Richard’s Professional Experience and Educational Background

He is a principal at Provanedge and has held a variety of positions in leadership. He was the director of a community service organization, then held back to back roles as the department director for Community Health Care. From there, he became the CISD Team Administrator at Western Virginia EMS Council. Currently, in addition to roles and responsibilities as Provanedge, he is also a Non Executive Director for Kester Bottling Company.

He graduated from The College of William and Mary with a doctorate degree in Higher Education and received his Master’s degree in divinity from Emory University. He took his education very seriously and earned the honors of Summa Cum Laude and Magna Cum Laude respectively.

Lead for Transformation

Richard explained that the key to his background is that his goal is always to lead for transformation. “We mature throughout life. I’m not saying that any role I’ve had previously was less mature than the one I’m doing now. Prepare Yourself Then Prepare Others

If you have you ever flown on an airplane, you may not have realized that you heard a very important leadership lesson while you were sitting in your seat waiting to take off. You are probably reading this thinking, “What leadership lesson could I possibly learn sitting in my seat on an airplane?”

Each time you get on an airplane, the flight attendants get up and go through a list of the safety features on the plane. They explain the overhead breathing masks, life jackets, and that your seat cushion can be used as a floatation device.

The key leadership phrase comes in the statement, “Oxygen and the air pressure are always being monitored. In the event of a decompression, an oxygen mask will automatically appear in front of you. To start the flow of oxygen, pull the mask towards you. Place it firmly over your nose and mouth, secure the elastic band behind your head, and breathe normally. Although the bag does not inflate, oxygen is flowing to the mask. If you are traveling with a child or someone who requires assistance, secure your mask on first, and then assist the other person.”

Planning For Success

Recently, I attended a retirement planning workshop. The presenter explained the importance of planning for success by doing the right things today. He explained that with all the workshops and coaching he does, he runs into many people that aren’t planning or did not plan for their retirement. That is evident when they have no money in savings and decide to retire in one year. It is also evident when they don’t review their savings to determine if it is enough for their retirement. Also, occasionally he runs into people that worked way longer than needed because they didn’t understand what they wanted retirement to look like for them.

Your Financial Plan

The most important thing people can do is review and understand their current financial situation, future retirement goals, and options available to get where they want to be. You’re Fired!

None of us ever want to say this or hear it. It is something we feel we won’t have to experience. Almost as if we are immune to it. Unfortunately, it happens far too. To an HR professional, having a situation or issue rise to a level warranting termination equates to failure. It is our role, as HR professionals, to handle escalated or complex issues/concerns and decide on the right approach. This makes each disciplinary action or review a critical one that can decide an individual’s fate.

Terminations are costly, carry liability, counterproductive, and affect workforce morale. Taking appropriate steps before letting it escalate to the point of termination can prevent these detrimental outcomes. Through my personal work experience and that of others I have learned that it comes down to a few basic factors. Give each concern adequate time, provide regular training, set clear expectations, and involve subject matter experts.

Each problem should be given proper due diligence.

I have dealt with legal charges that have stemmed purely from managers not taking matters seriously. If an employee takes it upon themselves to tell you about an issue they are encountering, it is severe enough to require your consideration. Look into the matter with care, courtesy, and thoroughness. Keep in mind that follow-up with the employee who raised the concern is as important as the investigation itself.
