Three Traits That Separate Good And Bad Leaders

By Brandon W. Jones on December 9, 2014 0

The Good Bad and Ugly of Leadership - Honesty

This is a guest post by Robert Conrad. He is a former Business student who graduated cum laude with a 3.91 GPA.  Much of his leadership skills were earned through his time as a manager, trainer and mentor for at-risk youth.  In his off-time, Robert enjoys hanging out with his family and playing video games.

Three Traits That Separate Good And Bad Leaders

Have you ever had a horrific boss? I believe that we have all worked a job with a less-than-stellar leader at the helm, and we all wish that they would either get fired or change for the better. However, not all of us can put an objective finger on where or why the disconnection is occurring. A great list of the main traits that describe an effective leader can be found here. When these qualities are not observed, there can be sad and sometimes hilarious repercussions. Three traits that separate good and bad leaders and are extremely important are discussed below.

Honesty

Good Example: Joe openly communicates to his staff letting them know where they stand and how their contributions impact the company. Joe’s employees begin to exhibit his behaviors due to feeling valued and cared about. The employees know exactly how their contributions bring value and a sense of accountability is fostered.

Bad Example: Seth doesn’t enjoy his job nor trusts his employees. As a result, he only tells them what he thinks they “need to know.” His employees can feel this tension and don’t communicate their questions or concerns. Thus, employees don’t feel valued, bottle up their emotions, begin to hate their job and ultimately seek other employment. The company also begins to suffer the rigors of a high turnover rate and heightened training costs to fill the gaps.

The Good Bad and Ugly of Leadership - Honesty

Ability to Delegate

Good Example: After successfully building a foundation of trust with his employees, Joe knows that he can trust their decision-making skills in all situations. Joe can confidently assign tasks to his employees and know that they will follow the example that he had set forth. [Read more…] about Three Traits That Separate Good And Bad Leaders

10 Qualities An Organizational Leader Should Possess

10 Qualities of an Organizational Leader

An organizational leader is not just defined by his role or some high position in the company, but he is defined by his actions and the traits that he doesn’t only possess but also displays. If you also want to be a great leader – one who can win the hearts of his colleagues – take a look at the following qualities:

1. A Real Organizational Leader Is Honest

A real leader holds integrity, values, morals and trust for his people. An organizational leader who owns these qualities will always have the ability to make people feel good about their environment and their jobs. Remember that employees always prefer to work for leaders whom they can feel comfortable with.

2. A Real Organizational Leader Likes To Communicate

An organizational leader will not be able to make his people understand what he wants to talk about if he does not communicate with people. Employees are not just interested in following an organizational leader, but interested in knowing his goals and values, and communication is the key to doing that. A successful organizational leader has the art of communicating in a way that makes everyone around him stay happy and agree with him at all times. How To Use Leadership Resources Effectively

By Brandon W. Jones on October 18, 2014 0

From my experience, one leadership challenge many face is learning and understanding their own limitations.  As a first-time leader, you may have the desire to make big changes and do everything you feel a leader should do.  Shortly after you start trying to make every change you envision, you will realize that you can’t do everything all at once. It is because you don’t know how to use your leadership resources effectively.

Leadership Resources

There are many leadership resources available to each leader. Their leadership resources, however, are in the form of human,  natural, or capital resources. To use those resources effectively, you must do the following two things.

Prioritization

Because you can’t do everything right now, you must understand what needs to be done now and what can be done later. You must prioritize effectively. One thing that really helps me to prioritize is writing a to-do list.  The list shows “what” I need to.  From there I use the quadrant system taught by Stephen R. Covey in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People to create my priority list.  I separate out what is important and what is not, versus what is urgent and what is not. There are still debates about if the great leaders are born or made. Some say that the leadership skills are something that’s in the blood, and if the person is not born a leader, no learning will help. Their opponents, however, state that the leadership is like a skill and it can be learned, as follows.

I agree with the second statement, and lots of leadership trainings and books on how to turn yourself into a leader also reaffirm it. But what the ‘leadership’ word means for us is plenty of skills and abilities, which, in my opinion, makes a successful leader. And, having formed these habits and ways to act, you can turn yourself into a good leader. So, what are these qualities?

  1. Confidence and high self-esteem. Probably, it’s the first point we mention when someone who is, in our opinion, a good leader. A leader cannot be imagined without faith in everything he does and belief in himself. [Read more…] about The Leaders Are Born But You Can Learn

Prevent Leadership from Becoming Micromanagement

By Brandon W. Jones on July 18, 2013 0

This is a guest post by Chloe Trogden.  She is a seasoned financial aid writer who covers specific opportunities such as grants for college. Her leisure activities include camping, swimming and volunteer work.

Dangers of Micromanagement

Many good leaders let their dedication and attention to detail become too much of a good thing – to the point where they are double-checking every detail of their employees’ work or they can’t let their employees make any

Prevent Leadership from Becoming Micromanagement

independent decisions, crippling work flow and robbing employees of a needed sense of autonomy or pride in a job well done.

Here are a few tips for how to prevent your leadership from becoming micromanagement: Take an honest look at your own management style. Is it more like micromanagement than leadership? Is it flirting dangerously close to the edge? Learning how to control this impulse will help you to create a happier work force that is more invested in their work and produces better results.

Learn to Delegate

When you maintain control over every aspect of a project or the decision making, you are micromanaging. It is important that you learn to delegate so that your employees feel empowered to make decisions and can use their unique skills to make a project successful. Rob them of that ability to make decisions for themselves, and they won’t make any. [Read more…] about Prevent Leadership from Becoming Micromanagement

What Would You Do As The Boss?

By Brandon W. Jones on February 15, 2012 2

I read an article in the Wall Street Journal yesterday titled, “Where’s the Boss? Trapped in a Meeting” by Rachel Emma Silverman. The article talked about a study that was done on CEOs. London School of Economics and Harvard Business School did a study of over 500 CEOs from various companies around the world.

What Would You Do As The Boss?

The studies were done to see how they used their time. The results were tracked by the CEOs’ personal assistants for anything the CEO did for more than 15 minutes during the day. Some of the results were very interesting. The average tracked CEO worked 55 hours a week and spent 18 hours in meetings.
