The Five B’s Of Leadership Organization

By Brandon W. Jones on February 7, 2013 4

In order to be a good leader it is very important to be organized. As a leader, this can also be quite a challenge because in most cases leaders have many responsibilities that they must constantly balance to be effective in what they do. It can be very easy to become very organized in your approach to one responsibility, while letting others gradually get less organized.

The Five B's Of Organization

The Five B’s of Leadership Organization

The five B’s of organization will help you as a leader to focus your energy so that you can stay organized and maintain balance in your life.

1.  Be organized In your communication.

As a leader, you must communicate with others regularly. That communication is done in many forms, e.g. public speaking, email, letters, meetings, etc. To be organized in your communication means that you have a consistent message that goes out to everyone. To be organized, you are also direct in the message that you convey.

Have you ever worked for someone that would tell you one thing in front of your coworkers and then something different in front of your boss or other departments? Isn’t that frustrating? A leader that is organized in their communication, maintains their integrity by keeping the same message on all fronts. When you, as a leader, are organized in your communication, you gain the trust and respect of those you lead and they are more willing to follow you. Are you a better Leader or Manager? Is one better than the other? You’ve heard, “manage processes, lead people” seems simple; yet defining a Manager is relatively simple, while defining a Leader is like putting words to emotion. If Management is prose, Leadership is Poetry. Much thought has been poured into the definitions; pounds of books have been written to define and develop Leaders. We need practical applications of the concepts to make our businesses and organizations better. Gleaning from the works of others we can compile practical and workable definitions.

The goal is to run solid organizations; Management and Leadership are tools to help us fulfill that goal. It is a natural conclusion that we need to understand the tools and how we (personally) use them. You might have strengths in one over the other; in that case you can develop your own ability to wield the tool, or if you have the resources – hire the skill. Conducting a personal evaluation requires the specific skills of Managers and Leaders be defined. The definitions provide a framework for us to gauge our relative abilities and determine where to find opportunities for improvement. [Read more…] about Management Or Leadership? Both!

Go Wide Or Go Deep

By Brandon W. Jones on March 8, 2012 1

In today’s economic climate there are leaders that have very job specific knowledge, while there are other leaders that have a good overview of the company/organization but are great leaders. Each of these types of leaders has their own areas of expertise. The question is, “Which is more important to have to be successful?”

Go Wide Or Go Deep

Yesterday, the Wall Street Journal published an article about GE titled, The New GE Way:  Go Deep, Not Wide by Kate Linebaugh. The article explained that new approach that GE is taking with their leadership.

Go Wide

In the past GE had all of their high ranking leaders were to go wide. They would go from one department/location in the company to another on a regular basis. The rotations occurred every few years.

This approach allowed GE to develop their leaders with a broad range of experience. They had experience in many areas of the company, but they didn’t have really specific knowledge in any particular department of the company. Each area of the company had their experts, but the leaders had general knowledge.

Going Above And Beyond For Customer Service

By Brandon W. Jones on February 18, 2012 0

As leaders, it is essential that you emphasize the importance of good customer service. As you emphasize it, you must also lead by example. You must show your employees what it means to give good customer service.

My Experience

Recently, I had an interesting experience with customer service. My wife and I got the oil changed in our truck at Walmart. Afterwards, I noticed a few small oil spots on the driveway from time to time. I didn’t, however, see a significant amount of oil loss each time I checked the oil. Once the truck hit 3,000 miles we took it in to get the oil changed.

We went to a local oil and lube shop and were told they wouldn’t change the oil because the pan was stripped. They didn’t want to take any liability for changing the oil on the truck with a stripped oil pan. That was very frustrating because we needed the truck to get around, but couldn’t get the oil changed without fixing the oil pan. We also didn’t want to drive the truck too much without getting the oil changed because we didn’t want to go way over on miles. [Read more…] about Going Above And Beyond For Customer Service

What Would You Do As The Boss?

By Brandon W. Jones on February 15, 2012 2

I read an article in the Wall Street Journal yesterday titled, “Where’s the Boss? Trapped in a Meeting” by Rachel Emma Silverman. The article talked about a study that was done on CEOs. London School of Economics and Harvard Business School did a study of over 500 CEOs from various companies around the world.

What Would You Do As The Boss?

The studies were done to see how they used their time. The results were tracked by the CEOs’ personal assistants for anything the CEO did for more than 15 minutes during the day. Some of the results were very interesting. The average tracked CEO worked 55 hours a week and spent 18 hours in meetings.

What is in a Title?

By Brandon W. Jones on July 24, 2011 3

Every job has a specific title whether it is an entry level position or the CEO. So what does each title mean? Does the title give an accurate measure of the value of an employee? Titles are sometimes very good, but at the same time they can be very deceiving.

What is in a Title?

Career Progression

I recently spoke to a friend of mine that we’ll call Brad. He has a specific title within his company. At his company, each employee that starts out in his position has to work their way from step 1 to step 3 where they are then considered for management. Brad has been in his step 2 position for the same length of time and has the same responsibilities as step 3 employees. He also has the same amount of experience on high profile projects as the step 3 employees.
