Leadership Through Influence and Persuasion

Leadership is not a one and done situation. “When I first started in leadership I assumed that you tell people what to do and they just do it. That sounds nice, but real leadership is not a position. Real leadership is influence and persuasion. People are going to get off track. That’s the reality of it. A true leader can take people that are off track and guide them back on track through influence and persuasion.”

In the simplest form, if you say to someone, “I want you to put that box into that corner.” When you say, “that box” they could think it’s the box on the left or the box on the right. Also, when you say, “that corner,” they could think it’s the corner on the right or the left. You can’t automatically think that people are going to view things from your own perspective. They may have a totally different world view than you.

Think of all the complexity with a task more complicated than “take this box and put it over there”. There are so many ways that people can decipher, so you have to put all that into consideration. When goal setting, it is imperative that you create a plan to complete your goals. Depending on the nature of the goal, the plan can be short, simple, and to the point. It can also be very long, complex, and require many people and steps to complete. What’s most important is that you have the appropriate plan for your goal.

Although each goal is different and requires different levels of complexity, there are five goal setting keys to create an effective plan regardless of the size of your goal.

The first key when goal setting is to create a clear picture of the desired outcome. Another way of putting it is to “Begin with the end in mind” as Stephen R. Covey would say. Identify key factors to obtain the desired outcome. For complex goals, there will be many factors that determine success or failure. A little while back I went to a leadership training meeting for new leaders. My role was to support the new leaders I oversaw. As part of the training, they discussed many topics related to effective leadership. One of the speakers mentioned five leadership principles for beginning leaders that really stuck out to me.

5 Leadership Principles For Beginning Leaders

As people implement each of the five leadership principles, they will improve their leadership capabilities and become better leaders.

1. Determine Needs

Before much progress can be made, leaders must determine the needs of their target audience. The needs fall into one of three categories. They include the needs of the:

  1. Customers
  2. Employees
  3. Organization

To determine these needs, ask and/or observe members of each group specifically. By asking what the needs are, you get direct feedback. When you cannot ask what the needs are or they are not explicitly stated, be observant to recognize the unstated needs. 3 Actions To Learn Something New Everyday

Hi, and welcome to the Leadership Done Right YouTube Channel. There’s a common saying that, “You learn something new everyday.” Many people say that as if it is a proven fact and it is inevitable. However, I believe that learning only takes place if you proactively choose to learn. There are people in the world that fail at the same thing over and over again and yet they approach everything exactly same each time.

They are not learning from their experience when they are repeating it over and over and not changing their actions. Sure, everyone goes through a new experience everyday, but does that mean that they are learning everyday? Not necessarily.

3 Actions to Learn Something New Everyday

Seek Learning By Study and By Faith

To learn something new everyday, it’s important to actively seek learning by study and by faith. There are many ways that you can learn. You can learn from organized education, an online course, audiobooks, or by other means. Regardless of how you seek learning, it’s important to study and have the faith to practice what you are learning.

For example, if you’re going through a math class, do everything you can to learn by studying the material and have faith in yourself that you can learn it. Also, have faith that what you are learning is practical and will be useful in your life.

Having faith that what you are learning, in any aspect, can be put it into action, will help you to learn more in the future.

Effective communication starts with knowing your audience. To understand why you should know your audience, here are questions you can ask.

Who is your audience?

Your audience is the person or group of people you are speaking with or directing your communication towards. When you talk to your significant other, he/she is your audience. While you speak to a large group, they are your audience. When you write an email or letter, the recipient is your audience.

Why should you know your audience?

To answer this question, let’s consider the following questions. Have you ever gone to a store to learn about a product and the store representative spoke to you as if you didn’t know anything about their product when you actually knew a lot about it? Or, have you spoken to someone that acted as though you knew exactly what they were talking about, but you didn’t have a clue? If you have experienced either of these situations, the person speaking to you failed to know their target audience before opening their mouth.

Find out all you can about your audience before you communicate with them. This is key teachings when you are in sales. Salesman that know their audience and speak to them appropriately are exponentially more successful than those that don’t. This is equally important to all professions and situations. How You Can Visualize Success

For many years, people have said that if you visualize success it will eventually come true. This principle has been followed in athletics, business, and education to name a few. It is commonly applied to wealth where people believe that if you visualize yourself rich, you will eventually become rich (e.g. Think and Grow Rich, The Science of Getting Rich).

The Wall Street Journal published an article called Can You Get Rich by Visualizing Yourself Rich? by Robert Frank. Robert Frank dug into the idea of visualization and what it means to visualize success. Robert included a story  about Sara Blakely, the billionaire founder of Spanx, because she is a strong proponent of visualization.

Sara said, “I believe you can take mental snapshots of your future and visualize success for yourself. If you mentally see yourself in a scenario, you’ll start to make decisions in your life that get you there.” Robert also explained that there are many critics that say visualization is just a flight from realism. What do you think? Does visualization really lead to success?

Does it Work to Visualize Success?

Many people and organizations have visions and vision statements. They use those visions to guide their employees to success. Visualization is similar to having a vision or vision statement, but it goes a little deeper. So let’s take a look at visualization.

What is Visualization?

Have you ever imagined in your mind how a situation will go before it happened? You probably thought about how the scenario would play out, comments people would make, and the room or environment in which it would happen?

If you have ever done this, you have visualized the situation. When people visualize success, they run through scenarios in their mind where they are successful over and over again before the situation actually happens.

People do visualization in a number of ways. Here’s just a few:

  • Visualize what you want and then write it down 15 times a day
  • Sit in a quiet location and run through a situation in your mind several times before it actually happens
  • Just before you are about to go on stage, in front of your boss, etc. take a quick moment to imagine yourself being successful

As a young man he dabbled in filmmaking and graphic art. It wasn’t until later, in his career at Southwest Gas, that he saw Organizational Development as the route he wanted to pursue. He had already acquired a degree in Psychology and went on to accomplish a Masters of Science in Leadership. At that time with Southwest Gas he held a PHR (Professional in Human Resources) from the Society for Human Resource Management.

The Jump into Organizational Development

His first couple of years in OD was spent traveling around the country acquiring certifications. He received certifications to train everything from typological tools, such as Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, to Situational Leadership, Kepner-Tregoe and half a dozen Franklin Covey courses and more. Next week, he will be on to his 19th certification in Change Management with Prosci.

Early Retirement

Patrick took early retirement from Southwest Gas to accomplish life goals. He lived for a short while in the South of France and continues to explore various countries that fascinate him. After three years away, Southwest Gas called to enlist him as a consultant. He currently assists the Organizational Development Department and the Project Management Office.
