Top 10 Causes of Leadership Failure

Alright, leaders and businesses fail due to a number of reasons, but there are some common contributing factors. Today, I am going to share the Top 10 Causes of Leadership Failure that I gathered from fellow leaders, friends, credible leadership websites, and my own experiences.

10. Talk More Than Listen

At number 10, leadership fails when leaders talk more than they listen. Have you ever been around someone that talked and talked and talked some more? That person seems to have a story for every situation, experience, or background that is discussed, AND they tell everyone what they know and how they feel about everything.

At first this starts out as a small annoyance, but it can eventually become a big frustration. When leaders talk more than they listen, their followers often disconnect from them and become less responsive to their recommendations.

Additionally, when leaders don’t listen to others, they fail to learn what they don’t know. This creates blinds spots because they can’t learn what they don’t know.

9. Have All the Answers or They are a Know-It-All

Number nine, leaders fail when they have all the answers and are a know-it-all. Nobody wants to be around people that think they know everything. Know-it-alls seem to have an answer for everything and they are always right, even if they are not right. That know-it-all mentality is very annoying and even a put-off to those they lead.

I remember someone like that when I was in high school. I would tell him about everything I could think of that he shouldn’t know about, and he magically knew more than me about it. Top 5 Challenges New Leaders Face in the Corporate World

Alright, so let’s talk about challenges new leaders face in the corporate world. Before we get into the five challenges, I want to explain how I arrived at these five challenges. I got these challenges from the feedback I have received from listeners like you, a variety of searches on Google and from my own leadership experiences. As I put the list together, I found there were many points and angles but the majority fell into these five categories.

1. The Expectation to Know and Be Everything

The first big challenge new leaders face is the internal expectation to know and be everything. I say internal because it often isn’t an expectation set by others, but rather an expectation that we have for ourselves. That got me thinking about where that expectation comes from… I think we add that pressure on our selves because we want to prove ourselves, make our mark, and be the leader we always wished we had. What’s Your Definition of Success?

Hi, and welcome to the Leadership Done Right YouTube channel. One of the main goals of every leader is to be successful. Success comes in many forms.

Completing a big project, helping an employee improve, hitting a budget target, meeting customer needs, or implementing a new procedure within the given parameters are all forms of success. There are also many other forms and definitions of success depending on your situation.

What Is The Definition of Success?

One important aspect of success is that success is in the eye of the beholder. What one person sees as failure may be a complete success for someone else. Likewise, the opposite may be true as well.

What is Your Definition of Success?

I’ve seen many cases where one person is successful in a specific way and that  causes the next person to feel they have to have the same success in the same way to be as successful. Don’t trap yourself with this mindset. Your skills and abilities are different and unique to you. And, your situation is often different and unique as well. Therefore, you should not determine your success based on the successes of others. Since each situation is unique, Success is unique to each situation and circumstance.

Success Starts with Expectations

Success is dependent on expectations. When you reach your expectations you feel successful, but when you don’t, you feel disappointment.

So let’s consider expectations. Expectations must be set correctly. Sometimes we set our own expectations and sometimes others set them for us. Regardless of who sets them, to be successful they must be based on YOUR abilities, not the abilities of others. When expectations are set by others, do everything you can to manage those expectations so they are accurate.

It All Relates to Goals

Success and expectations all relate to goals. Our goals are created because we have specific desired outcomes, or expectations. If we reach that outcome we feel we are successful, but if we don’t, we feel we are unsuccessful. [Read more…] about What’s Your Definition of Success?

4 Keys To Communicate Effectively

Over the years, I’ve had some leaders that communicated effectively and others that communicated very poorly. The effective communicators were very easy to work with because they kept an open communication. The ineffective communicators, however, were very difficult to work with because they had unclear expectations, did not effectively share their thoughts, and constantly had breakdowns in communication.

Four Keys To Communicate Effectively

So what does it take to be an effective communicator? What are some strategies you can use to effectively communicate with those you lead? You can do the four actions outlined below to effectively communicate with others.

1. Lead By Example

As a leader, you set the example for others to follow. This is very important when it comes to communication. You can set the example of good communication by regularly talking to those you lead.

Talk to them about work related topics in an open and transparent way so they know you are being honest with them. Also, do your best to listen when you communicate with others. To confirm that you are listening, repeat back what they are telling you in your own words and with empathy. 4 Questions To Ask When Setting Expectations

Several years ago, I worked for a consulting engineering firm.  My boss was the president of the company.  When I worked for him, I had the privilege of going on field rides with him to review some of our project locations.  During our discussions while driving, he taught me a very valuable lesson about the importance of setting  expectations.  He explained that as the leader of the company, his main priority was to keep the customers happy.  To do that, he explained that you must be good at setting expectations.  You cannot be afraid to ask follow-up questions to identify the customers’ needs and wants.  He taught me that when setting expectations, it was far more important to ask questions during the design process to make the right product.  If you don’t ask questions, you run the risk of completely missing the target.  Through this approach, we identified and set the customers’ expectations to create products they really wanted.

As a leader, it is very important to understand the value of setting expectations.  The following four questions should be asked when you begin setting expectations for yourself and for others.

Set Clear Expectations As A Leader

A little while back, I spoke to my friend Jason. Jason was a mid-level manager at the company where he worked, but he was still responsible for creating the vision and setting clear expectations. In his position, he was a leader in every sense of the word and faced all the regular leadership challenges.

The result of clear expectations

One particular challenge that Jason faced came from the inability of others to set clear expectations. As a mid-level manager, Jason reported to leaders within his organization. They regularly gave him big projects to work on that helped move the company towards some of the overall corporate goals. At the time I spoke to him, he had received a number of projects from his superiors. His frustration at the time was that they had not given him clear clear expectations.

The importance of clear expectations

As Jason began working on the projects, he asked for additional clarification on what he should do. They clarified to the point where Jason felt he had clear expectations, so he began working towards the completion of the projects. In many cases, Jason’s vision for the projects was greater than the vision of his superiors.  He worked very hard on each project to get the projects done. Once he was done, he presented his work to his superiors for approval. They would inevitably say he had done a great job, but he needed to add some things here or change some things there.
