Organization Fails?

By Brandon W. Jones on April 4, 2012 0

Are you a great leader if your organization fails to meet expectations? Or if you aren’t meeting your goals, are you a great leader?

Carmelo Anthony and The Knicks

Today, the Wall Street Journal article Anthony: The Biggest (Playoff) Loser talked about Carmelo Anthony and his poor playoff performance. Carmelo Anthony traded to the New York Knicks NBA basketball team to bring a championship to New York.

Are You A Great Leader If Your Organization Fails?

The article states, “But considering the way Anthony’s teams have performed in the postseason, the Knicks would be lucky to even win a game.” It then explained that Anthony has played 50 career playoff games and has a record of 16-34. His winning percentage of .320 is “the worst of any player who has appeared in that many postseason games since 1991-92.” [Read more…] about Are You A Great Leader If Your Organization Fails?

How Important is Environment?

By Brandon W. Jones on February 22, 2010 0

The blog by Bob Sutton titled “Work Matters” and the article “Can Personality Be Changed?” by Carol S. Dweck both talk about how personality is developed and beliefs/knowledge are shaped. Many people have the idea that each person is born with their individual personality and that it will not change through life experiences or environment. Others believe that an individual’s personality is shaped continually through life.

Is It The Environment?

In a similar sense, some believe that people are either born smart or ignorant. They feel that those who will be successful in life are born that way, while those who are unsuccessful are also born that way. On the other hand, some people believe success or failure of an individual is a choice resulting from their behaviors.

How Important is Environment?

Each person is born with a distinct personality, but ideas and beliefs change as each person journeys through life. Each person, to a large extent, is born with the foundation of their personality. Then through life experiences they develop the structure of their personality. Each person is born with specific talents and personality traits that they can either develop or not develop through life experiences. Some of those personality traits may include humility, knowledge, wisdom, etc. Talents may include art, music, sports, etc. While each individual may have specific talents or personality traits that they are born with, it is possible to obtain a new talent or trait through practice and dedication.
