The Right Attitude To Lead

By Brandon W. Jones on August 27, 2013 1

This is a guest post by Dennis Phoenix. He is a human resource specialist and writer. He writes on topics including business relationships, productivity, employee satisfaction, and corporate awards. He spends his weekends mountain biking and photographing nature. His twitter handle is @DennisPhoenix1.

attitudeHaving the right attitude is often the lynchpin to a successful outcome. As history has shown, leaders with a can-do attitude have often positively impacted those around them. If you have the responsibility of a leadership position in business, whether as an owner or manager, it is critical for you to develop a set of attitudes that will guide your dealings with those entrusted to you.

Fortunately, these attitudes have been around as long as man has. They reflect simple and effective principals that have stood the test of time. Perhaps they are best described by those that have been this way before. Listen to the following quotes of successful individuals and see if the principals they lived by could make you a more effective leader.

Help others to succeed

The growth and development of people is the highest calling of leadership. —Harvey Firestone

One of the primary roles of a leader is often misunderstood. In fact, many in leadership positions work in opposition against this principal. Instead of progressively working to build up the skill sets of those they manage, some leaders inadvertently hinder the development of their employees. Leaders should always look to hone the skills of those they supervise.

Money and time spent training their employees is never wasted. Not only will your employees become more effective in the workplace, they will also be willing and able to tackle any challenges thrown their way. [Read more…] about The Right Attitude To Lead

Leadership Qualities You Need to Develop

By Brandon W. Jones on May 22, 2013 1

This is a guest post by Paul Smith. He likes music and comedies. He knows perfectly what he wants to achieve in his life. He is fond of writing and you can evaluate his works at essay writing service uk.

Your life is dull and boring, the days are similar and nothing special happens. You have a hateful work, your colleagues don’t seem to be friendly and you don’t know what you want to achieve. You dream about the better future, however don’t do anything to come closer to it. The leader always executes the possible ideas and it is the main difference between him and the dreamer. Stop living in your dreams – develop your leadership and make your desires real.

Leadership Qualities You Need to Develop

What are the main leadership qualities? Here I want to present you a short list of the required qualities to develop if you want to change your life for better.

Good communication. Well-developed communicative skills are very important in business, especially when you are a director. If you have some great idea concerning some future project or whatever else and cannot state your thought clearly, you will never come to a united cooperation and will never arrive at a consensus. That is why it is important to work for the improvement of your communication. [Read more…] about Leadership Qualities You Need to Develop

Developing Leadership Excellence

By Brandon W. Jones on April 23, 2013 3

Developing Leadership Excellence

Leadership excellence is a state of being that takes time to develop.  Leadership excellence can, however, be developed more quickly when one understands the values and characteristics of great leaders.  Great leaders have many great attributes.

Developing Leadership Excellence

Leadership Excellence in Action

Several years ago, I had a leader in Boy Scouts that taught me what it means to obtain leadership excellence.  He worked as a physician’s assistant and was very busy at times, but he always made himself available to me and other boys in our scout troop.  In his leadership he showed vision, charisma, innovation, honesty, accountability, integrity, compassion, honor, trust, boldness, confidence, work ethic, and many other great leadership traits.  At each activity, he required that we live up to the standards that he lived by and those that were taught in boy scouts. Because I was young, this had a great impression on me.  I learned a lot from him.  He gave me confidence that it was possible to be the person that we were taught to be by how he embodied leadership excellence. 4 Characteristics Of The Silent Leader

By Brandon W. Jones on April 16, 2013 4

Many of us have had a silent leader in our lives.  The silent leader has a powerful impact on you because they don’t have to say much to be a great leader.  They set a strong positive example for everyone to follow.  Also, when they lead, others follow just because of who they are.

I will use the pronoun “he” throughout this post to mean both he and she rather than go back and forth between “he/she” and “him/her”.  I do not intend offend anyone.

4 Characteristics Of The Silent Leader

Four Characteristics of a Silent Leader

Each silent leader that I have met had some if not all of the following four characteristics.

Example

A silent leader understands that he sets the example for those he leads.  He knows that he cannot expect his followers to do anything he is not willing to do, so he sets the best example he can for his followers.  In addition, the silent leader realizes that everything that happens around him starts with what he does.  If he sets a good example, people are more likely to do good while if he sets a bad example, others will be more likely to make poor choices as well.  To set a good example, the silent leader takes the initiative and determines how he is going to act in any given situation before the situation arrives so that he can make good choices.

Why Complacency And Leadership Don’t Mix

By Brandon W. Jones on March 29, 2013 6

Several years ago, I had a great leader, G. Lawrence “Larry” Spackman, that taught me a valuable lesson about complacency.  He was very successful in everything he did and attributed his success to his strong drive and unrelenting desire to never back down when obtaining his goals.

When I was around Larry, he always stressed the importance of working hard and doing your very best.  In addition to teaching correct principles, he lived what he taught.  Because he was so driven, he despised complacency.  He taught that complacency would keep you from reaching your dreams and goals.  Larry taught me to avoid complacency at all cost.  His example confirmed the validity of what he told me.

Complacency and Leadership

As a leader, don’t let yourself become satisfied with average performance.  Never give less than your best effort because if you do, you will give way to complacency.  Complacency is very destructive and has many negative side effects.  There are three major side effects that come with a complacent attitude. Four Lessons From A CEO

By Brandon W. Jones on March 11, 2013 2

I love learning lessons from a CEO.  I am a younger leader, but have been a leader in different capacities for many years.  Through my time in leadership, I have always been fascinated by CEOs because they have reached the top leadership position in their organization.  There are many lessons from a CEO that you can learn as you review their behavior and responses to different actions.

A few years ago I read a case study about Gary Loveman and his transition as the CEO of Harrah’s.  The case study explained that he went from being a college professor to the CEO of a large organization without a long history of leadership.  When he joined Harrah’s, he started out as the COO and then became the CEO after five years.  This case study helped me learn lessons from a CEO.

Lessons From A CEO

Four Lessons From A CEO

Gary Loveman changed the system at Harrah’s.  He changed the system because of the person he was and the approach he took to leadership. There were four lessons from a CEO that we can learn from his success.
1. He gained credibility with the employees/management team.
2. He worked to understand the existing system
3. He had high expectations.
4. He led by example.
