Transition From Math Teacher to Corporate America

After a two years as a math teacher she transitioned into a global CPG company where she held positions as a retail coordinator, assistant product development manager, associate product development manager, and associate merchandise manager. After working there for five years, she became a retail and digital marketing consultant.

The Start of Style Collective

This diverse background led to her founding Style Collective and the Becoming Fearless podcast. Style Collective is a platform for female influencers to connect, grow, and learn how to be successful bloggers and entrepreneurs. The Becoming Fearless podcast is about finding your authentic self and living your values to become the person that you were meant to be. She connects women from all over the world through community and empowers them to do what they love through leadership and influencer education.

Lessons Learned From a Toxic Leader

Annie’s leadership journey started when she was 17 years old and her mom passed away from cancer. That led her to adopt a growth mindset. She began seeking new opportunities and challenges to honor her mom and make her proud.

Her senior year of high school she took pre-calculus and physics which led to a love of math and science. She went on to earn her BS in mathematics education and became a math teacher. From that tragedy, she learned that you can always find ways to grow from your experiences.

The Man Who Cut Michael Jordan

Have you ever heard the story of Michael Jordan getting cut from his high school basketball team? Well, there is definitely more to the story. When I think of getting cut, I think of not playing at all… instead, Jordan didn’t make the varsity team but made the JV team. I am going to share some insights from the Sports Illustrated article, “Did This Man Really Cut MICHAEL JORDAN?” by Thomas Lake.

JV Was Not an Oversight

“The decision to leave Jordan on JV as a sophomore was not an oversight. His coach, Clifton (Pop) Herring, and Pop’s assistants knew Jordan would ride the bench on varsity, so they put him on JV, and it worked out perfectly. When he got to varsity, he was ready to lead the team. Pop gave Michael his time but made him earn everything else. They would play Around the World after practice, and Pop was nearly unbeatable. Jordan hated to lose, of course, so he kept improving until the day he finally won.”

Michael’s Development

“Some people, including Pop’s friend Jimmy Hebron, the coach at New Hanover, believe Herring could have won a state championship if he had put the explosive and fast-growing Jordan at forward and let him “play volleyball” with the towering Leroy Smith. Hebron says this as a compliment to Pop for putting Jordan’s development ahead of Pop’s own desire for trophies. It’s true that Jordan was better served by playing point guard than he would have been banging on the blocks, but Pop’s assistant and friend Ron Coley says the move was designed to make the team better. His experiences led to him writing the book “The Millionaire Journey: A Guide for Anyone to Reach Financial Freedom”.

Our guest went on to earn a bachelor’s degree and an MBA from Georgia State University. Since that time, he has held a variety of positions in management and administration in health care systems. Some of those positions have included Director of Business Operations, Chief Executive Officer, Executive Director of Heart and Vascular, and a Board Member. Communication is One of the Biggest Needs

Early in Suzanne’s career, she took a leap and transitioned from the news room to CEO of her own entrepreneurial adventure. She decided to start Bates Communication. “I saw the path in my life to make a change. I guess I had the entrepreneurial bug. I started modestly just thinking, perhaps I could carve out a niche as a solo entrepreneur doing presentations, media, and leadership communication coaching.” That’s what she did in the beginning.

As she got to know more leaders, she realized there was a deeper need that she could fill. That required a more comprehensive approach. She built a company and brought in people that had expertise in a variety of areas.

The Need for Communication Coaching

As she consulted with a variety of companies, leaders explained that communication training and skills were the biggest need. That was due to communication breakdowns and challenges to effectively communicate the vision and direction of the organization.

Suzanne explained that “It’s [effectively communicating] the most important thing leaders can do. Learn to tell the story, engage their audiences, connect them to the purpose, and understand what kind of qualities of presence there are.” “Qualities of presence are a lot more than people think. Having the Right Team and Start with Purpose

When you hire the right people, you have smart people on your team. Leadership is really about having followers, knowing why you do what you do, and inspiring people.

As a leader, it is essential that you let people know why you are doing it so they can follow you through the tough times. This is especially true in a startup environment since there is more risk. When they know why you are doing it, they will follow you on your adventure. Think about “Why would someone come and work with you? They have to know why you are doing it.”
