7 Leadership Lessons from Steve Jobs

Steve Jobs will be remembered for centuries to come. It’s quite amazing that as a college dropout, he revolutionized the world with his epic invention. Today, his leadership qualities are preached to let this generation know how Steve Jobs ruled over the hearts of his co-workers.
Even after his death, Steve Jobs’ leadership qualities are an inspiration for future business leaders. Let’s see the lessons we can learn from Steve Jobs to bring a positive change in our life:
1. Simplify
Apple’s first marketing brochure said, “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.” This actually explains Steve Jobs’ creativity and how he preferred living a simple lifestyle. He always aimed for simplicity no matter what. This is why, even now, Apple invents products that are user-friendly. He once said, “It takes a lot of hard work, to make something simple, to truly understand the underlying challenges and come up with elegant solutions.”
Steve Jobs always created the simplest solutions to the most difficult problems. For example, the design of the iPod interface, shows how Jobs always found ways to cut clutter. He eliminated unnecessary things to make the product simpler. His cutting-edge simplicity always inspired his teams and people he worked with.
2. Take Responsibility End-To-End
Steve Jobs knew that everything had to be simple, so when creating the iPod he made sure that hardware, software, and peripheral devices were seamlessly integrated. This was the Apple ecosystem.
When he thought of making simple things he also took end-to-end responsibility to provide the best user experience. It is not only about the user experience; it is about how to manage everything altogether. He had a passion for perfection which made him progress more and more every day.
3. Take The Lead
Steve Jobs’ work didn’t end after creating an innovative company, but it got tougher when every day became a challenge and he and his company had to leapfrog to maintain that leading position. When Apple created iMac, they had everything in it except a tool for music. This is where he felt that he was lacking and they missed something.
The company took a leap and came up with the innovation of iTunes. It was one innovation which allowed users to share, buy, manage, store and play music without hassle. But, this wasn’t the end, he realized his idea could be used differently by adding a music player in phones for mobile phone users. He again took the lead and came up with the idea of the iPhone.
4. Focus On Products Before Profits
It is a fact that innovations are introduced in the market to gain more profit. But take a moment to look at it from Jobs’ perspective; when he and his team designed the original Macintosh in the 1980s, he wanted it to be “insanely great.” There was no profit maximization or cost trade-offs involved. He told his original team leader, “Don’t worry about the price, just specify the computer’s abilities.” His only focus was to build glitch-free and innovative products, in such situations, profit always follows.
5. Say No To Focus Groups
According to most, focus groups help in getting more knowledge about what a consumer wants. Jobs thought totally the opposite. He once replied to one of his team members who asked to do some market research by saying, “Customers don’t know what they want until we’ve shown them.” He kept the needs of the consumer in mind but, always made sure to provide them with something better than their expectations.
6. Push Your Boundaries
We all can relate to the fact that Steve Jobs has provided us with the technology that was beyond our imagination. He had the ability to push people to do the impossible. Whatever he put his mind to, he pushed himself and people around him to do the impossible.
7. Get A Hunger For Perfection
There is always room for improving things. Perfection is what made Steve Jobs and Apple famous and glitch-free. The Apple products we use are so perfectly crafted for consumers that we never thought of going back to where the idea was conceived. During the development of every product, he hit the pause button, and went back to the drawing board to find out the point where he didn’t feel the perfection.
This post contains only seven points that made Steve Jobs great, but it is not all. There are many leadership lessons to be learned from every single experience, invention and innovation from Steve Jobs’ life. We can learn so much about leadership from his exemplary life.
