People claim entitlement for everything you can think of ranging from government support to jobs to the best entertainment. There is a major trend of people feeling they deserve free things like iPods, iPhones, computers, laptops, TVs, etc. There are so many people that feel they deserve the good things in life without putting forth the hard work and effort required to obtain them.

What’s worse is that people feel that, just because they breathe air, the world owes them the very best. Entitlement is the idea of getting something for nothing. There is an ever increasing thought that, “If everyone else has the latest and greatest, I should too. I, however, should get it for free because I am entitled to it”. Leadership Lessons From the Iowa Caucus

As the Iowa caucus came to a close the results were so close that only eight votes separated the top two candidates.  It was the closest presidential GOP contest in U.S. history and Mitt Romney came out as the winner.  The close finish made me ask questions about what factors led to the resulting eight vote difference.  Because it is politics, there were many factors that led to a close finish, but I am going to look at just a few that relate to leadership.

Poor Leadership, Part 2 of 2

I asked a few questions at the close of Poor Leadership, Part 1 of 2, so in this post I will answer the questions and tell you how I would respond.

As a leader, how would you have handled this situation?

I always try to be very upfront and honest in all that I do.  With that being said, the approach I would take would be very different than that of John.  When I have people come to me for help, whether it is an employee, coworker, or customer, the first question I ask is, “What is your timeline for this request?”  From there, I work with them so we are on the same timeline.

Poor Leadership - Part 2 of 2

Although this request is somewhat different than a standard request, I would take a very similar approach.  I would set out a specific timeline with the employee detailing how and when I would get the information on the requirements for the promotion and then help them obtain the promotion.  I would then schedule out blocks of time to work on obtaining information on the qualifications for the promotion.

If the promotion information was easy to obtain, I would then try to figure out what paperwork needed to be completed for the promotion.  I would be sure to regularly update the employee on the progress I was making on the timeline.  That would be especially important if there were roadblocks in meeting the specific deadlines.

What We Can Learn From Treadway Tire Company

Most of the lower level leaders within the company were either under trained or not trained at all. Three things that could have been done to fix the system would be an organized training system within Treadway Tire, less pressure on the foreman and supervisors for immediate results on things that were outside their control, and shorter shifts.
