He has worked for the top hotel brands such as Marriott, Hilton, Starwood and Intercontinental Hotel Group. He realized that personal development is the key to success so he began reading many books, experimenting with what he was learning, and attending conferences and seminars to learn additional leadership skills.

In his personal development journey, he did a lot of internal reflection by asking questions like, “Who do I want to be as a leader?”, “What kind of a leader do I want to be?”, and “How do I want others to see me?”. When he asked these questions it was a turning point in his life because he took responsibility for his own growth and leadership development. How to Change With The Right Mindset

By Brandon W. Jones on October 19, 2017 0

How to Change with the Right Mindset

Hi, and welcome to the Leadership Done Right YouTube Channel. Change is often hard because knowing how to change with the right mindset can be difficult. Have you ever gone through an experience where change was happening around you and there was nothing you could do about it?

Change may have happened so quickly that you couldn’t maintain a stable and certain environment from day to day. Experiences like these can be very difficult and try our patience. But, when we learn how to change with the right mindset, we are able to handle them with more ease.

How to Change with the Right Mindset

How to Change with the Right Mindset

There are people that deal with change in stride and others that fight change as much as they can. And, there’s a wide range of people somewhere in between.

What does the Wrong Mindset Look Like?

So what does the wrong mindset look like? People like stability, consistency, and dependability. As a result, they often expect a stable and certain environment in most if not all aspects of life. When change happens, they think the role of the leader is to maintain a perfectly stable and certain environment and when that doesn’t happen, they get upset, frustrated, and even angry at leadership. They feel that change will make their life more challenging, so they don’t want it.

Don’t Be This Guy!

There is a guy I worked with once that fit right into this category. He fought any form of change that was introduced. We continuously encouraged him and tried to explain to him that the change was for his own good. And, if he would accept it and move forward, it would make his life easier. Rather than change and adapt to move forward, he would fight it until it was forced upon him and he had no choice but to accept it. Once he finally accepted it, his life was easier and he would always say, “What a great idea that was.” Then when a new change came up, he would fight it all over again. 5 Tips For Delegation In Leadership And Management - Ronald Reagan

Delegation in leadership and management is essential to accomplish great things. Whether you are creating a new business, starting a new team, tackling a big project, developing a new process, rebuilding a team, or trying to accomplish another big goal, delegation in leadership and management is how you get it done.

One of my favorite delegation quotes is from Ronald Reagan. He said:

The greatest leader is not necessarily the one who does the greatest things. (S)He is the one that gets the people to do the greatest things. ~Ronald Reagan

I really like this quote because of all the things great leaders do, they are incredibly good at delegation.

So How Can You Use Delegation In leadership And Management?

Turning all your responsibilities over to others without any planning or preparation is not an effective to delegation. Instead, follow the five tips outlined below for effective delegation in leadership and management.

Tip #1: Prioritize To Your Strengths

Every leader has their own strengths and weaknesses. To use delegation in leadership and management effectively, identify your strengths to leverage them for the biggest benefit. If you don’t already know your strengths, use a strengths assessment tool. My favorite strengths finder tool is StrengthsFinder 2.0 by Tom Rath. What’s Your Definition of Success?

By Brandon W. Jones on October 11, 2017 0

What is Your Definition of Success?

Hi, and welcome to the Leadership Done Right YouTube channel. One of the main goals of every leader is to be successful. Success comes in many forms.

Completing a big project, helping an employee improve, hitting a budget target, meeting customer needs, or implementing a new procedure within the given parameters are all forms of success. There are also many other forms and definitions of success depending on your situation.

What Is The Definition of Success?

One important aspect of success is that success is in the eye of the beholder. What one person sees as failure may be a complete success for someone else. Likewise, the opposite may be true as well.

What is Your Definition of Success?

I’ve seen many cases where one person is successful in a specific way and that  causes the next person to feel they have to have the same success in the same way to be as successful. Don’t trap yourself with this mindset. Your skills and abilities are different and unique to you. And, your situation is often different and unique as well. Therefore, you should not determine your success based on the successes of others. Since each situation is unique, Success is unique to each situation and circumstance.

Success Starts with Expectations

Success is dependent on expectations. When you reach your expectations you feel successful, but when you don’t, you feel disappointment.

So let’s consider expectations. Expectations must be set correctly. Sometimes we set our own expectations and sometimes others set them for us. Regardless of who sets them, to be successful they must be based on YOUR abilities, not the abilities of others. When expectations are set by others, do everything you can to manage those expectations so they are accurate.

It All Relates to Goals

Success and expectations all relate to goals. Our goals are created because we have specific desired outcomes, or expectations. If we reach that outcome we feel we are successful, but if we don’t, we feel we are unsuccessful. [Read more…] about What’s Your Definition of Success?

