Get to Know Mark

Hi friends, today we have a special guest. Our guest is a partner of Sherpa Technology Group, a firm that advises businesses on mergers and acquisitions and strategy. He previously worked as an investment banking analyst in New York.

Our guest has been quoted for his opinions on business and technology matters in Bloomberg, Businessweek, and elsewhere. He has authored internationally published business articles and participated in several Summit Series events. He also recently wrote the book An End to Upside Down Thinking.

Our guest has attended the annual TED Conference for the past 8 years. He graduated magna cum laude from Princeton University, where he was captain of the tennis team.

I am really excited to have our guest on the show today! Our guest today is Mark Gober. Mark, welcome to the show!

Learning to Effectively Delegate

In this episode, Mark Gober and I talked about his journey from a beginning leader to managing many people. Through that journey, Mark learned the importance of delegating.

Because there is just not enough time in the day to do it all, Mark learned to delegate important tasks to others. He started by bringing in people that were good to do important tasks. He and his leadership team felt it was important to allow them to use their skills and abilities to improve the organization. That required they give up some control, but ultimately it was best for him and their team.

By giving up control, he grew as a leader AND those he lead grew as people. There came a point where he had to delegate just to continue to move the organization forward. That was key to his effectiveness delegating.

The Speed Round

  1. Who is the one leader you look up to most and why? Dr. David Hawkins because he was a prominent psychiatrist. He had a number of great books. Dr. Hawkins was dedicated to expose people to reality. He worked very hard to make sure that what he conveyed was true and accurate. Mark learned the importance that leaders have in teaching other people.
  2. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? When we look at any achievement that we have, it is easy to think that WE did it! But, it is easy to forget that it was due to a person we met, a book we read, or news we heard. It is okay to have some pride in our achievements, but we should not have too much pride.
  3. What’s a personal habit that contributes to your success? Hard work. I always like to fully understand something before I dive right into it. I work very hard to make sure I understand topics I get into.
  4. If you could recommend one book to our listeners, what would it be and why?Letting Go by Dr. David Hawkins. In this book, he talks about different emotions and how we can learn to let them go. This is good for leaders because if we are in a difficult emotional place, it shows us how to overcome them so we can get to a well grounded place.
  5. On a light-hearted note, what is your favorite hobby? I love researching especially on the topic of consciousness. I love researching using YouTube, Podcasts, and other sources.

Hi friends! Today I have a great episode with one of my great friends. We go way back. Bert and I talked about several great topics. We discussed his transition from a supervisor to a manager, making tough leadership decisions, how to show employees that you appreciate them, the simplicity of leadership and a variety of other topics. I learned a lot through our discussion so I hope you enjoy it! So, without further ado, here is the interview!

Get to Know Bert

Bert Somsin

Today we have a very special guest. Our guest began his career at UPS in 2006 as a package handler in Reno, Nevada, but he was very driven to become a leader. Since then he has held positions as Human Resources Supervisor, Area HR Manager, District HR Operations Manager, and is now the UPS Information Technology HR Director.

His positions have taken him from Reno, NV to Oakland, CA and he now works in Mahwah, NJ.

Our guest has experience in all aspects of HR, including Workforce Planning, Employee Relations, Performance Management, Career Development, Succession Planning, Employee Services, Compensation and Benefits and Labor Relations.

He holds a bachelor’s in Business Management and a master’s in Business Administration, both from the University of Nevada-Reno.

I have been friends with our guest for several years. We took several classes together in the MBA program and graduated in 2011. Our guest today is Bert Somsin. Bert, welcome to the show!

Leadership from an Early Start

Bert first became a leader working with his mom at their family owned restaurant. He owned an operated a restaurant from age 18 to 23. That helped him understand what leadership was all about from a very early age.

One of the key lessons he learned was that people often don’t judge you first as a manager or leader. Rather, they judge you as a person. They look at who you are and your principles and character. Once people have judged you on that, they’ll give you the opportunity to be a manager and leader. It’s not the other way around.

Hi friends! There’s a lot of people that start out their careers with all the motivation in the world to become great leaders. They want to change the world and start out working hard to be great. For the first few years or even longer, they hit the ground running. As years begin to pass, the motivation starts to slip and all the dreams of success and changing the world fade.

The drive to make every day count fades. The new desire is to do what it takes to get through each day, but then leave as soon as they can to enjoy life. Their strong dedication gets replaced with a very common disease. Now this is a very serious disease.

I have seen great people get infected with this disease to where it completely derailed their career drive. In the worst cases, this disease can lead to the loss of jobs. If you are still wondering what this terrible disease is, I like to call it complacency.

In this episode, I am going to talk about three things that happen when complacency sets in and five tips to overcome complacency.

What Happens When Complacency Sets In?

Alright, let’s talk about what happens when complacency sets in. Several years ago, I had a great leader, Larry Spackman. He taught me a valuable lesson about complacency. He was very successful in everything he did and attributed his success to his strong drive and unrelenting desire to never back down when working to complete his goals.

When I was around him, he always stressed the importance of working hard and doing your very best. In addition, he lived what he taught. Because he was so driven, he despised complacency. He taught that complacency would keep you from reaching your dreams and goals. Larry taught me to avoid complacency at all cost and his example confirmed the validity of what taught.

There are three major side effects that come with a complacent attitude. [Read more…] about Podcast Episode 76 — How to Recognize and Avoid Complacency In Leadership!

Get to Know Jacob Baadsgaard

Hi friends! We have a special guest today. Our guest founded Disruptive Advertising in 2012 and has grown the company to over 120 employees and 17 million dollars in annual revenue in only 3.5 years. Disruptive Advertising helps businesses advertise profitably on Google and Facebook.

