Hi friends! Today I have a great episode with one of my great friends. We go way back. Bert and I talked about several great topics. We discussed his transition from a supervisor to a manager, making tough leadership decisions, how to show employees that you appreciate them, the simplicity of leadership and a variety of other topics. I learned a lot through our discussion so I hope you enjoy it! So, without further ado, here is the interview!

Get to Know Bert

Today we have a very special guest. Our guest began his career at UPS in 2006 as a package handler in Reno, Nevada, but he was very driven to become a leader. Since then he has held positions as Human Resources Supervisor, Area HR Manager, District HR Operations Manager, and is now the UPS Information Technology HR Director.

His positions have taken him from Reno, NV to Oakland, CA and he now works in Mahwah, NJ.

Our guest has experience in all aspects of HR, including Workforce Planning, Employee Relations, Performance Management, Career Development, Succession Planning, Employee Services, Compensation and Benefits and Labor Relations.

He holds a bachelor’s in Business Management and a master’s in Business Administration, both from the University of Nevada-Reno.

I have been friends with our guest for several years. We took several classes together in the MBA program and graduated in 2011. Our guest today is Bert Somsin. Bert, welcome to the show!

Leadership from an Early Start

Bert first became a leader working with his mom at their family owned restaurant. He owned an operated a restaurant from age 18 to 23. That helped him understand what leadership was all about from a very early age.

One of the key lessons he learned was that people often don’t judge you first as a manager or leader. Rather, they judge you as a person. They look at who you are and your principles and character. Once people have judged you on that, they’ll give you the opportunity to be a manager and leader. It’s not the other way around.

In this episode, I am going to talk about why it is important to prioritize effectively. But first, I want to share a little story with you.

Life Throws Us Curveballs

I have noticed that through my life there’s been times where it was really easy to be intentional and focused. During those times, I got a lot done in both my professional and personal life.

There’s other times when life gets so busy with other people planning or heavily influencing my life that it feels like you are swimming an uphill current. During those times, I feel like I’m doing everything I can to stay afloat with a heavy current of events and activities pushing and pulling me in several different directions.

Oner the last few months, I’ve been doing a little bit of both. I traveled a little over three weeks on business, went on two family road trips, did a complete overhaul on my house and was involved in several other high profile activities for my employer.

I have felt like I was making slow progress while fighting a strong current. I must say though, through it all I feel I have been making progress. The reason? Top 10 Causes of Leadership Failure

Alright, leaders and businesses fail due to a number of reasons, but there are some common contributing factors. Today, I am going to share the Top 10 Causes of Leadership Failure that I gathered from fellow leaders, friends, credible leadership websites, and my own experiences.

10. Talk More Than Listen

At number 10, leadership fails when leaders talk more than they listen. Have you ever been around someone that talked and talked and talked some more? That person seems to have a story for every situation, experience, or background that is discussed, AND they tell everyone what they know and how they feel about everything.

At first this starts out as a small annoyance, but it can eventually become a big frustration. When leaders talk more than they listen, their followers often disconnect from them and become less responsive to their recommendations.

Additionally, when leaders don’t listen to others, they fail to learn what they don’t know. This creates blinds spots because they can’t learn what they don’t know.

9. Have All the Answers or They are a Know-It-All

Number nine, leaders fail when they have all the answers and are a know-it-all. Nobody wants to be around people that think they know everything. Know-it-alls seem to have an answer for everything and they are always right, even if they are not right. That know-it-all mentality is very annoying and even a put-off to those they lead.

I remember someone like that when I was in high school. I would tell him about everything I could think of that he shouldn’t know about, and he magically knew more than me about it. Prioritize Effectively Using This Proven Strategy!

Hi, and welcome to the Leadership Done Right YouTube channel. In life it’s important to prioritize effectively. Everyone makes many choices on a regular basis. Those choices impact every aspect of life including family, work, religious activities, education, etc. Each choice on its own may seem insignificant, but together they lead to the type of person you are as a whole.

When making choices it is very important to prioritize effectively so you make the most effective use of your time. A little while back I heard a speech given by Dallin H. Oaks. He spoke about how to prioritize effectively and make correct choices. His emphasis was to categorize your choices as good, better, and best choices.

Prioritize Effectively

Let’s dig a little deeper to learn how to prioritize effectively. Think about what activities, tasks, responsibilities, etc. are most important to you and deserve your time. So how do you decide what is “important?” In line with Dallin H. Oaks’s speech, I categorize each activity and decision as the good, better, or best decision.

What is a Good Decision?

There are many good things that one can their spend time on. A first step to prioritize effectively is to identify what is even worth your time.

Dallin H. Oaks said:

“We should begin by recognizing the reality that just because something is good is not a sufficient reason for doing it. The number of good things we can do far exceeds the time available to accomplish them.”

There are so many good things we can do with our time. When I prioritize, I ask if this is something I want to spend time on someday in the future. If the answer is yes but it does nothing to advance my goals now or anytime in the near future it is just a “good” thing that can wait until someday in the future.