My Recent Restaurant Experience – The Value of Conversation

Just recently I went to a restaurant, sat down, and began talking to others in my party. We were carrying on a good conversation and then one person at the table pulled out his phone to look at something. Before long, everyone at the table was looking at their phone and the conversation had all but ceased.

When that happened, I looked around the restaurant and saw many other tables where the same thing was happening. People would be gathered together for the meal but only giving the others in their party half or a quarter of their attention.

Now, I am right on the fringe between Gen X and millennials and some would say that this new phone addiction is just a millennial thing. I’ll tell you though, when I looked around, those on their phones were members of each generation.

As I saw that going on, I actually felt a little sad because so many people are missing out on so much just by staring at their phones. Just starting up a simple conversation can do so much for you and those you are sitting with.

5 Benefits From Carrying on a Conversation

So what can you gain from a conversation? We’ll talk about five benefits you can gain from continuing the conversation after a quick break for our sponsors. [Read more…] about Podcast Episode #19 — 5 Benefits From Carrying on a Conversation

How To Develop Leadership Empathy

How To Develop Leadership Empathy

Have you ever wanted to obtain empathy? People have asked me on multiple occasions, “How can I obtain leadership empathy?” This is a great question, so let’s talk about leadership empathy.

How To Develop Leadership Empathy

What is Leadership Empathy?

Before developing leadership empathy, one must understand what it means to have empathy. Here’s a few dictionary definitions of empathy:

  • The ability to understand and share the feelings of another. (Google)
  • the action of understanding, being aware of, being sensitive to, and vicariously experiencing the feelings, thoughts, and experience of another of either the past or present without having the feelings, thoughts, and experience fully communicated in an objectively explicit manner; (Merriam-Webster)
  • Empathy is the capacity to understand or feel what another person is experiencing from within the other person’s frame of reference, i.e., the capacity to place oneself in another’s position. (Wikipedia)

When you have empathy, you can understand, relate to, and feel what others are feeling as if you were in their shoes.

How Does Empathy Relate to Leadership Empathy?

In leadership, you lead others. Those you lead have many things going on in their lives. They go through challenges, trials, and other difficulties.

When one has leadership empathy, they feel for those they lead. They pay close attention to the feelings and thoughts of those they lead. As they are in-tune with others, they change their behavior to help those they lead in the best way for them. [Read more…] about How To Develop Leadership Empathy

3 Questions To Ask To Take the Initiative

By Brandon W. Jones on October 4, 2017 0

3 Questions To Ask To Take the Initiative

Hi, and welcome to the Leadership Done Right YouTube channel. Have you ever been with a group of people where no one would make the first move or take the initiative? Were people in the group shy and didn’t want to stand out? Did they feel intimidated? Or, was there something else that caused them to not take the initiative?

I have seen something very interesting happen in these group settings. After a few moments of uncomfortable silence, one person inevitably takes the initiative to act. He/she takes the initiative and get up to start working. From there, many others begin to act and follow suit. The true leader is the first person to take the initiative.

3 Questions To Ask To Take the Initiative

So what does it mean to take the initiative?

On the website Then Life Happens, Darren Sproat explained initiative as, “In its simplest form, taking initiative is doing without being asked to do.”

Taking the initiative means making the first move, being willing to do what others don’t want to do, or stepping up to make an introductory act or step leading to action. If you take the initiative, you are willing to be uncomfortable if it means the result is better than what you have to sacrifice or the discomfort you must go through when taking action. Leaders constantly take the initiative to get things done. They step up to make things happen. [Read more…] about 3 Questions To Ask To Take the Initiative

Down With The Drones…

The Wall Street Journal article Bold Eagles: Angry Birds Are Ripping $80,000 Drones Out of the Sky by Mike Cherney was recently published and really stuck out to me. It said, “Daniel Parfitt thought he’d found the perfect drone for a two-day mapping job in a remote patch of the Australian Outback. The roughly $80,000 machine had a wingspan of 7 feet and resembled a stealth bomber.

There was just one problem. His machine raised the hackles of one prominent local resident: a wedge-tailed eagle.

Swooping down from above, the eagle used its talons to punch a hole in the carbon fiber and Kevlar fuselage of Mr. Parfitt’s drone, which lost control and plummeted to the ground.

“I had 15 minutes to go on my last flight on my last day, and one of these wedge-tailed eagles just dive-bombed the drone and punched it out of the sky,” said Mr. Parfitt, who believed the drone was too big for a bird to damage. “It ended up being a pile of splinters.” [Read more…] about Podcast Episode #18 — 5 Leadership Detractors And How To Avoid Them
