How Are You Transparent In Your Leadership?

By Brandon W. Jones on February 12, 2013 0

Is it possible to be transparent as a leader?

Recently, I had an experience where I worked with another leader to make a change. The change would affect all the people we lead, so it was important that we be transparent. We informed everyone that the change would happen and tried to fill them in on all the details. Is it possible to be transparent as a leader?

We also explained that the change needed to happen for the progress of the organization and for the desired outcome. From there, we asked for everyone’s input and feedback prior to making the change. We continued to make this request over and over again for many months prior to making the change.

We made this request for several months and everyone told us they trusted us and the direction we were going. They gave us their vote of confidence numerous times and said they were okay with any changes that would come on the fly because they felt we had been transparent. This gave us confidence to move forward with our plan.

Should Leaders Be Transparent?

By Brandon W. Jones on February 11, 2013 4

This week the President of the United States, President Barack Obama, will give the State of the Union address.  His goal is to outline his plans, expectations, and personal agenda for 2013.  In an attempt to be transparent, he is expected to let the country know what he plans to do to address each of the major domestic issues facing the country.  Some of those issues include immigration, gun control, and education.  In addition, he is expected to address some of the international issues the U.S. faces like the war in Afghanistan and global climate change.

Transparent Leadership

Many people throughout the country are anxiously waiting to see what he has to say because it will likely coincide with the federal budget for this year.  After his speech, however, there will be a lag time before people will really know the specifics of the federal budget because President Obama has not finished his 2013 budget.  He is not expected to send it to Congress until mid-March.  (In years past, the President gave his State of the Union address at the same time as the budget was released.)

Great Work is Hard Work by Wally Bock

The best description of a restaurant business model I’ve ever heard came from Mario Batali:

“We buy food. We fix it up. And we sell it at a profit.”

Most businesses are just that simple. And in the most successful companies, there are people who are excited about and concentrating on the core business, whatever  their company equivalent is to buying food and fixing it up.

[…] Like great companies, great business teams are excited about the work they do. Foster excitement in the work. Revel in it.

Brandon’s Thoughts
In leadership you need to focus on your core strengths.  It can be easy to focus on the new trend or fad and get away from your core competencies, but as you do that, you can slowly alienate your core customers.  It is very important to stay relevant by changing to keep up with your competition, but you must keep your core values.  [Read more…] about This Week’s Top 5 Leadership Blog Posts

Dissension in the Ranks at Nordstrom

By Brandon W. Jones on February 28, 2010 0

The system at Nordstrom was a failed system. It did not reward the employees based on the hours that the employees put in. There are three areas that the company went wrong.

Three Downfalls of Nordstrom’s Approach

First, it didn’t let the employees know upfront what kind of hours they would be expected to work. Second, it had an overly strong competition between the sales associates within the stores. And third, their pay structure was broken. All three of the above points illustrate that the system was broken.

Dissension in the Ranks at Nordstrom

1. Nordstrom’s Compensation System

As the first point indicates, Nordstrom would hire people under a specific set of duties and responsibilities and expect a completely different set. The managers wouldn’t explain how the compensation system was going to be set up based on the sales per hour structure. Once the employee was hired on, they would then expect them to work extra hours without pay or they would give them bad reviews as not being a team player.
