Leadership Consistency

By Brandon W. Jones on June 1, 2011 4

Most of people have had leaders that were very consistent, as well as, others that were inconsistent. Consistency is very important as a leader.  I want to address two points related to consistency.

Leadership Consistency

Inconsistency

In order to understand the importance of consistency, you must first understand what happens with inconsistency.  When leaders are inconsistent many problems occur.  The inconsistency comes in many forms.  Some forms of leadership inconsistency occur when leaders treat certain employees different than others.  [Read more…] about Leadership Consistency

Support From Friends and Family

By Brandon W. Jones on May 17, 2011 3

All leaders need to have a certain amount of support to be successful.  Without the support of friends, family, and coworkers, it is much harder to succeed.  Their support helps to buoy you up when life gets you down.  The support they give comes as they give encouragement and support through the hard times, as well as, the good times.

University of Nevada – Reno – Master’s of Business Administration

Through the entire MBA program I had complete support from my wife.  There were many times that I had to spend long hours at school and only saw her as I got home and got ready for bed.  She was always there to help me through the hard times by giving me encouragement and support.

Sense of Accomplishment

By Brandon W. Jones on May 16, 2011 2

Recently, I’ve had a much harder time posting blogs and keeping up-to-date on social media.  For those of you that wondered what happened, I just finished the Master’s in Business Administration program at the University of Nevada – Reno. Completion of the MBA program has given me quite the sense of accomplishment.

The last month of class and finals was very intense and required all my efforts.  Now that I am completely done, I should have more time to blog.

Obtain Your Own Sense of Accomplishment

For leaders to gain their own sense of accomplishment, they must do the right things. One leadership topic that comes up all the time is the importance of setting and accomplishing goals.  Goals are very important because they give us direction in life.  They set us on a path that leads to future accomplishments.  As a part of setting goals, one aspect rarely discussed is what to do upon completion of the particular goal.  After you accomplish a major goal, you may experience a let-down period.  After working hard for a long time, you may wonder what to do with yourself.  Once you complete a goal, there are three things you can do to move forward.

Make the Performance Review a Positive Experience

By Brandon W. Jones on March 23, 2011 0

Each year most employers give their employees an annual performance review. One complaint I have with many leaders is that they save up all they negative feedback for the annual review. This is very inappropriate. The annual performance review should be a time of reflection on the past year, not a gripe session. The annual performance review is a time for leaders to do three things.

Give Constructive Criticism

It is important for leaders to point out strengths of their employees prior to giving any criticism. Once the strengths have been discussed, leaders can identify areas of weakness within their employees. Once the weakness has been discussed, the leader should give the employees suggestions on how to improve and overcome their weakness. If the leader does not give suggestions for improvement, the employee will feel less valued. [Read more…] about Make the Performance Review a Positive Experience

The Difference Between Managers and Leaders

By Brandon W. Jones on March 12, 2011 0

Have you ever wondered what the difference is between leadership and management?  There is a big difference.  “Managers figure out what they want done and get people to do it.  Managers try to get people to do what they did yesterday, but a little faster and a little cheaper with a few less defects.”  That is not leadership.

Leaders do so much more for organizations.  Leaders create a vision that takes the organization in a new direction.  Their vision leads change, improvement, and ultimately success.

How Far Can You Stretch Yourself?

By Brandon W. Jones on March 10, 2011 0

Over the last few weeks I have not been able to blog as frequently.  I am in my final semester of the MBA program at University of Nevada – Reno.  During the last two weeks I have learned more about what it means to stretch yourself. I have had midterms.

Educational Challenges

Life was very hectic as I studied a lot to prepare for the tests.  As I studied I learned a lot from the class material, but what was even more valuable was that my tests forced me to stretch myself.  As I pushed myself, I realized I was able to do more than I thought.

How Far Can You Stretch Yourself?

Stretch Yourself

Every so often it is very good to stretch yourself beyond what you feel you are capable of handling.  As you stretch yourself, you grow in your ability to handle life’s challenges.  You also learn a lot about yourself.  You learn a about patience, perseverance, and dedication.

When you push yourself to your limit, you need to be careful not to do it for too long of periods of time because it will cause burnout.  Once you burn out, you are no longer effective and begin to waste time and effort.

Take The Challenge And Be Great

By Brandon W. Jones on March 4, 2011 0

One of the biggest challenges in life is allowing yourself to be excellent.  There are many opportunities to shine and be great all the time.   It is, however, hard to let yourself be great.  People like to be one in the crowd.  As you begin to be great, you also begin to stand out which can be uncomfortable at times.

Leaders have to be great.  Do not be afraid to be excellent. As you are excellent you allow other to be excellent also.

Leaders, Obtain And Keep The Right People: Part 3 of 3

By Brandon W. Jones on February 28, 2011 2

Once the right people are in place, leaders must do all they can to retain them. Many leaders and companies don’t have a good system in place to retain their employees. This issue is compounded when you throw in the fire happy leaders. It is possible for the fire happy leaders to hire and train good employees then fire them on a whim. A good employee retention system is a key to keep the right people that are qualified and trained employees.

For an employee retention system to succeed, it must discourage leaders from firing people without taking adequate measures to help them succeed. The following are two safeguards that must be in place for the success of employee retention systems:

  1. The fire happy leaders must have disincentives for firing people and incentives for employee retention.
  2. The employees should have performance incentives and retention programs.

Firing Disincentives and Incentives

Ultimately, fire happy leaders cost companies lots of money because each time a trained employee is lost, the company has spend money to train a new employee. With disincentives in place, fire happy leaders will slow down or stop firing people. The fire happy leaders that I am referring to are those that fire based on personality conflicts, differing opinions, etc.

Some ways to disincentivize firing are pay freezes, pay cuts, holds on promotions, or demotions. Although some of these disincentives seem strong, it is very important for leaders to keep the trained employees within the company. The disincentives will encourage leaders to get over their personality conflicts for fear of punishment.

Leaders, Obtain And Keep The Right People: Part 2 of 3

By Brandon W. Jones on February 26, 2011 2

One major problem I have seen with the fire happy leaders is that they don’t properly train their employees. These leaders can’t keep the right people because they don’t give them the proper training from the very beginning and then they expect them to know more than they should. All the employees must be trained on the following:

1. The Company Policies and Procedures

In many of the large corporations that exist, there is a specific set of training sessions that every employee must go through when they are hired. As a part of the training session, HR or some other department reviews all the policies and procedures of the organization. This is very important because this training teaches the employees what they can and can’t do within the organization.

Leaders, Obtain And Keep The Right People: Part 1 of 3

By Brandon W. Jones on February 23, 2011 0

Recently I spoke to a manager friend of mine. He mentioned a major complaint he has with many leaders in the business world. He said that there are far too many “fire happy” managers. They are fire happy because they fail in one of the following three areas:

  1. They don’t hire the right people from the beginning.
  2. They don’t train the right people properly.
  3. They don’t have a good system in place to retain the right people.

Because it all starts with hiring the right people, this post will cover techniques for hiring the right people.

Obtain and Keep the Right People

1. Know your how to do your job.

Leaders need to know their own job really well before they can begin hiring the right people to work for them. They must know the specifics of their job on a daily basis. They must also know what it takes to do a good job in their current position. They must be the expert in their department, so they can answer any questions that people might have of them. Included in being the expert in their department, they must also have a very good idea of what their employees do in their jobs.
