How To Use Leadership Resources Effectively

From my experience, one leadership challenge many face is learning and understanding their own limitations.  As a first-time leader, you may have the desire to make big changes and do everything you feel a leader should do.  Shortly after you start trying to make every change you envision, you will realize that you can’t do everything all at once. It is because you don’t know how to use your leadership resources effectively.

Leadership Resources

There are many leadership resources available to each leader. Their leadership resources, however, are in the form of human,  natural, or capital resources. To use those resources effectively, you must do the following two things.

Prioritization

Because you can’t do everything right now, you must understand what needs to be done now and what can be done later. You must prioritize effectively. One thing that really helps me to prioritize is writing a to-do list.  The list shows “what” I need to.  From there I use the quadrant system taught by Stephen R. Covey in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People to create my priority list.  I separate out what is important and what is not, versus what is urgent and what is not. Why All Leaders Should Read The 4-Hour Workweek

I recently finished reading the book The 4-Hour Workweek: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich (Expanded and Updated) by Timothy Ferriss. This book is amazing and has a lot of great tips for leaders.

Reading the title you may ask, “How can you be a great leader if you only work 4 hours a week?” Well, the principles you will learn from this book will help you to be a more focused and purposeful leader. Tim Ferriss teaches you things you can do to eliminate the fluff from your life so that you don’t spend time doing things that others could or should be doing and you will learn how to actively determine what is worth your time and what is not.

The 4-Hour Workweek

When I read this book there were many great lessons and pointers that will help me to be a better leader and be more successful in the future. Of all the great things I learned, there were five main points that will benefit leaders. Those points are:

1.  Define what you want out of life rather than your career.

As a leader, it is really easy to get caught up in seeking the next step of progress as you try to climb the corporate ladder. You can become so focused on the next promotion or advancement that you lose sight of why you are doing what you are doing. You should instead focus on what you want out of life, i.e. your personal, family, and educational goals, trips you would like to take, places you would like to see and things you would like to do.

When you focus on what you want out of life rather than a career, it is much easier to change your job or occupation to fit your life goals.  This approach allows you to be more successful as a leader because it causes you to think more deeply about what you spend your time doing.  If you are a leader and your heart isn’t in it, you probably won’t be the best leader you could be.  You will probably only be a half-hearted leader at best if your heart is in a different place. Learn To Be Fearless

As a leader, learning to be fearless is invaluable.  The fearless leader is not afraid of what others think.  He doesn’t get paralyzed by fear.  The fearless leader thinks outside the box.  He fears nothing and changes when necessary for improvement.  The fearless leader doesn’t use or think about words like “challenge” or “problem,” but instead talks of “opportunities” and “blessings.”

Several years ago, I was a missionary for my church.  During that time, I spent 12 hours a day teaching people about Jesus Christ.  I spent time walking up and down the streets and going door-to-door to find people to teach.  People regularly ignored me and/or reject me because of the message I shared.  Sometimes people even yelled  and were very rude.

In that environment, I was very fear or discouraged at first because of the rejection.  I didn’t like being rejected.  The leaders that I worked under, however, created a fearless culture.  Each week he taught us the importance of being fearless.  His goal was to change our mindset so we only thought about being fearless.

Reflecting On Your Leadership Style – Corporate Embers Book Review

Recently, I read a book called Corporate Embers by Debbie Nicol.  This book explains a variety of scenarios that happen in a corporate environment.  Each chapter of the book explained situations that occurred and then went on to ask a question or make a statement about a lesson that can be learned from the scenario.  In many of the scenarios mentioned, the book focused on the leader and how they responded or failed to respond.  By taking this approach, Debbie makes you think about how you act and respond as a leader.

Debbie discussed a variety of lessons that can be learned as you make leadership choices.  Through the scenarios she explained the importance of communication, the leader’s example, building a team work environment, engaging your employees, addressing your customers’ needs, having cultural sensitivity, and many other topics.  As I read her examples and the lessons learned, I could envision similar situations I’ve experienced as a follower and as a leader.

Corporate Embers provoked me to think about how I act as a leader.  As I read, I thought a lot about the following three questions.
