Hello, hello! This week I was out with some friends and we were doing some off-roading in my truck. I stopped for a moment so we could look at some wildlife in the area.

When we decided to go again, I shifted the car and hit the gas. By accident, I shifted to neutral so I wasn’t going anywhere. I casually said to my friends, “Well, I can’t go anywhere without the car in gear. I can’t go back or forward.” To which my friend replied, “There’s a lot of good lessons we can take from that.” So what are some lessons we can learn from that?

There’s a lot of great lessons about progress. I want to focus this episode on what we can do in leadership to avoid being stuck in neutral. In leadership, we can’t be stuck in neutral. Instead, we need to be progressing to move forward!

Leadership Tip of the Week

Create an agenda for your meetings and hold to it. The most ineffective meetings I have ever attended have been the ones where there was no agenda from the start. Everyone showed up to the meeting with different expectations which led to confusion, frustration, and ineffective meetings.

The agenda may seem insignificant or be overlooked, but it is extremely important for the success of the meeting. The agenda acts as a roadmap for the meeting. It provides direction and helps people stay on track.

An agenda should include the following:

  • The date and time of the meeting
  • The title of the meeting
  • The end goals, purpose, and specific objectives of the meeting
  • The meeting facilitator
  • The person in charge of taking meeting minutes.
  • The main points/topics that will be discussed
  • The length of time you will talk about each topic

You have management meetings, planning meetings, training meetings, project meetings, etc. The list goes on… meetings, meetings, meetings… Sometimes they are very effective meetings and other times they are almost a complete waste of time. Your Leadership Agenda

In leadership, every leader has his/her own leadership agenda.  Some start out with the desire to make massive changes in a short time.  Others have the leadership agenda to ease into their new role and not rock the boat.  Knowing and understanding your leadership agenda is very important because it helps you to have a strategy when you approach your leadership.

Survivor and Leadership Agenda

Last night, my wife and I watched the reality show Survivor.  Survivor is a game where around 24 (sometimes more) people that are complete strangers are put into a remote area where they have to survive for 38 days.  During that time, they all live together in a small group or tribe as they call it.

Almost every day they play some type of game where the tribes or individuals compete against each other for either a reward or immunity.  At the immunity competitions, the tribe that loses goes to tribal council where one person gets sent home by their tribe members.

At the end of it all, there are usually two or three people that remain.  Their peers then vote for who they want to be the winner of a $1 million prize.  As we watched tonight, it was very interesting to see how everyone had their own leadership agenda.

They each decided where they wanted and didn’t want the tribe to go.  Some people wanted to be liked, while others wanted immunity at the next tribal council.  At the same time, there were others that just wanted to coast under the radar, so they could make to the end.  They all had their own leadership and personal agenda for how they would make it to the end. How To Make Your Meetings Fail

Have you ever been in a meeting that got way off track? Or, have you sat in a meeting that had an agenda that was not effective? Have you sat in a meeting that was a great meeting where a lot was accomplished but you didn’t even need to be there?  These are all perfect ways to make a meeting fail.  There are three things that will make a meeting fail quicker than anything else.

No Agenda

Don’t prepare an agenda so no one knows what you are supposed to talk about.  When a meeting doesn’t have an agenda, you have set up the meeting to fail.  People will show up having no idea what the purpose of the meeting is.  Without an agenda you will not know how much time to talk about each item.  Ultimately, failure to have an agenda will lead to a failed meeting.  [Read more…] about How To Make Your Meetings Fail
