In this episode, I am going to talk about why it is important to prioritize effectively. But first, I want to share a little story with you.

Life Throws Us Curveballs

I have noticed that through my life there’s been times where it was really easy to be intentional and focused. During those times, I got a lot done in both my professional and personal life.

There’s other times when life gets so busy with other people planning or heavily influencing my life that it feels like you are swimming an uphill current. During those times, I feel like I’m doing everything I can to stay afloat with a heavy current of events and activities pushing and pulling me in several different directions.

Oner the last few months, I’ve been doing a little bit of both. I traveled a little over three weeks on business, went on two family road trips, did a complete overhaul on my house and was involved in several other high profile activities for my employer.

I have felt like I was making slow progress while fighting a strong current. I must say though, through it all I feel I have been making progress. The reason? I have prioritized my activities into three buckets. Now let me explain the three buckets to effectively prioritize. Prioritize Effectively Using This Proven Strategy!

Hi, and welcome to the Leadership Done Right YouTube channel. In life it’s important to prioritize effectively. Everyone makes many choices on a regular basis. Those choices impact every aspect of life including family, work, religious activities, education, etc. Each choice on its own may seem insignificant, but together they lead to the type of person you are as a whole.

When making choices it is very important to prioritize effectively so you make the most effective use of your time. A little while back I heard a speech given by Dallin H. Oaks. He spoke about how to prioritize effectively and make correct choices. His emphasis was to categorize your choices as good, better, and best choices.

Prioritize Effectively

Let’s dig a little deeper to learn how to prioritize effectively. Think about what activities, tasks, responsibilities, etc. are most important to you and deserve your time. So how do you decide what is “important?” In line with Dallin H. Oaks’s speech, I categorize each activity and decision as the good, better, or best decision.

What is a Good Decision?

There are many good things that one can their spend time on. A first step to prioritize effectively is to identify what is even worth your time.

Dallin H. Oaks said:

“We should begin by recognizing the reality that just because something is good is not a sufficient reason for doing it. The number of good things we can do far exceeds the time available to accomplish them.”

There are so many good things we can do with our time. When I prioritize, I ask if this is something I want to spend time on someday in the future. If the answer is yes but it does nothing to advance my goals now or anytime in the near future it is just a “good” thing that can wait until someday in the future. Today is just not that day and right now is not a good time.” [Read more…] about Prioritize Effectively Using This Proven Strategy!

The Winning Strategy To Make The Right Choice

By Brandon W. Jones on February 10, 2014 0

This is a guest post by Melisa Marsett. She is a young, though talented writer. Melisa mainly works on such topics as leadership, psychology, and business. Her works can also be found at http://cleverpaperwritingservices.com/.  It is easy to get more information about this author at Google+

How many decisions do we make during the day? Ten? Twenty? One hundred? We make decisions every minute. No matter how usual and standard our actions seem to be, all of them are the products of our choice. The only difference is that most of our solutions are spontaneous and random. Nonrandom connected with intellectual efforts are taken not that often.

The Winner's strategy to Make the Right ChoiceIn business, just as in life, we constantly have to make decisions, and in most cases this necessity is quite unexpected. What helps us in these situations? How to make the right choice? How to find the right way? A wise man says that when you do not know which decision to take, flip a nickel and see what you get. If you are satisfied with the result, then so be it. If you feel doubts, choose another option.

We have to admit that ready-made recipes for all occasions do not exist, and each person has the freedom to choose. But it is unlikely that you will put mineral oil into the engine of an expensive car. It is doubtful that you put on your favorite track suit to go to a business dinner or social events. There are certain principles and rules based on knowledge, which are shared by most people. At the same time, everyone has the freedom of choice – what kind of oil to use or what to wear. Thus, your real choice is based on the actual situation, capabilities, preferences and, of course, common sense.

And how do we make difficult decisions? Do we take into account all possible options? Do we listen to our inner voice? Do we consider rational factors, or rely on intuition? [Read more…] about The Winning Strategy To Make The Right Choice

Label Yourself And See What Happens

By Brandon W. Jones on May 20, 2013 2

How do you label yourself?  Are you too fat or too skinny?  Are you the workaholic or the one that skates by with little effort?  When you label yourself, it has a powerful effect on how you see yourself and the decisions you make.Learn What Happens When You Label Yourself

How do you label yourself?

