Five Leadership Principles For Beginning Leaders

By Brandon W. Jones on November 9, 2017 3

A little while back I went to a leadership training meeting for new leaders. My role was to support the new leaders I oversaw. As part of the training, they discussed many topics related to effective leadership. One of the speakers mentioned five leadership principles for beginning leaders that really stuck out to me.

Leadership principles

5 Leadership Principles For Beginning Leaders

As people implement each of the five leadership principles, they will improve their leadership capabilities and become better leaders.

1. Determine Needs

Before much progress can be made, leaders must determine the needs of their target audience. The needs fall into one of three categories. They include the needs of the:

  2. Employees
  3. Organization

When you cannot ask what the needs are or they are not explicitly stated, be observant to recognize the unstated needs. Once the needs of the specific groups are identified, determined how to best fill those needs. [Read more…] about Five Leadership Principles For Beginning Leaders

Personal Development is a Key to Success

In an environment where leadership skills were not readily taught, Tal decided that if he was going to be a great leader he had to take matters into his own hands. He realized that personal development is the key to success so he began reading many books, experimenting with what he was learning, and attending conferences and seminars to learn additional leadership skills.

In his personal development journey, he did a lot of internal reflection by asking questions like, “Who do I want to be as a leader?”, “What kind of a leader do I want to be?”, and “How do I want others to see me?”. When he asked these questions it was a turning point in his life because he took responsibility for his own growth and leadership development. NFL Stories

Last week was the start of NFL preseason and college football starts in just a few weeks. Of all the stories, one stood out more than the rest. I’ll start by asking… Who is the current NFL football player with the most jersey sales? Your probably thinking, Tom Brady, Dak Prescott, Von Miller, Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers, Colin Kaepernick or one of the other big name players in the league, right? Three Techniques to Lead By Example

He explained three steps to effective lead by example that every good leader should follow.

1. Teach followers what to do.

This teaching is usually done through sit down meetings, phone calls, group discussions, and other forms of verbal explanations. This teaching can also be done in a classroom setting. What’s most important is that you teach your followers what to how to do their jobs and be good leaders. [Read more…] about 3 Steps to Effectively Lead By Example
