Hi friends! In this week’s episode, I am going to share five tips for new leaders. These tips will help you start off on the right foot so you can gain the respect of those you lead. Before we get to that, I want to share some quick tips for the week.

Tip of the Week

Every year around this time, I start thinking about education. My kids are going back to school and I can feel fall coming on. I love the feeling and I love thinking about education. I also love thinking about and setting new goals. With those two thoughts in mind, I set goals for education for the upcoming school year.

If you have not completed all of your educational goals, now is the best time ever to start those goals back up. Look into opportunities to progress your education. There’s many ways you can do that. I have other posts and podcast episodes that focus more specifically on education, so I won’t go into much more detail now. Here’s just a few ways you can advance your educational goals. Go to school, get into a certification program, take an online course, or look into other programs to advance your education.

5 Pieces of Advice for New Leaders

New leaders go through a wide range of emotions. There’s excitement about the new opportunities, anxiety about making a mark, and confidence in the skills that brought them to where they are. With all this excitement, they also often lack knowledge and experience. There’s nothing wrong with that. The way to overcome those feelings is to seek advice. Along those lines, I was recently asked, “What is your advice for new leaders?”

Hello, hello! This week I was out with some friends and we were doing some off-roading in my truck. I stopped for a moment so we could look at some wildlife in the area.

When we decided to go again, I shifted the car and hit the gas. By accident, I shifted to neutral so I wasn’t going anywhere. I casually said to my friends, “Well, I can’t go anywhere without the car in gear. I can’t go back or forward.” To which my friend replied, “There’s a lot of good lessons we can take from that.” So what are some lessons we can learn from that?

There’s a lot of great lessons about progress. I want to focus this episode on what we can do in leadership to avoid being stuck in neutral. In leadership, we can’t be stuck in neutral. Instead, we need to be progressing to move forward!

Leadership Tip of the Week

Create an agenda for your meetings and hold to it. The most ineffective meetings I have ever attended have been the ones where there was no agenda from the start. Everyone showed up to the meeting with different expectations which led to confusion, frustration, and ineffective meetings.

The agenda may seem insignificant or be overlooked, but it is extremely important for the success of the meeting. The agenda acts as a roadmap for the meeting. It provides direction and helps people stay on track.

An agenda should include the following:

The date and time of the meeting
The title of the meeting
The end goals, purpose, and specific objectives of the meeting
The meeting facilitator
The person in charge of taking meeting minutes.
The main points/topics that will be discussed
The length of time you will talk about each topic

Get to Know Kevin

Our guest today was raised in California and graduated from the California Maritime Academy in 1979 with a Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering.

Military Sealift Command

He worked for the Military Sealift Command as a Chief Engineer, Port Engineer, and Engineering type desk until 2007, then worked for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration as a Chief Engineer and Chief of Fleet Maintenance and Logistics until he retired from federal service in 2012.

Educational Background

He graduated from the Naval War College in 1999 with a Masters in National Security and Strategic Studies and is now completing his PhD dissertation at Walden University. He is currently a program manager for a government contractor providing technical support for his two former employers.

Outside Work and Career

He is also a family man and has been married for 37 years, with 3 children and 5 grandchildren. His hobbies include writing poetry, music, and playing guitar in a local bluegrass band.

My Personal Connection

I connected with him through some LinkedIn groups a few years back. I’ve learned a lot from his knowledge, experience, and expertise. He really knows a lot about the traits of good leadership. I love learning and with back to school time just around the corner, today is a great day to start thinking about learning. If you are young you can go back to school or college. But what if you are not in that stage anymore? How can you continue to learn?

Devastation Before The Blessing

I recently heard a lady speak that said she married young. Not long after getting married, she started having kids and soon she had seven kids. What a big family! She was in the late stages of her eighth pregnancy when she found out that her husband had a debilitating disease. He went from being a normal active person to being only there physically but mentally in another place. It was such a devastation.

The disease took such a toll on his body that he went downhill extremely fast. They eventually had to put him into a nursing home and lost him not long after. Leadership is one of the most discussed topics in the sphere of management. Few leaders, however, speak of this subject because they are busy with their primary business of managing people.
