What Would You Do As A New CEO?

By Brandon W. Jones on September 10, 2012 2

Over the last few months, I’ve followed Yahoo’s CEO situation. In January, Yahoo hired Scott Thompson. While he was the CEO, he made major spending cuts and laid of many people as an attempt to bring the company back from financial woes. His approach demotivated the company and created tension between him and the employees. It didn’t take long for his approach to get noticed by the board of directors. In May, Scott was terminated as the CEO as a result of his leadership style and some integrity issues that were brought to light.

What Would You Do As A New CEO?

Following Scott Thompson’s firing, Ross Levinsohn took over as the interim CEO. Ross Levinsohn continued some of the initiatives that Scott Thompson started. Since he was only the interim CEO, he was replaced by Marissa Mayer in the end of July. [Read more…] about What Would You Do As A New CEO?

Leaders, Know Your People

By Brandon W. Jones on March 6, 2012 2

Do you walk in every morning and go straight to your office? Once you get to your office, do you focus on responding to all your emails? Then you run from one meeting to the next and before you know it your day is over. Does this happen day after day, month after month? While you were in this routine, did you talk to your employees? Did you ask them how they were doing?

Leaders, Know Your People

There are two prominent types of leaders: the work focused leader and the employee focused leader.

Work Focused Leaders

The work focused leaders stay to themselves and only do their job. They don’t make time for their employees because their work is “FAR MORE IMPORTANT”, or so they think. They are full of reasons/excuses as to why they can’t help their employees. They are great at deflecting their people’s concerns.

These types of leaders focus solely on their projects and success. They are also quick to anger when others ask them questions they don’t like. I am sure you know the type of leader I am talking about.

Keeping Perspective As Leaders

By Brandon W. Jones on February 9, 2011 3

As a leader, it is very important that you are keeping perspective.  When we stop keeping perspective, we are bound to fail.  The following are three ways to keep everything in perspective.

Learn from the past

It is essential that we look to those who have gone before us and review both their successes and failures.  We must also take time to review what we have done in our own lives and the outcomes. [Read more…] about Keeping Perspective As Leaders

Poor Leadership, Part 1 of 2

By Brandon W. Jones on January 9, 2011 5

Poor Leadership - Part 1 of 2

I recently talked to my brother-in-law, Dan, and he relayed a very interesting story to me relating to poor leadership. Sometime ago he worked for a very well-known company. While working there, he had an experience that really stunted his career progress for quite some time.

Poor Leadership - Part 1 of 2

The Start of Poor Leadership

The story started when he got a new supervisor. The new supervisor had been with the company about the same amount of time as Dan. Dan and the new supervisor both interviewed for the supervisor position, but the new supervisor, John, received the position instead of Dan. Prior to the supervisor transition, Dan was ready for a promotion with his previous supervisor. Dan was very concerned that with the transition, he would not receive the promotion very quickly.

In order to help John transition into his new position, Dan offered his help in any way possible. Dan also did all he could to show his leadership abilities by taking on several new responsibilities that were above and beyond his current job description.
