Lead for Success in the Present

As a leader, it is very easy to get caught up thinking about the future. It is easy to ask questions like, “When is the next opportunity going to come? When is our product going to be a hit? Will we have our the next big breakthrough going to happen? When will I get the next promotion? Is progress going to happen like I want it to?”

It is also easy to focus on the past. When thinking about your past it is easy to remember things better than they really were. Often people think about their “glory days” and reminisce as if they wish they could go back and stay in that time.

As you think about the future and reflect on the past, it is easy to lose sight of the present.

Lead for Success in the Present

I heard a quote from Gordon B. Hinckley that explained the importance of living in the present. He said:

I don’t worry too much about the future, and I don’t worry very much about the past. The past is gone, and you can’t change it, you can’t correct it. The future, you can anticipate, but you can’t necessarily do very much about it. It is the present you have to deal with. Reach out for every good opportunity to do what you ought to do. (Hinckley)

Surround Yourself With Great Leaders

Have you been the leader over people you felt were extremely capable?  What effect did they have on you?  As the leader, it is in your best interest to surround yourself with great leaders.  If you do so, they will drive you to be better.  They will help you be your best self.  They will also ask you the questions others are afraid to ask.

Great Leaders at PepsiCo

The Wall Street Journal had an article that focused on Pepsi’s move to surround the CEO with outstanding leaders.  The article was titled, PepsiCo Positions Top Officials by Mike Esterl and Joann S. Lublin.  The article highlighted two big moves made by PepsiCo.  Pepsi is surrounding the Chairman and Chief Executive, Indra Nooyi, with two great leaders.  Pepsi brought in the former senior Wal-Mart Stores Inc. executive Brian Cornell as the head of one of Pepsi’s largest and most profitable units.  In addition, the longtime company executive John Compton was promoted to President of the company. I really like this quote because it really helps to keep things in perspective and consider the big picture when making decisions. There are certain moments in life that are turning points in life.

As you think about everything you are looking forward to, it can be hard to think about the present.

How To Use Leadership Resources Effectively

From my experience, one leadership challenge many face is learning and understanding their own limitations.  As a first-time leader, you may have the desire to make big changes and do everything you feel a leader should do.  Shortly after you start trying to make every change you envision, you will realize that you can’t do everything all at once. It is because you don’t know how to use your leadership resources effectively.

Leadership Resources

There are many leadership resources available to each leader. Their leadership resources, however, are in the form of human,  natural, or capital resources. To use those resources effectively, you must do the following two things.

Prioritization

Because you can’t do everything right now, you must understand what needs to be done now and what can be done later. You must prioritize effectively. One thing that really helps me to prioritize is writing a to-do list.  The list shows “what” I need to.  From there I use the quadrant system taught by Stephen R. Covey in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People to create my priority list.  I separate out what is important and what is not, versus what is urgent and what is not.