In the article, How Do You Label Yourself on drphil.com, Dr. Phil said, “Believe it or not, labels are incredibly powerful influences in your life. You may not be consciously aware of even a fraction of the names assigned to you, whether they come from the outside world or from within.”

In leadership, many people will label you.  Some will label you as “the great leader.”  And others will label you as a bad leader.  There are also many other labels people will give you; too confident, smart, arrogant, etc. [Read more…] about Label Yourself And See What Happens

Take Control Of Your Life

By Brandon W. Jones on April 10, 2013 2

When you want to take control of your life, you must make your own choices.  Those who take control are willing to own their choices.  They know that each time they take control of their choices, they will learn something new whether it is good or bad.  When you don’t take control of your life, you push your choices onto others and then blame them for the outcome when it is bad.  If, however, the outcome is good, they are the ones that are quick to take all the credit for a good decision.

Take Control Of Your Life

What happens when you take control?

I have another friend that has gone through a lot of hardships.  He has lost his job multiple times due to layoffs, been rejected in relationships, and not been able to find a good job that met his qualifications. He has even struggled to make ends meet.  Overall, he has many reasons to complain.  He could blame his situation on everyone else for their behavior and what they have done to him, but he has a different approach.  He is always positive and regularly looks inward to figure out what he needs to do differently.  He constantly seeks opportunities to do more and be better.  He has the attitude that he will not let himself settle for what he thinks he can earn by taking control of his life.  With this attitude, he is gradually finding success, but it has come as a result of his hard work and dedication.  He has taken control of his life.

What happens when you don’t take control?

I have a friend that is a chronic complainer.  He has been blessed with many material possessions compared to most, but every chance he gets he complains about someone or something. “That person isn’t nice enough.”  “I am underprivileged because I don’t have the nicest new thing.”  “It’s not fair that I ONLY have this and everyone else has that, especially with the amount of work I put in.  It’s not fair!”  “It’s not my fault that this is happening to me, it is the boss’s fault.”  “I would be more successful if that person didn’t put that road block in my way.”  The list of his comments and negativity goes on and on.  He never takes any of the blame for his situation because it is always the fault of something or someone else.  He did not take control of his life because he has given his control to others. The Power Of Choices

By Brandon W. Jones on March 12, 2013 2

Do you understand the power of choices?  Everyday brings new choices and challenges.  You have to choose what to eat, what to wear, how to spend your time, what projects to work on, where you spend your money, who you spend your time with, etc.  We have to make many choices everyday.  Some of the choices are hard and others are easy.  As a leader, it is important to make good choices.  In this post I will share three important aspects of choices for you to consider to help you understand the power of choices.

[youtube=http://youtu.be/fZxset8fMrY]

Your power of choices as the leader

The power of choices is very evident as a leader.  You make choices all the time that almost always effect someone else.  Many times your choices have a major impact on those you lead.  In addition, the choices you make, as a leader, directly effect the behavior of your followers.  You set the example.  As you make good choices, there is a good chance those you lead will follow suit and make good choices as well.  At the same time, when you make bad choices you send a message to your followers that bad choices are okay.  (Have you seen the companies in the news with multiple people making bad choices?)

Do you understand the power of choices?

Ultimately, you have the power of choices and with that, you can choose between three types of choices.

  1. Good Choices.  There are many choices that are good.  Many of the good choices will help you move in the right direction in your life.  They allow you to do good things that will help yourself  and others.
  2. Better Choices.  However, even though there are many good choices, there are also better choices.  The better choices come in disguise because they are a little harder to see right off the bat.  The better choices help you reach your goals a little faster than the good choices.  They help you to move in a right direction but at a quicker pace than the good choices.
  3. Best Choices.  In addition to the good and better choices, there are also the best choices.  The best choices help you reach your goals the quickest.  They can be looked at as the top level choices.  As leaders, you should always seek the best choices.
