Learn To Be Fearless

As a leader, learning to be fearless is invaluable.  The fearless leader is not afraid of what others think.  He doesn’t get paralyzed by fear.  The fearless leader thinks outside the box.  He fears nothing and changes when necessary for improvement.  The fearless leader doesn’t use or think about words like “challenge” or “problem,” but instead talks of “opportunities” and “blessings.”

Several years ago, I was a missionary for my church.  During that time, I spent 12 hours a day teaching people about Jesus Christ.  I spent time walking up and down the streets and going door-to-door to find people to teach.  People regularly ignored me and/or reject me because of the message I shared.  Sometimes people even yelled  and were very rude.

In that environment, I was very fear or discouraged at first because of the rejection.  I didn’t like being rejected.  The leaders that I worked under, however, created a fearless culture.  Each week he taught us the importance of being fearless.  His goal was to change our mindset so we only thought about being fearless.

The Power Of Faith In Leadership

In leadership, the principle of faith is understated and underemphasized.   Faith allows you to accomplish great things.  You can make miracles happen in your leadership with just a small amount of faith.  Dan Black, at Dan Black on Leadership, said regarding faith that, “The start of any good vision is rooted with faith.”

There are many leaders that start out with a dream.  They imagine or picture something in their minds that they want.  Some of them even have a strong desire to obtain it.  Is that desire or want enough?  No, they need the power of faith to realize their dream.  That desire alone is not enough to accomplish anything.  Without faith, many leaders fail to realize their dreams.  They start working towards their dreams, but they fail to follow through  enough to achieve their dream.  They let it stay dormant within themselves and don’t do anything about it.  There are, however, leaders that become great by making their dreams a reality.The Power Of Faith In Leadership

The Power of Faith Realized

So what is the difference between the leader that has a desire and does nothing about it and the leader that makes their dreams a reality?  The difference is faith.  The dictionary defines faith as, “Faith is to hope for things which are not seen, but are true.  Faith is a principle of action and of power.  All true faith must be based upon correct knowledge or it cannot produce the desired results.”  The leaders that are successful obtain their success because they have a great amount of faith.  They have faith in themselves.  They also have faith in their coworkers, employees, and leaders.  Most importantly, many great leaders have faith in God. Do you remember who your childhood heroes were? What did you like about them? What qualities did they have that made you look up to them? What did the heroes do to gain your trust or support? In today’s world everyone wants to have and be a hero.

When I think of my heroes I think of people like my parents, grandparents, Steve Young, Jerry Rice, Ronald Reagan, past leaders and coaches, etc. Each of these people played an important role in shaping me into who I am today.

Each was a hero for a different reason. Those that were close to me like my parents, grandparents, leaders, and coaches played a more personal role in my development. On the other hand, those famous heroes played a much different role.

Why Complacency And Leadership Don’t Mix

Several years ago, I had a great leader, G. Lawrence “Larry” Spackman, that taught me a valuable lesson about complacency.  He was very successful in everything he did and attributed his success to his strong drive and unrelenting desire to never back down when obtaining his goals.

When I was around Larry, he always stressed the importance of working hard and doing your very best.  In addition to teaching correct principles, he lived what he taught.  Because he was so driven, he despised complacency.  He taught that complacency would keep you from reaching your dreams and goals.  Larry taught me to avoid complacency at all cost.  His example confirmed the validity of what he told me.

Learn To Prioritize Effectively

How do you prioritize effectively?  In life there are many choices that must be made on a regular basis. There are choices in all aspects of life including family, work, religious activities, education, etc. All the choices alone may seem insignificant, but they lead to the type of person you are as a whole.  When making choices it is very important to prioritize effectively so you make the most effective use of your time. A little while back I heard a speech given by Dallin H. Oaks.  He spoke about how to prioritize effectively and make correct choices. He spoke about the difference between good, better, and best choices.How can you prioritize effectively?

Prioritize Effectively

To prioritize effectively, it is important to think about what activities, tasks, responsibilities, etc. are most important to you and deserve your time.  So how do you decide what is “important?”  I use a simple criteria to define what is important and where I spend my time.  I define things I can do as good, better, and best.

Good

There are many good things that one can spend time on.  A first step to prioritize effectively is to identify what is even worth an ounce of your time.  In the speech Dallin H. Oaks gave, he said, “We should begin by recognizing the reality that just because something is good is not a sufficient reason for doing it. The number of good things we can do far exceeds the time available to accomplish them.”  There are so many good things we can do with our time.  When I prioritize, a good thing is something that falls under a the thought that, “some day this may be something I will do, but today is not that day and right now is not a good time.” [Read more…] about Learn To Prioritize Effectively
