When it comes to ethics, everyone has their own definition of what is ethical and what is not. For many people, what it means to be ethical is very clearly defined in their mind. However, there are many people that have no clear definition of what it means to be an ethical leader.

Confusion About The Ethical Leader

The characteristics of an ethical leader that seem completely clear to one person, can make no sense to others. What is completely ethical to one leader may be completely wrong to another leader. What is your ethical evaluation criteria? How do you determine if your behavior is ethical or not?

Do You Take Your Leadership Fiduciary Responsibility Seriously?

Over the past five to ten years there have been many leaders that have squandered money from others in some fashion.  Sometimes those other people are investors, employees, stockholders, or stakeholders of some form or another.  Many times the leaders are entrusted with large sums of money, but they are careless when making decisions.  Other times, leaders just make risky investments without doing adequate research.  So why do leaders make these types of decisions?  There are probably many reasons, but they all stem from the fact that they don’t understand their fiduciary responsibility.Do You Take Your Leadership Fiduciary Responsibility Seriously?

What is a fiduciary responsibility?

Wikipedia explains, “A fiduciary (from Latin fiduciarius, meaning “(holding) in trust”; from fides, meaning “faith”, and fiducia, meaning “trust”) is a legal or ethical relationship of trust between two or more parties.  Typically, a fiduciary prudently takes care of money for another person.  One party, for example a corporate trust company or the trust department of a bank, acts in a fiduciary capacity to the other one, who for example has funds entrusted to it for investment.”  As a leader, you have a fiduciary responsibility to those who have entrusted you with their money. What You Should Be Dedicated To As A Leader

In leadership, there are many things competing for your time.  As a leader, it is a challenge to effectively identify what is worth your time and what is not.  It is important to give your full effort to the things you decide to do.  It is better to be dedicated to a few things to be able to give your full effort, than to not be dedicated and give a mediocre effort to many things.

The more dedicated you are to something, the more time you will devote to it. Although you can’t always decide where you spend your time due to various responsibilities, it is important to know when to delegate and when do it yourself. By effectively delegating, you give yourself more time to be dedicated to what is most important to you.

So what does it mean to be dedicated? Dictionary.com defines the word dedicate as, “to devote wholly and earnestly, as to some person or purpose.” So what should you be dedicated to? As a leader, it is important spend your time doing the most important things. I have seen many leaders that have said that they were dedicated to one thing or another, yet they spend very little time on it. Are they really dedicated to it? I would say that they are not. Ethics in the Workplace

Within the business world each person has to continuously make choices related to ethics. It is an everyday part of life. In many fields ranging from the practice of law to engineering services there are codes of ethics to which people must adhere.

Code of Ethics – The License

In order to receive the professional license in a given field, individuals must sign the code stating they are willing to abide by its ethical standards. As part of the codes, they state how people should and should not behave on matters of ethics. They also state in many cases that a failure to adhere to the code will result in the revocation of the license.

Ethics in the Workplace

As important as ethics are, there is no business code of ethics that must be signed in order to enter management. In order to be a manager, one does not have to sign a paper stating they will follow specific standards for the rest of their career.

A Missing Code

There is not a code of ethics for managers that must be signed prior to entering the management arena. Although most corporations have their own set of company policies and procedures, there is not a set standard through the business world. [Read more…] about Ethics in the Workplace

For Lt. Withers, Act of Mercy Has Unexpected Sequel

The article “For Lt. Withers, Act of Mercy Has Unexpected Sequel” is an amazing article. It was about an army lieutenant that made an impact during World War II. As an African American Army Lt., John Withers was a by the book leader that did everything by the rules. When he was in the army, there was strong segregation. Because of the segregation, the African Americans were watched very closely. John Withers was very diligent in doing everything right.

Act of Mercy Has Unexpected Sequel

When two prisoners were released from one of the concentration camps, he made the decision to go against protocol and serve them. There are some important lessons that can be learned from Lt. John Withers.

  1. Stick to your values at all costs.
  2. Teach those you lead by your actions as well as words
  3. Learn from the past

Lt. Withers knew the rules for the army and he did everything he could to follow them. He did not, however, compromise his values when it came to the rules. When first approached about harboring refugees, he was not going to allow it so he would be upholding the rules, but when he saw the condition of the refugees, he decided to help them. To him it was more important to save a life than follow the rules, so that is what he did.

Lt Withers constantly led his soldiers by his example. He also led his family and children by example. Because his example was so powerful, he was able to teach by words as well. His words were able to change those he came in contact with.

Lt Withers was able to take the lessons from his WWII experiences and teach his children. He learned from the past and constantly worked to share those lessons with his children so that they too could learn.
