The Power of Blogging in Leadership!

By Brandon W. Jones on February 19, 2012 0

To be a good leader, you must have conviction in what you want to do and the stance you take on different issues. In many cases, beginning leaders don’t have strong convictions because they are new to leadership.  Those convictions develop over time through trial and error, or as they study examples from other leaders.

Blogging In Leadership

Writing down your thoughts can also be very beneficial in the development of your convictions. A blog is a perfect platform for this. The following video helps explain the power of blogging in leadership when developing your convictions.

Clarity of Thought

As you blog, you will develop your own thoughts on how to handle different situations. Blogging will force you to take a stance on the topics you write about. As Seth Godin and Tom Peters stated, blogging will refine your thoughts and help you in many ways.  [Read more…] about The Power of Blogging in Leadership!

Three Rules From Bringing Out the Best in People

By Brandon W. Jones on February 8, 2011 0

The book Bringing Out the Best in People is a very powerful book for leaders in the business world today. It explains twelve different techniques one can use to develop himself/herself into a great leader. Of the twelve rules, the three that stood out the most were the following: Rule #1 – Expect the best from the people you lead; Rule #3 – Establish high standards of excellence; Rule #7, Recognize and applaud achievements.

Rule #1: Expect The Best From The People You Lead

This rule is especially important in developing a strong company or working environment. When a leader expects the best from his/her subordinates, they begin to expect the best from themselves. As the book states, leaders should not manipulate their employees to obligate them to do their best. Leaders should recognize employee’s abilities and needs and help motivate them.

When I wrestled in high school, my coach always expected the very best of my teammates and me. This motivated me to exercise and push myself to the limit of my physical capacity in order to do my best. Expecting the best from people establishes high standards of excellence, and when done properly, develops a great bond of trust between the leader and subordinate. The Least Appreciated Key To Success

By Brandon W. Jones on January 15, 2011 0

Ever since I was young, I have asked many people, “What is the key to success?” Some of the responses have been hard work, ethics, integrity, persistence, etc. When I was in college, I realized another key to success that seemed to be hidden in the many responses I received.  That key was feedback. The Least Appreciated Key To Success

Feedback

How do you know you are doing a good job?  Feedback.  How do you know when you are doing a bad job?  Feedback.  How do you know if you are in danger?  Feedback.  You get the picture.  Feedback is the key to growth in life.  Although feedback can be hard to receive at times, it is essential to bettering ourselves and improving as leaders. New Wine, Old Bottles

New Wine Old Bottles - Stephen Covey

In the article “New Wine, Old Bottles”, Stephen R. Covey described three steps that must be taken for a leader to go from an authoritarian leader to a servant leader. First I will show the three steps and then I will explain my feelings about each step.New Wine Old Bottles - Stephen Covey

The three steps are:

  1. Build a new relationship – go from a vertical relationship to a horizontal one.
  2. Create a new psychological contract or performance agreement – be upfront with all expectations especially in the five areas mentioned.
  3. With the transfer of power and responsibility for results, the leader becomes the servant and a source of help.

In the article, Covey presented the different steps, but he didn’t give specific techniques for applying the steps. I will attempt to explain how to apply the three principles.

Step 1: Build a new relationship

This is a very valuable leadership technique. In the article, Covey presented the idea of going from a vertical to a horizontal relationship. I would like to suggest a few ways of applying this technique. First, it is very important to explain to the employees the roles of the leader as more of a guide and less of a judge. In explaining this role, it is essential to explain that there are certain consequences for specific behaviors. [Read more…] about New Wine, Old Bottles
