Every leader goes through trials and challenges at some point in their leadership journey. They come in the form of getting your opportunity to be a leader, making positive change, or getting acceptance of those you lead. There are also many other instances where leadership if difficult and trials come. As we go through each challenge, we grow, learn, progress, and they make us a stronger leader.

3 Great Stories To Make You A Stronger Leader

In this episode, we are going to look at three different stories that help give you strength through the difficulties of leadership to become a stronger leader.

Story #1 — Trees Growing In Nature

In nature, trees that grow up in a windy environment become stronger. As winds whip around young saplings, forces inside the trees do two things. First, they stimulate the roots to grow faster and spread farther. Second, the forces in the tree start creating cell structures that actually make the trunk and branches thicker and more flexible to the pressure of the wind. These stronger roots and branches protect the tree from winds that are sure to return. (This is an excerpt from the speech, Spiritual Whirlwinds, by  Neil L. Andersen.)

Lessons From Trees

I like this because it is the same for leaders. As we go through challenging times, we gain experience that helps us in the future to be a stronger leader. We learn from the difficulties and become better leaders as a result.

Story #2 — Darren Hardy

In the Forbes article, How Speaking Skills Turned A Common Man Into An Uncommon Success, by Carmine Gallo, Carmine shares the following story of Darren Hardy. [Read more…] about Podcast Episode #16: 3 Great Stories To Make You A Stronger Leader

Peter Guber – Your Story Makes The Difference

By Brandon W. Jones on October 17, 2014 0

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to listen to Peter Guber speak at the High Desert Opportunity in Victorville, CA. Peter Guber is an executive, entrepreneur, and a New York Times Best Selling Author. He is the Chairman and CEO of Mandalay Entertainment and a co-owner of two professional sports teams: Golden State Warriors of the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the Los Angeles Dodgers of Major League Baseball (MLB). Peter Guber has an incredible background and a lot of experience. He has been a leader all his life in multiple settings. One of my favorite quotes from him was: [Read more…] about Peter Guber – Your Story Makes The Difference

Fight The Wrong Battles

By Brandon W. Jones on February 24, 2014 0

When change comes around, there are many people that do all they can to fight it. They decide that all change is bad and if they make the next change, their life will be more difficult. These people fight change so much that they get worn down, their stress level increases, and life becomes much more difficult. Additionally, people get tired of being around the change fighter because they know that any change they think of will be hard to implement.

Fight The Wrong Battles

When you fight the wrong battles you will experience fatigue and you could run into the following three challenges:

Loss of Emotional Energy

Everything you do either adds to your emotional reservoir or takes away from it. When you fight a winning battle, your confidence grows and you begin to feel energized. On the other hand, when you fight the wrong battles, you lose emotional energy. If you are consistently fighting the wrong battles, you will drain your reservoir more than you refill it. With time it will get depleted. [Read more…] about Fight The Wrong Battles

Have A Growth Plan In Place

By Brandon W. Jones on March 27, 2013 3

I took a flight from Reno, NV to Poenix, AZ in 2009 where I had the opportunity to sit next to a very smart guy.  I don’t remember his name, so I will just call him Brett.  Brett had a background in economics and was in the economics doctorate program at the University of Nevada – Reno.  As we talked, he brought up a very interesting question.  He said, “So every new business owner is always concerned about what they should do to avoid failure.  They are so concerned that their product remains relevant that they never ask themselves, ‘What will we do if everything goes really well?  How will we keep up with the demand if it is very high? What is my growth plan?'”  From there, we began talking about a variety of things that leaders can do to prepare a growth plan, so that they don’t fail due to the inability to grow.  Overall, the factors we discussed all dealt with having a growth plan in place.Have a Growth Plan in Place

Why have a growth plan

When you start your company, your growth plan will be a guide that you can follow as you expand.  It will explain how you will grow and what you will do as you grow. In your plan, you can identify geographical areas where you plan to expand, new markets you plan to enter, how you plan to expand your capital, plant, and human resources, and what market strategies you plan to use.  Within each industry there are low cost providers, high quality providers, and everything in between.  As you create this plan, write as much detail as you can so you have a clear image of what you plan to do.  [Read more…] about Have A Growth Plan In Place

Learn To Control Life

By Brandon W. Jones on March 2, 2013 3

When you are a leader, everyday brings a multitude of problems, challenges, and opportunities.  Each comes from a variety of sources with different people involved.  As you face the problems, challenges, and opportunities, think about how to control life.  You must realize what is within your control and what is not.  As a leader, it is very easy to want to control life completely to the point that you forget that you can’t control certain things.  When you try to control the uncontrollable it only leads to stress, frustration, burnout, and disappointment.  As a leader, you must truly think about and understand how to control life.

Do you control life or does life control you?

Do You Understand How To Control Life?

So, when do you control life and when does someone else control life?  This question is very important when approaching each day.  You should ask this question when you set your priorities and determine how to spend your time and money.  It is very easy to get caught up trying to control things outside your control, but that creates unneeded stress.

When deciding how to control life, you must grasp the controlled and let go of the uncontrollable.  How can you grasp the controlled?  How can you let go of the uncontrollable?  To control life you must understand what is controllable and what is not. [Read more…] about Learn To Control Life
