Why All Leaders Should Read The 4-Hour Workweek

I recently finished reading the book The 4-Hour Workweek: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich (Expanded and Updated) by Timothy Ferriss. This book is amazing and has a lot of great tips for leaders.

Reading the title you may ask, “How can you be a great leader if you only work 4 hours a week?” Well, the principles you will learn from this book will help you to be a more focused and purposeful leader. Tim Ferriss teaches you things you can do to eliminate the fluff from your life so that you don’t spend time doing things that others could or should be doing and you will learn how to actively determine what is worth your time and what is not.

The 4-Hour Workweek

When I read this book there were many great lessons and pointers that will help me to be a better leader and be more successful in the future. Of all the great things I learned, there were five main points that will benefit leaders. Those points are:

1.  Define what you want out of life rather than your career.

As a leader, it is really easy to get caught up in seeking the next step of progress as you try to climb the corporate ladder. You can become so focused on the next promotion or advancement that you lose sight of why you are doing what you are doing. You should instead focus on what you want out of life, i.e. your personal, family, and educational goals, trips you would like to take, places you would like to see and things you would like to do.

When you focus on what you want out of life rather than a career, it is much easier to change your job or occupation to fit your life goals.  This approach allows you to be more successful as a leader because it causes you to think more deeply about what you spend your time doing.  If you are a leader and your heart isn’t in it, you probably won’t be the best leader you could be.  You will probably only be a half-hearted leader at best if your heart is in a different place. Help People Learn How to Change

When someone understands that change is necessary, it doesn’t mean they know how to make the change. They may know that something is important to do, but not know how to implement it. There are two types of people that don’t know how to change. There are humble people that want to change and will accept your help. And, there are people that want to change but are too arrogant to take help from anybody. As a leader, you will experience two extremes and everything in between.

Have you ever heard the saying that, “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks?” That saying is definitely true when it comes to change. There are a lot of people that have a very hard time picking up new methods or techniques when it comes to change.

Regardless of one’s age, there are many “old dogs” that can’t be taught new tricks. This could be the young teenager that thinks they know it all. It could be the recent college graduate that thinks he or she learned everything they needed to know to be successful in college. It could be the experienced professional that feels they have all the answers because they’ve “been there and done that.” There are also people that question why a change is necessary because they have gotten along this long without the change, so why do they need the change? When it comes to change, one of the key drivers is information. Information drives change because as people learn more, they act differently. They immediately want to act on their new knowledge, so that life can be better than it was up to this point.

Knowledge and information are increasing faster than ever before. Some researchers say that the amount of information available on the earth is doubling every five years. The more people know, the more they can act on their knowledge.

Information Drives ChangeToday, the Internet has made the transfer of information easier than ever before. With the Internet, people share knowledge and ideas across the world. Through this website and through social media, I am able to communicate with people that live all over the world. This exchange of information allows people to learn and grow much quicker in the past.

Knowledge is Power

Information drives change because knowledge is power. Have you ever been in a room where everyone knew more than you? Or, have you been in a situation where you knew you had a lot to learn to be more successful? Well, the saying that, “Knowledge is power” is just as true now as it was in the past. The more you know, the more you successful you can become. For that reason, people are doing all they can to obtain knowledge. People want to progress in life, so they can live a better life, be more powerful, and have more influence. As I mentioned in my last post, I will now be taking a themed approach on Leadership Done Right. I decided that there isn’t any better theme to start with than “Change.” With the New Year upon us and New Year’s resolutions very prevalent, change is an appropriate subject.

Over the last two years I have gone back and forth on how I wrote posts for Leadership Done Right. Sometimes I have been really strategic, while other times I just posted whatever was on my mind. Through this process I have learned some valuable lessons. One lesson I learned is that it is very important to be strategic in your posts.

Why should you be strategic?

1. So your audience knows what to expect. When you are strategic, you choose specific themes and let your audience know when and why you will talk about them. They should also know what you will post about and how it will help them. It also lets them know when to expect a new post. This helps your audience stay in tune with what you will talk about.

Connections Are King

Within the blogging world, there is a common saying that, “Content is King!” I believe, however, that this statement is not entirely true. Content is VERY important, but CONNECTIONS are King. You can have great content, but if you don’t have anyone coming to your website, the content will not be seen. This follows the old adage that it is not about what you know but who you know.

So why do I feel connections are king?

Connections are king because they consume and spread your content.  When I write a post on Leadership Done Right it can do really well or really poorly. If I share it with my friends, they read it and share it with their friends. If, however, I write a post and don’t share it with anyone, it usually doesn’t do well.  To give you an example, the posts that I share with my network get 90% more views than those that I just write and don’t share on my social networks.  Why is that? It is because once a post is shared, others share and spread the word about my post as well.

Connections are king because they give you recommendations and you listen. We hear ads and recommendations for all sorts of products, websites, etc. on the radio, TV, web, and through other forms of media.  How often do you take those recommendations? Well in most cases, you are probably slow to listen to them because you know they are just trying to sell you something.
