Wake Up And Be A Leader!

If you follow this blog, you have probably noticed that I regularly write posts about leaders in the news and the impact they have on the world.  Leadership is an important responsibility because leaders determine where people end up and how their lives change. 

Today, I was going to post an article about leaders in the news. As I looked through articles to find one to write about, I was sorely disappointed in the number of articles I came across where the leader overspent, was dishonest, took the organization in the wrong direction, took too many risks, or did something else to ruin the organization.

In many ways I feel like I am probably preaching to the choir when I say this, but leaders everywhere need to wake up and BE leaders.  Leaders need to stop being deceitful and do all they can to stop others from being deceitful.

Be Honest

As a leader, you must be honest.  I wrote another post that focused solely on the importance of being honest, but I feel like I can’t say enough about the importance of being honest.  Leaders have been in the news so much lately because they have been dishonest.  It completely disgusts me that leaders are more concerned with making a few bucks than maintaining their honesty and integrity.  Your honesty and integrity should be worth more to you than anything else.  Once you give up your integrity, you lose your good name.  Is money worth the loss of integrity?  If you think it is, you are a fool. Dishonesty: The Fall Of A Leader

A few weeks ago I wrote a post about the CEO of Yahoo, Scott Thompson.  He was in the news because he had only been with Yahoo for a short time and already was making major layoffs.  Well, once again he has gotten himself into the spotlight.  This time it is for his dishonesty.

How To Lose The Trust Of Those You Lead

Honesty gives you strength.  When you are honest you have complete knowledge that everything you said was the truth.  You can have a clear mind and feel confident that nothing you said or did will come back to haunt you.

When you are honest in every way, you are able to enjoy peace of mind and maintain self-respect.  You build strength of character, which allows you to be of service to others.  You are trustworthy in the eyes of those around you. ~Unknown Author

On the other hand, if you are dishonest in your words or actions, you will hurt yourself or those around you.  You will lose the trust of your closest associates, and that trust will be hard if not impossible to regain.

Some forms of dishonesty include lying, cheating, and stealing.  Three major consequences that come as a result of dishonesty are:

1.  Loss of Self-worth

When you are dishonest, you will feel a loss in your sense of self-worth.  When you are dishonest, you are telling yourself and the world that you are not good enough to do things the honest way.  With each choice you make, you know what is honest and what is not.  When you make dishonest choices, you are hurting yourself as well as others.  Because you know yourself, you know the truth about everything you say and do.  With each time you say something that is not true, you begin to lose your feelings of self-worth. Poor Leadership, Part 2 of 2

I asked a few questions at the close of Poor Leadership, Part 1 of 2, so in this post I will answer the questions and tell you how I would respond.

As a leader, how would you have handled this situation?

I always try to be very upfront and honest in all that I do.  With that being said, the approach I would take would be very different than that of John.  When I have people come to me for help, whether it is an employee, coworker, or customer, the first question I ask is, “What is your timeline for this request?”  From there, I work with them so we are on the same timeline.

Poor Leadership - Part 2 of 2

Although this request is somewhat different than a standard request, I would take a very similar approach.  I would set out a specific timeline with the employee detailing how and when I would get the information on the requirements for the promotion and then help them obtain the promotion.  I would then schedule out blocks of time to work on obtaining information on the qualifications for the promotion.

If the promotion information was easy to obtain, I would then try to figure out what paperwork needed to be completed for the promotion.  I would be sure to regularly update the employee on the progress I was making on the timeline.  That would be especially important if there were roadblocks in meeting the specific deadlines.

The article “Good Leadership Requires Executives to Put Themselves Last” shows what leaders of today must do. In today’s world, there are so many people out there willing to deceive others to make a quick dollar. This is especially sad because in the past the motto of society that a man’s word was his bond. Now it is getting to where a person’s word means almost nothing. In order to be a good leader it is essential that the leader is honest and forthright.

In this article, Michael Leven understood the importance of honesty. The other leaders he associated with did not understand the importance or value of their word. Michael Leven realized that in order to be a good leader he had to put the shareholders first. He even lost his own money by putting the shareholders first. His example was a good example to follow because he put others first.

True and Good Leadership

In a leadership role it is very important to put others first. It is also very important to be a servant leader. Leaders are not better than the followers; they are just at a different spot on the same journey. The leaders should have the attitude that they are there to help others to succeed. The leader is successful when their followers are successful. With this approach, the leaders are there to serve there followers. By serving others, they must put themselves last to be successful.
