Information Drives Change

By Brandon W. Jones on January 15, 2014 0

Information Drives Change

When it comes to change, one of the key drivers is information. Information drives change because as people learn more, they act differently. They immediately want to act on their new knowledge, so that life can be better than it was up to this point.

Exponential Increase of Information

Knowledge and information are increasing faster than ever before. Some researchers say that the amount of information available on the earth is doubling every five years. The more people know, the more they can act on their knowledge.

Information Drives ChangeToday, the Internet has made the transfer of information easier than ever before. With the Internet, people share knowledge and ideas across the world. Through this website and through social media, I am able to communicate with people that live all over the world. This exchange of information allows people to learn and grow much quicker in the past.

Knowledge is Power

Information drives change because knowledge is power. Have you ever been in a room where everyone knew more than you? Or, have you been in a situation where you knew you had a lot to learn to be more successful? Well, the saying that, “Knowledge is power” is just as true now as it was in the past. The more you know, the more you successful you can become. For that reason, people are doing all they can to obtain knowledge. People want to progress in life, so they can live a better life, be more powerful, and have more influence. In addition, people want to create better lives for their family members through gaining and acting upon information. [Read more…] about Information Drives Change

Change Creates Opportunity For A Fresh Start

Change Creates Opportunity For A Fresh Start

Have you ever been in a situation where you felt you could do better, but were in an environment that made change extremely difficult?  Or, have you been in a situation that wasn’t going in the direction you wanted?  If so, you were probably in an environment where you needed a fresh start.  Change creates an opportunity for a fresh start.

Change Creates Opportunity For A Fresh StartDragos Roua is a blog writer at DragosRoua.com.  He specializes in goal setting.  He wrote a post called 50 Ways To Start Fresh.  In it he said, “Defeat. Boredom. Lack of meaning in your life. All these symptoms, and many others, of course, are a sign that you need to start fresh. To run again. To leave the old behind and embrace the new.”

What Is A Fresh Start?

A fresh start happens when you leave behind something old and start something new.  You meet new people, have new experiences, and start something new.  A fresh start brings new challenges and opportunities.  It also stretches you in ways that you have never been stretched in the past.  The fresh start can happen as a result of monumental or incremental change.

Making Monumental Change to Create a Fresh Start

There are many major changes you can make that will give you the opportunity for a fresh start.  Some monumental changes are:

  1. Taking a new job and/or getting a promotion
  2. Moving to a new city
  3. Starting a new business
  4. Going back to school
  5. Joining/starting a club
  6. Changing your profession
  7. Getting married

Each change listed takes you away from your old environment and puts you into a new one.  Some of the changes mentioned, however, are significantly bigger than others. Some take you out of one aspect of your life while others completely flip your world upside down.  The largest changes take you away from all that you know to put you into a completely new environment.  The smaller ones are still major changes, but they only take you away from one aspect of your life. Becoming An HR Business Partner

Becoming An HR Business Partner

This is a guest post by Bert Somsinsawasdi.  He is an HR Professional that currently manages the HR department for a fortune 50 company.  He oversees six facilities with approximately 1,300 employees.  His website is Understanding HR and his Twitter Handle is @BertSomsin

As revenues decrease and margins get tighter, focus is shifted towards increased efficiency and effectiveness.   Many corporations are weary about making adjustments to revenue producing sectors of the business so the support functions have been targeted for change.  One particular department undergoing dramatic changes across multiple industries is the human resources department.

Becoming An HR Business Partner

When earnings were plentiful, Human Resources consisted of many different sub-divisions such as: employee relations, learning and development, workforce planning, health and wellness, safety, recruiting, and so on.  Fast-forward to today when everyone is struggling to meet analyst expectations on Wall Street and you get a bandwagon movement towards a package deal approach. The separate divisions within HR have been dismantled and bundled up into one generalist model.

Large corporations like Amazon, Conoco Phillips, Northrop Grumman and Volvo, to name a few, have transformed to meet shareholder expectations by developing the position of HR business partner.  This revolution is demanding HR professionals with a wider skill set and deeper understanding of the overall business.  As the title implies, a business partner is involved in the execution of all initiatives. Gone are the days when technical knowledge was enough to move you forward in your career.  In the present and future, corporate America wants more! [Read more…] about Becoming An HR Business Partner

Change Creates Opportunity

By Brandon W. Jones on March 21, 2013 8

In leadership, change is a very common word.  Some people say that change creates opportunity while others say change is scary and negative.  In the fast paced, ever changing business world, one of the few constants is change.  Change is all around us.  From new leaders and job transfers to new policies and procedures, change is always occurring in one form or another.

Change Creates Opportunity

Change Creates Opportunity

In my life, I’ve found that change creates opportunity.  Some of the most difficult changes I have ever experienced also helped me to grow by leaps and bounds.  Several years ago, I was working for one boss that transferred to another department.  At that time I got a new leader.  I got along great with my first boss and we had a great working relationship.  I really enjoyed working for him and felt very sad when I got the new leader.  When I got the my new boss, I did everything I could to make it a smooth transition.  It was, however, quite a challenge to create a great working relationship. The Power Of Choices

By Brandon W. Jones on March 12, 2013 2

Do you understand the power of choices?  Everyday brings new choices and challenges.  You have to choose what to eat, what to wear, how to spend your time, what projects to work on, where you spend your money, who you spend your time with, etc.  We have to make many choices everyday.  Some of the choices are hard and others are easy.  As a leader, it is important to make good choices.  In this post I will share three important aspects of choices for you to consider to help you understand the power of choices.

[youtube=http://youtu.be/fZxset8fMrY]

Your power of choices as the leader

The power of choices is very evident as a leader.  You make choices all the time that almost always effect someone else.  Many times your choices have a major impact on those you lead.  In addition, the choices you make, as a leader, directly effect the behavior of your followers.  You set the example.  As you make good choices, there is a good chance those you lead will follow suit and make good choices as well.  At the same time, when you make bad choices you send a message to your followers that bad choices are okay.  (Have you seen the companies in the news with multiple people making bad choices?)

Do you understand the power of choices?

Ultimately, you have the power of choices and with that, you can choose between three types of choices.

  1. Good Choices.  There are many choices that are good.  Many of the good choices will help you move in the right direction in your life.  They allow you to do good things that will help yourself  and others.
  2. Better Choices.  However, even though there are many good choices, there are also better choices.  The better choices come in disguise because they are a little harder to see right off the bat.  The better choices help you reach your goals a little faster than the good choices.  They help you to move in a right direction but at a quicker pace than the good choices.
  3. Best Choices.  In addition to the good and better choices, there are also the best choices.  The best choices help you reach your goals the quickest.  They can be looked at as the top level choices.  As leaders, you should always seek the best choices.
