A little while back I went to a leadership training meeting for new leaders. My role was to support the new leaders I oversaw. As part of the training, they discussed many topics related to effective leadership. One of the speakers mentioned five leadership principles for beginning leaders that really stuck out to me.

5 Leadership Principles For Beginning Leaders

As people implement each of the five leadership principles, they will improve their leadership capabilities and become better leaders.

1. Determine Needs

Before much progress can be made, leaders must determine the needs of their target audience. The needs fall into one of three categories. They include the needs of the:

  1. Customers
  2. Employees
  3. Organization

To determine these needs, ask and/or observe members of each group specifically. By asking what the needs are, you get direct feedback. When you cannot ask what the needs are or they are not explicitly stated, be observant to recognize the unstated needs. Be Strategic in Your Posts

Over the last two years I have gone back and forth on how I wrote posts for Leadership Done Right. Sometimes I have been really strategic, while other times I just posted whatever was on my mind. Through this process I have learned some valuable lessons. One lesson I learned is that it is very important to be strategic in your posts.

Why should you be strategic?

1. So your audience knows what to expect. When you are strategic, you choose specific themes and let your audience know when and why you will talk about them. They should also know what you will post about and how it will help them. It also lets them know when to expect a new post. This helps your audience stay in tune with what you will talk about.

2. To create value for your audience. People are not going to come to your website unless they learn something, gain a new insight, or receive some other value. Be The Organized Leader

Have you ever seen an office like the one below? How did it make you feel? Are you living in a situation where you are disorganized? It is very important to be an organized leader.  I have visited offices like the one above, but fortunately I have never let my own get quite so bad. When I walked out of offices like that, I felt like I needed to get some fresh air so I could breathe clearly again. When you are not an organized leader, it is easy to feel overwhelmed and lose focus. Sooner or later that leads to less productivity.

The Organized Leader

Recently, I began to feel like I was no longer an organized leader.  My office was becoming unorganized. I had too many stacks of papers on my desk and emails in my inbox. I felt like I was drowning. On Friday of that week, I decided to organize my desk and my emails. I set up folders for each project and got them arranged so I knew exactly where everything was. From there I went through my emails and identified which ones needed responses and which ones I could file. Once everything was filed, I made a list of all my priorities and their time line for completion. Being an organized leader helped me feel like I could breathe more clearly again.

In order to be a good leader it is very important to be organized. As a leader, this can also be quite a challenge because in most cases leaders have many responsibilities that they must constantly balance to be effective in what they do. It can be very easy to become very organized in your approach to one responsibility, while letting others gradually get less organized.

The five B’s of organization will help you as a leader to focus your energy so that you can stay organized and maintain balance in your life.

1.  Be organized In your communication.

As a leader, you must communicate with others regularly. That communication is done in many forms, e.g. public speaking, email, letters, meetings, etc. To be organized in your communication means that you have a consistent message that goes out to everyone. To be organized, you are also direct in the message that you convey.

Have you ever worked for someone that would tell you one thing in front of your coworkers and then something different in front of your boss or other departments? Isn’t that frustrating? A leader that is organized in their communication, maintains their integrity by keeping the same message on all fronts. Overcoming The Leadership Blogging Challenges – Part 2

The other day I did a post called Overcoming The Leadership Blogging Challenges.  The post was based on the question:

Brandon, I liked the article. However, I’d like to know how you overcame the difficulty to be a consistent blogger. Hearing your personal experience relative to the topic is like a breath of fresh air and sets your blogs apart from the rest. What problems did you face when starting out this webpage/blog? Did you have to do a little self “reprogramming” to be consistent? Were there any tools you used that helped? Thanks.

In my previous response, I only addressed the challenges of being a consistent blogger.

When I started out my blog I faced many challenges.  Before I started writing posts on my blog, I decided I would set up a framework.  This helped me to know exactly what I should do to be successful.  There were three areas that I set up my framework.  They were the following:

1. A framework for my post material.

From the very beginning I decided I would focus on leadership.  That focus would be divided into five topics: leadership in the news, leadership theory, great leadership blog posts from other bloggers (Top 5 Weekly Leadership Blog Posts), and weekly wrap up of Leadership Done Right posts.  Each of the topics would allow me to address a different aspect of leadership. What Would You Do As The Boss?

I read an article in the Wall Street Journal yesterday titled, “Where’s the Boss? Trapped in a Meeting” by Rachel Emma Silverman. The article talked about a study that was done on CEOs. London School of Economics and Harvard Business School did a study of over 500 CEOs from various companies around the world.

What Would You Do As The Boss?

The studies were done to see how they used their time. The results were tracked by the CEOs’ personal assistants for anything the CEO did for more than 15 minutes during the day. Some of the results were very interesting. The average tracked CEO worked 55 hours a week and spent 18 hours in meetings.
