Hi friends! To all you that are listening in the United States, I hope you had a great Labor Day Holiday! This week we are going to talk about how to be resilient when the going gets tough. We’ll discuss five points to consider when you are in the middle of challenges and struggling.

Abraham Lincoln’s Resilience

One of my favorite people in history is Abraham Lincoln. He was an American statesman and lawyer who served as the 16th President of the United States from March 1861 until his assassination in April 1865. Lincoln led the United States through the American Civil War—its bloodiest war and perhaps its greatest moral, constitutional, and political crisis. In doing so, he preserved the Union, abolished slavery, strengthened the federal government, and modernized the economy.

Some might hear that he was the president and think he was lucky, overly smart, or just had it easy. That was NOT the case. He had many failures and setbacks before he became the President of the United States. Here’s just a few:

  • Lost job
  • Defeated for state legislature
  • Failed in business
  • Sweetheart died
  • Had nervous breakdown
  • Defeated for Speaker
  • Defeated for nomination for Congress
  • Lost renomination to Congress
  • Rejected for land officer
  • Defeated for U.S. Senate
  • Defeated for nomination for Vice President
  • Again defeated for U.S. Senate

All that happened in the 25 years before he became the president of the United States. Abraham Lincoln continuously had to be resilient to make it through in the face of all those setbacks. [Read more…] about Podcast Episode #66 — How to be Resilient When the Going Gets Tough

Hello, hello! This week I was out with some friends and we were doing some off-roading in my truck. I stopped for a moment so we could look at some wildlife in the area.

When we decided to go again, I shifted the car and hit the gas. By accident, I shifted to neutral so I wasn’t going anywhere. I casually said to my friends, “Well, I can’t go anywhere without the car in gear. I can’t go back or forward.” To which my friend replied, “There’s a lot of good lessons we can take from that.” So what are some lessons we can learn from that?

There’s a lot of great lessons about progress. I want to focus this episode on what we can do in leadership to avoid being stuck in neutral. In leadership, we can’t be stuck in neutral. Instead, we need to be progressing to move forward!

Sneak Peek

In this episode, I will share five ways we can move forward in our leadership.

Leadership Tip of the Week

Create an agenda for your meetings and hold to it. The most ineffective meetings I have ever attended have been the ones where there was no agenda from the start. Everyone showed up to the meeting with different expectations which led to confusion, frustration, and ineffective meetings.

The agenda may seem insignificant or be overlooked, but it is extremely important for the success of the meeting. The agenda acts as a roadmap for the meeting. It provides direction and helps people stay on track.

An agenda should include the following:

  • The date and time of the meeting
  • The title of the meeting
  • The end goals, purpose, and specific objectives of the meeting
  • The meeting facilitator
  • The person in charge of taking meeting minutes.
  • The main points/topics that will be discussed
  • The length of time you will talk about each topic

5 Tips for Leadership and Personal Progress

As I mentioned at the start, if we are stuck in neutral, we are not moving forward. That holds us back from becoming the leader we are meant to be. So let’s get down to business and discuss five tips to make leadership and personal progress! [Read more…] about Podcast Episode #63 — 5 Tips For Leadership and Personal Progress

In today’s episode, I will discuss how to become great leaders through small and simple means. We’ll discuss five actions you can take daily to become a great leader.

The Search for Gold

I want to start with a story from a speech I heard by M. Russell Ballard called Finding Joy through Loving Service. He said:

Oftentimes we are like the young merchant from Boston, who in 1849, as the story goes, was caught up in the fervor of the California gold rush. He sold all of his possessions to seek his fortune in the California rivers, which he was told were filled with gold nuggets so big that one could hardly carry them.

Discouragement Through Difficulties

Day after endless day, the young man dipped his pan into the river and came up empty. His only reward was a growing pile of rocks. Discouraged and broke, he was ready to quit until one day an old, experienced prospector said to him, “That’s quite a pile of rocks you are getting there, my boy.”

The young man replied, “There’s no gold here. I’m going back home.”

Walking over to the pile of rocks, the old prospector said, “Oh, there is gold all right. You just have to know where to find it.” He picked two rocks up in his hands and crashed them together. One of the rocks split open, revealing several flecks of gold sparkling in the sunlight.

Noticing a bulging leather pouch fastened to the prospector’s waist, the young man said, “I’m looking for nuggets like the ones in your pouch, not just tiny flecks.” [Read more…] about Podcast Episode #59 — Leadership Greatness by Small and Simple Actions

Hi friends! I am back home from Washington D.C. and am getting back into the normal grind of life. The conference I went to was an exceptional conference with wonderful speakers and a fantastic exhibition hall. What was even better than all that was the chance that I had to network and connect with great people.

Tip of the Week

That brings me to the tip of the week. Always be prepared to get to know new people and network with them. When I talk about networking, I am referring to just getting to know people. Don’t be fake, put up a front, or try to be someone you are not. Instead, be your honest and true self.

Also, be a good conversationalist by asking focusing your attention on the other person. Ask them about their life. What are they excited about? What drives them to be their best self? What are their dreams and passions?

As you are sincere with people and truly work to get to know them, they will gain your trust and confidence. That’s where the saying comes in that people do business with those that they know and trust. They will also follow the leader they know and trust. So when you network, be your true self, learn about the other person, and don’t just push your agenda.

Sneak Peek

Alright, in today’s episode, we’ll discuss how to meditate and the benefits of regular meditation.

A Story of Meditation

Before we get to that, I want to share a story I pulled from the website called The Guided Meditation Site by Caz also known as Victoria. She said:

I began meditating ten years ago. Here’s my journey to meditation and a fulfilling, happy life. [Read more…] about Podcast Episode #57 – Finding Peace Through Meditation

Leadership Challenges are Like a Hard Mountain Bike Ride

Alright, I want to tell you about a recent mountain biking experience. This weekend, my wife and I went on a very fun, but challenging bike ride.

The Preparation and Plan

We had to prepare for the ride first. We didn’t want to get lost so we figured out where we were going, and mapped out a trail that would be both fun and challenging. The trail was about nine and a half miles long and it was a 1,500-foot elevation climb and decent. As part of preparing for the ride, my wife, Cassie, set up a babysitter to watch our kids while we went on the ride. I also had to get the bike rack on the back of our truck and load up the bikes. And to finish it off, I got the gear ready to go and loaded into the truck. [Read more…] about Podcast Episode #48 — 5 Strategies to Overcome the Resistance on Your Leadership Journey