While most business leaders focus on personal financial gain, our guest reinvests a fair amount of his profits back into his employees and the community. He also develops employees with no experience into leadership roles within his company that earn six figure salaries.

He is a regular contributor on sites like Forbes, Entrepreneur, MarketingLand, Unbounce, KissMetrics as well as others.

Our guest today is Jacob Baadsgaard. Jacob, welcome to the show!

Jacob’s Why

While in the corporate world, Jacob realized that regardless of how much effort he gave his employer, he would not be compensated accordingly. He could put forth effort X and get paid X or he could put forth effort 10X and get paid X.1. There was a disconnect. His desire was to bridge that gap so there was more alignment.

Jacob also had a desire to lead and help others. He thrives on helping people work hard and then be compensated for their hard work. He decided to start his own business to help others and himself do just that. He attributes his success and the success of his organization to their ability to create an environment where people have a lot more influence and control of their direction and progression. Hi friends! Over the last little while, I have had several requests to talk about empathy in leadership and how one can develop it. So, in this episode I want to  talk about leadership empathy. We’re going to define what leadership empathy is, the difference between empathy and sympathy, and five steps you can take today to develop leadership empathy.

Take Advantage of This Free Coaching Opportunity!

Before we get to that, do you want to become a better leader? If you do, I can help you take your leadership to the next level!

I have some leadership coaching sessions available for a limited time just for you! In these coaching sessions, I’ll help you accelerate your career, leadership, and life so you can become the leader you are meant to be.

In these coaching sessions, we’ll discuss how you can improve yourself and your leadership. We’ll help you develop and complete challenging goals through proven goal setting strategies, and create and refine your personal development plan. In addition, I’ll guide you through leadership training to refine your communication, time management, teamwork and other leadership skills.

If you want to become a great leader today, send me a quick email at brandonwjones@leadershipdoneright.com, or message me on Facebook, LinkedIn, or twitter to let me know that you’d like to schedule your free coaching session today!

What is leadership empathy?

Let’s start with a few dictionary definitions of empathy:

  • The Google dictionary explains that it is “The ability to understand and share the feelings of another.”
  • Merriam-Webster says it is, “the action of understanding, being aware of, being sensitive to, and vicariously experiencing the feelings, thoughts, and experience of another of either the past or present without having the feelings, thoughts, and experience fully communicated in an objectively explicit manner.”
  • And finally, Wikipedia defines empathy as, “the capacity to understand or feel what another person is experiencing from within the other person’s frame of reference, meaning the capacity to place oneself in another’s position.”

There’s a lot to each of those definitions, but what I takeaway is that when you have empathy, you feel what others are feeling as if it is happening to you. You understand and relate to as if you were in their shoes. [Read more…] about Podcast Episode 74 — 5 Steps To Develop Leadership Empathy

Podcast Episode 72 — Tips to Get Back Up in the Face of Discouragement!

Hi Friends! In this episode, I am going to talk about how we all get knocked down, go through discouragement, and have setbacks. We can become better as we get up, learn from the setbacks, and try again to progress. By doing that, we get better and grow.

Travel Joys

Before we get into this, I want to share an interesting experience. This past week I traveled to Texas for a conference for my full-time employment. It was great! Great learning, great people, and a great place.

I had to fly to Texas and as normal, I have to go through airport security. When I fly places, I often take my audio equipment including my H4N audio recorder with me so I can keep up with the podcast. The H4N has two microphones on the top that point towards each other. If you are familiar with what an audio recorder looks like, it is obvious that it is an audio recorder.

I have flown with it several times. Each time I take it through the security checkpoint, I get mixed responses. When I put it in a bin for the scanner, the agents have questioned why I took it out. Then when I have left it in my bag, they’ve pulled my bag to check the audio recorder thinking it was a taser. Knowing that they often question why I take it out, I feel a little funny taking it out. But, it is a hassle having them go through my bag so I have just decided to take it out each time.

I know that is a random story, but I thought it was a little interesting and since it directly relates to the podcast I wanted to share it.

Get Back Up!

As I mentioned at the beginning, stumbling, falling down, and going through discouragement are all part of the growing process. Without setbacks, we can’t become the leader or person we want to become! Many of the greatest people you will ever find have experienced failure. There is no disgrace in falling down; the disgrace is lying there.

The Story of Babe Ruth

To explain this point, I want to share a story from the life of Babe Ruth, one of the greatest American baseball players. This story illustrates the principle of success and particularly failure.

The Game

It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon in the summer of 1927, and 35,000 wildly excited baseball fans packed Shibe Park. They were giving Babe Ruth the “razzberry”–and good! Lefty (Bob) Grove, one of the greatest left-handed pitchers of all time, had just struck out Babe Ruth on three consecutive pitched balls for the second successive time. Two runners were stranded on the bases.

As the great slugger returned to the bench, amidst wild and abusive jeering, he looked up into the stands with an unruffled smile, just as he did the first time, gave his cap a polite little tip from his perspiring brow, stepped down into the dugout, and calmly took a drink of water.

The Moment of Truth

In the eighth inning, when he came up for his third time at bat, the situation was critical. The Athletics were leading the Yankees, 3–1. The bases were loaded and there were two outs. As Babe selected his favorite bat and started toward the plate, the crowd rose in a body, as if by signal. The excitement was tremendous!

“Strike ‘im out again!” pleaded the fans to Grove. Strutting around the pitcher’s box, it was easy to see that the big southpaw believed he was just going to do that. [Read more…] about Podcast Episode 72 — Tips to Get Back Up in the Face of Discouragement!
