Hi friends! In this week’s episode, I am going to share five tips for new leaders. These tips will help you start off on the right foot so you can gain the respect of those you lead. Before we get to that, I want to share some quick tips for the week.

Tip of the Week

Every year around this time, I start thinking about education. My kids are going back to school and I can feel fall coming on. I love the feeling and I love thinking about education. I also love thinking about and setting new goals. With those two thoughts in mind, I set goals for education for the upcoming school year.

If you have not completed all of your educational goals, now is the best time ever to start those goals back up. Look into opportunities to progress your education. There’s many ways you can do that. I have other posts and podcast episodes that focus more specifically on education, so I won’t go into much more detail now. Here’s just a few ways you can advance your educational goals. Go to school, get into a certification program, take an online course, or look into other programs to advance your education.

5 Pieces of Advice for New Leaders

New leaders go through a wide range of emotions. There’s excitement about the new opportunities, anxiety about making a mark, and confidence in the skills that brought them to where they are. With all this excitement, they also often lack knowledge and experience. There’s nothing wrong with that. The way to overcome those feelings is to seek advice. Along those lines, I was recently asked, “What is your advice for new leaders?”

I was recently asked, “What advice would you give to new leaders?” To answer this question, I have to go back in time to when I was a new leader. As a new leader there are many things that went through my head. I felt excited, overwhelmed, nervous, and a wide range of other emotions. Those feelings were and are normal and expected. Hello, hello! This week I was out with some friends and we were doing some off-roading in my truck. I stopped for a moment so we could look at some wildlife in the area.

When we decided to go again, I shifted the car and hit the gas. By accident, I shifted to neutral so I wasn’t going anywhere. I casually said to my friends, “Well, I can’t go anywhere without the car in gear. I can’t go back or forward.” To which my friend replied, “There’s a lot of good lessons we can take from that.” So what are some lessons we can learn from that?

There’s a lot of great lessons about progress. I want to focus this episode on what we can do in leadership to avoid being stuck in neutral. In leadership, we can’t be stuck in neutral. Instead, we need to be progressing to move forward!

Sneak Peek

In this episode, I will share five ways we can move forward in our leadership.

Leadership Tip of the Week

Create an agenda for your meetings and hold to it. The most ineffective meetings I have ever attended have been the ones where there was no agenda from the start. Everyone showed up to the meeting with different expectations which led to confusion, frustration, and ineffective meetings.

The agenda may seem insignificant or be overlooked, but it is extremely important for the success of the meeting. The agenda acts as a roadmap for the meeting. It provides direction and helps people stay on track.

An agenda should include the following:

  • The date and time of the meeting
  • The title of the meeting
  • The end goals, purpose, and specific objectives of the meeting
  • The meeting facilitator
  • The person in charge of taking meeting minutes.
  • The main points/topics that will be discussed
  • The length of time you will talk about each topic

5 Tips for Leadership and Personal Progress

As I mentioned at the start, if we are stuck in neutral, we are not moving forward. That holds us back from becoming the leader we are meant to be. So let’s get down to business and discuss five tips to make leadership and personal progress! [Read more…] about Podcast Episode #63 — 5 Tips For Leadership and Personal Progress

Hi friends! I hope your summer is going well! It is crazy how fast this summer and year are going! Thinking about that reminds me how important it is to make the best of every moment!

Sneak Peek

In this week’s episode, I am going to share 10 questions you can ask to determine if you are a know-it-all. Before we get to that, I want to share a story with you.

The Know-It-All

Several years ago, I traveled with my family to visit friends of ours. We spent the weekend with them and had a lot of time to visit. At the time, I was in high school and loved to play and talk sports. So, needless to say, we talked a lot about high school and professional sports. We also talked about some of my other interests.

During all our discussions, the father always knew more than me. He was smarter than me and had a way of showing that he knew more than me. At first I admired his experience and knowledge, but after a short time I began to be frustrated. With everything I said, he had to one-up me! Update: Sad News… But Much Thanks and Appreciation

Hi friends! In last week’s episode, I shared a story about my cousin that was lost in the Utah mountains. I want to thank each of you for your prayers and thoughts this past week.

I say with a very heavy heart that the rescuers found him, but unfortunately he did not make it. The area where he was lost was very rugged country. They found him about a mile and a half from his campsite where he had fallen down a ravine and passed away.

He was a great man that was loved by all and he had a special way of making everyone feel important. He also sincerely cared about each person he met. Overall, he was just a great person and truly exemplified what it means to be a great leader.  [Read more…] about Podcast Episode #61 — Four Ways You Influence Others

Please Help Me! I sincerely need your help!

Hi friends! Before we get into today’s episode, I want to ask you for a special personal favor. I have a cousin that is an avid outdoorsman, camper, and backpacker. Every year he and his family do an annual backpacking trip. They have been doing it for more than 25 years and always go to the same area. They understand the greatness of the mountains and the importance of emergency preparedness. This year was no different.

This past week they went on their annual trip. On Wednesday night, my cousin, Ray Humphreys went to get some water from the nearby Hidden Lake to put out their fire, but never came back. After a short time, the rest of the family realized he hadn’t come back and they began searching for him. After a bit, they couldn’t find him so they contacted search and rescue. They have been searching for him every day since Wednesday and he is still missing.

He is located in the Uintas Mountains near Kamas, UT. If you are in the area and want to join the search party, please let me know and I can put you in touch with the right people. You can email me at BrandonWJones@LeadershipDoneRight.com or send me a direct message on Facebook or Twitter. If joining the search party is not an option, Please keep Ray and the search party in your prayers. I will include a link to additional information on the show notes page. I am deeply grateful to you for your support and help on this!

Sneak Peek

Alright, in today’s episode, I am going to discuss how you can become a better listener by doing these five things that good listeners do. By implementing these techniques, you will become a better listener, improve your relationships with others, and overall just become happier as a result! In today’s episode, I will discuss how to become great leaders through small and simple means. We’ll discuss five actions you can take daily to become a great leader.

The Search for Gold

I want to start with a story from a speech I heard by M. Russell Ballard called Finding Joy through Loving Service. He said:

Oftentimes we are like the young merchant from Boston, who in 1849, as the story goes, was caught up in the fervor of the California gold rush. He sold all of his possessions to seek his fortune in the California rivers, which he was told were filled with gold nuggets so big that one could hardly carry them.

Discouragement Through Difficulties

Day after endless day, the young man dipped his pan into the river and came up empty. His only reward was a growing pile of rocks. Discouraged and broke, he was ready to quit until one day an old, experienced prospector said to him, “That’s quite a pile of rocks you are getting there, my boy.”

The young man replied, “There’s no gold here. I’m going back home.”

Walking over to the pile of rocks, the old prospector said, “Oh, there is gold all right. You just have to know where to find it.” He picked two rocks up in his hands and crashed them together. One of the rocks split open, revealing several flecks of gold sparkling in the sunlight.

Noticing a bulging leather pouch fastened to the prospector’s waist, the young man said, “I’m looking for nuggets like the ones in your pouch, not just tiny flecks.” [Read more…] about Podcast Episode #59 — Leadership Greatness by Small and Simple Actions
